Finally a proper in-depth review of popular bodyboard fins! I have the original Makapuu's and regular 5" yellow dot Vipers. I agree, the Vipers are powerful but my legs get sore veryyy quickly. I also have Hydro Tech 2's which are very comfortable but don't have the power i need to paddle out during big wave days. After everything, I always go back to the Makapuu's! Thanks for the great content!

Thanks! Well appreciated! I think the problem is that bodyboarding is classed as low end sport (in comparison of surfing). But only few know how demanding this sport really is. So thank you again! and yes Makapuus are great, though lately, strangely, I have loved size bigger alder fins - referred to as the local surf shop fins in the video.

Great review. I still have 2 pairs of redley fins. Never found another fin like that. Hands down they’re my favorite out of everything I’ve used. My second go to are Toobs bluntcuts. I guess I’m an old school kinda guy lol.

I had the yellow ms vipers and eventually replaced them for the orange dot ones, everything you said is absolutely true, too stiff, even with socks they kill your feet, you get sore for days, amazing power but you get tired quickly, the orange dot is much more forgiving

I have the yellow dots and find I could go even stiffer. I find they squish my toes yet feel loose in the ankle.

the ms viper fins come in a softer compound that would be easier for you to use.

I am looking to replace my 38 yr old Makapuu fins, I love them but the rubber is finally rotting away (talk about durability!) How do the stealth fins fit? I have wide feet (and surf with booties in the winter) and the Makapuus are always a bit too snug on my forefoot. I'm hoping the stealths are a smidge wider. Any thoughts?

You probably need something softer. Sounds weird but.. if you do proper paddling - with your hips not knees, then you will get better results with softer fins, plus, start paddling sooner, and do extra strokes once on the wave. Try something like Alder fins .. these are very soft (but not as soft as da-fin), not too expensive and give a nice glide. Also .. it could just be that you are a bit too far out. Bodyboarders drop in later than surfers.

I'm looking for the ultimate DK fins that has the stiffest, narrowest, and shortest blade. I also prefer a foot pocket that's not too soft or stiff.

Hi ty for your video! Will the beginner fins catch a wave? Or are they just for beginners to practice swimming in? I live in Myrtle beach, small breaks on a regular basis! I've been boarding for a little over a year and thought it may be cool to try fins! Ty for any advice
@iRoxanneLady
@iRoxanneLady 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, tbh anything catches waves if you do it right. But if you are just starting out, getting used to fins, you will almost certainly still be in waist deep water. So what I would suggest is - stand up, wait until wave is close (you will figure out how far is far - the type of waves changes), jump towards the shore with your board and paddle like mad - the fins will give you extra boost. Not as much as proper bodyboard fins, but enough to figure out what is going on. To do this with big and wide fins has a few issues - they get stuck on sand and you may pull your hip, plus if the current is strong you will find the fins catch the current when you are standing making it difficult even to stand up. Resulting in full body exercise even before you try to catch a wave. So the smaller fins will help you understand how to control these forces, give you extra oomph and in a way actually help you catch waves better. Hope this answered your question. But if you need to know anything else, just ask :)

What about the fins for the winter when you need to use the boots, all are too tie and feel pain
@iRoxanneLady
@iRoxanneLady 5 жыл бұрын
I tend to use Makapuus in Summer and Stealth for winter. Makapuus are more snug fit and Stealth a bit wider. But for strange reason I started loving oversized Alder fins lately, because they're snug with and without socks lol. So it is matter of preference, but, to be sure use one kind/size for winter and the other for summer.

My DaFin pair, 2018 model, M-L size has a stiff blade, much more stiffer than the MS VIPERS yellow dot, although the foot pocket is the most comfortable and flexible i have tried. Blue/yellow classic Makapuu's are stiffer and give you more power, and the drainage hole is a trap for your toes when a heavy lip lands onto your fins, if your toes get trapped in the drainage hole, is one of the worsts pains ever.

I have MS VIPER's, in yellow dot and orange dot, i read somewhere an information given by Mike Stewart himself,talking about the soft/stiff blade, and he recomended the orange/soft blade for kids. I used yellow dots for bodyboarding and bodysurfing until they cracked after one year of use(don't stand on them, the union between the drainage hole can break), i tried the orange dot's, and since then, they are my perfect bodysurfing fins(despite the fact that the foot pocket is very uncomfortable, the end is very narrow, they give a lot of pressure, and the "orientation", the angle of the foot pocket in relation with the blade is non ergonomic at all, but they are a wave catching machine, and once bodysurfing the wave, the control, speed and possibillity to give an extra kick even bodysurfing fast(in order to pass a section) makes them the ideal bodysurfing fins) and they don't give little ulcers at the end of my 2nd and 3rd toe, and they don't give me cramps, like the yellow's do. They have less power than the yellow's, but the "comfortness" and quality time spent in the water is something to take in consideration. Although they have less power, in order to bodyboarding, they are just perfect for bodysurfing. When my second pair of Churchill's got broken, i went straight to buy DELTA VIPER's first generation, and i have now the best bodyboarding fins ever, if i'm in good form(if not, i can't use them, you need strong legs in order to get that power!).
@iRoxanneLady
@iRoxanneLady 5 жыл бұрын
oh wow nice, i didn't know there are two types of vipers out there. But yes, they are .. very uncomfortable in my opinion, though at the same time, very very good fins. As for Delta, I have yet to try them. When I got mine years ago, the vipers weren't for sale in UK region for some strange reason, despite looking everywhere. So, something to try. Re comfort I also agree with you there. A little less power is not so much of a deal if you gain a lot of comfort in return. Plus one thing I also must say, that the stiffer the fin the harder it is to lift it out of the water/wave, and the harder fins also act like a current trap. Which makes bodyboarding in more complicated situations - multiple currents and wave combinations - way more exhausting than a soft fin. So eventually it all comes down to what you prefer on the day you go surfing.
@ganjalfelverde1910
@ganjalfelverde1910 5 жыл бұрын
I did understand you, but one thing i don't understand:Why do you lift out of the water your fins? Dou you mean that you kick that way? If it's the case, that's one big mistake! I've noticed that in kids and beginners, and i always tell them, keep your fins in the water, never kick in surface, otherwise your energy doesn't translates in proper propulsion in the water, it would be wasted in the air, resulting in a waste of energy and not catching the wave and frustration. For me, the perfect kick, is like paddling with a surfboard, you begin in a gentle way when you see the wave approaching(2 or 3 kicks), and when you begin to feel uplifted by the wave, give 2 or 3 kicks with all of your energy liberating a burst of power. My trick is not to use my fins in the paddle out, i just use my arms, paddling in a relax way, not forcing my elbows, always gentle, and only giving a pair of kicks before duck diving. That way you will work your arms, and you will save your legs for duck dives, and for the main reason, to catch the wave. Positioning well in the line up and to be right in the peak also helps a lot. If you are in the right spot, sometimes the wave"catches"you with a little effort, but if in that same wave, you are in the shoulder kicking like hell, you may not catch the wave, and instead of that, you can "catch" cramps.
@iRoxanneLady
@iRoxanneLady 5 жыл бұрын
Yes some people kick that way, but no, often times the waves are very slow and soft. In order to get any tricks done you need to get out of the wave. But if the wave isn't strong enought, you won't get that much speed and then you need to physically lift your fins out of water. It is about getting every wave you set your mind into. Otherwise as you say it is just a wave and energy wasted followed by a cramp XD
