After 20,000 nautical miles our sails are coming to the end of their lives. It's not that they have holes or tears in them. However they stretch with time, and poor sail shape reduces performance and makes the boat heel more.
While we are laid up for winter it is time to order a new suite, however it's not an easy choice!
We need a good and close relationship with our sailmaker. We want to be able to talk to them regarding all our requirements. They need to understand our sailing, what we propose to do and be there to manage delivery anywhere in the world.
We finally chose Precision Sails, based in Canada.
Why?
Firstly they are very hands on. They have helped at every stage of the process, from deciding on sails to choosing a material that suits our sailing. They are competitively priced, can deliver anywhere in the world and guarantee that if for some unlikely reason the sail doesn't fit properly, they will make you a new sail, not just recut a faulty one.
So today we need to measure, then measure again, and finally measure again. Precision sails have sent us a comprehensive list of measurements to take to ensure a prefect fit at any point of sail.
*EXCLUSIVE BLACK FRIDAY OFFER*
Precision Sails are giving up to 40 % off new sails for a limited time only. Link below:

I respect your choices and your research is better than mine. Knowing that I needed a new mainsail, I sent a request for a quote on a new set of sails for my boat. A little over an hour they had a quote for my particular boat. Very detailed like you said. Am going to make an appointment to talk as I really need a mainsail. A couple that goes by "Learning the Lines" on KZbin, are also buying their sails from them. Your tech videos are spot on, keep them up.

Precision Sails is a fantastic company. I didn't know anything about sailing when I picked up my project boat (C&C 30 with no main). Ron took me under his wing, gave me great advice, walked me through the forms, and built me a sail with no issues whatsoever. I can't say enough good about them.

Hi N&T, Good video!!! I went with a Cruising laminate 135 Genoa and a Dacron Main ( high density weave) from Island Planet sails in California. I was and am really happy with them. You are absolutely right about the laminates holding their shape!!! And we did push it hard!!! Anyway after 20000 miles the laminate started to delaminate. They cannot be repaired unlike Dacron. We were mid Atlantic and had to roll the sail in to cover the delamination.. slowed us significantly. Today we have 3 Genoa’s a Carbon Fiber laminate 135 % old North Penlam 145% and an old Dacron I picked up used. Now when we go long this old sail is stowed on board as a back up in case we run into problems with our Laminates. Back ups on back ups😏. Real appreciate your efforts and talents!!! If you ever get to Denmark we will host you in the Danish South Seas... no Budweiser we have some great micro brews. We would love to swap stories. Fair winds Mike and Crew Storm Svale Swan 40 by S&S

It looks so imprecise, but interesting 😳🤪 On My racing Catamaran, we knew the luff ( bolt rope ) foot and leech lengths. 1 inch of mast pre bend sewn into the luff . All had accurate known lengths. Even the rig had specific lengths. You knew when it needed changing. Compare sail and rig measurements to the master measurements. Couldn’t Southerly Yachts give you your leech, luff , foot and mast pre bend measurements ? what a new sail size should be?

Hi Nick, All that follows is my opinion. We just put a set of North Sails on our 38’ sloop and the sails are great them selves. However I would NEVER use NS again. Horrible delivery time. 14 weeks. Ordered in October and delivered in January. Really? They mis-cut the Genoa (wanted high cut) and they delivered full cut. Almost cut my jib halyard off from chaffing. Then they didn’t’ put foot slides on the main sail like my boom requires. NS did fix this promptly however. The salesman didn’t ask me anything about options. He just put together a sail plan and said it will be an amazing amount of money due. We gladly paid it expecting we would get world class service from a prominent sailmaker . NOT I feel as a first time buyer of a set of sails we were taken total advantage of. No questions, not given any options and we were certainly not “schooled” in how and why we should pick a particular sail. I believe you and Theresa have made a sound decision going with Precision. @edrussell7960
@edrussell7960 5 жыл бұрын
Not an expert here, but the stretch a sail gets is in the body of the sail(the center gets baggy and stretched.) There are lines in the edge of the sail that are made not to stretch much. So the sail gets stretched like a overstuffed trash bag in the center but the edges stay the same. Hope this helps. Peace.✌

I just paid 6,000 usd for a new high quality custom made jib a mainsail and mainsail cover. For a 37 foot cruising boat . My last sails lasted 13 years. I paid 4,000 for those . Yes they were out of shape in the end but were very high quality to start with. I could have paid half this price from a company called lee sails in asia lots of people do they are good basic cruising sails. For half the price. Mail ordered from asia but i wanted to get best quality sails possible I am a lazy sailor so could have just paid 3,000 usd and kept cruising. You just do as was done here. Measure and you send that off and a fewc weeks later a new sail arrives. And you hope you measured right. My sail maker came to the boat and measured and fiddled around so it was on him if not right.

Hi Nick , looks a good option and price is good to , they are calling me later .i has a cross cut in Dacron with Vectron last year to strengthen the Genoa and give longer life but tempted by the radial as it’s uv protected and should stop delamination . Is there a shipping charge on the quote and do you know what HM customs will charge for import to the UK , thank D
@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 5 жыл бұрын
You have to pay vat on the quote. So HMRC get their slice. However they still worked out at half the price of another big name. We have heard really good things about them from our friends and they guarantee a new sail if it doesn’t fit right. Have a chat to them about materials. We looked at radials and then found that with their sale prices the laminate sails weren’t significantly more than Dacron. We picked up a full laminate main and jib for under $10,000 USD. I couldn’t get a Dacron set for that from one of the bigger lofts

Sails are deteriorating not by mile, but by: sun exposure (uv), salts (crystals tearing the fibers), friction (bad trim/sails flapping, bad handling, rough weather). Constantly under tension (streches/remove if not in use) - does not help too... For this reason, I believe, sailing hours or miles covered are bad metrics...
@garysouza2277
@garysouza2277 5 жыл бұрын
Everything you say (sun exposure, salts, friction and tension) are caused by usage, and usage is measured by sailing hours or miles, so I don't get how you validate your statement. Seems totally correct to me. If you were to sit at a dock and never use or put up your sails, they'd last forever. Just sayin...
@arturasnx7575
@arturasnx7575 5 жыл бұрын
Average day sailer, who knows how and cares for his sails, will have multiple times more millage compared to the one who does sea and ocean crossings and unawoidably hits tougher weather. And also we have jerks who manage to furl sails with uv protection strip in wrong side, mainsail left uncovered, incorrectly folded and or compressed sails - you name it. They can literally ruin the sails without a single mile...
@garysouza2277
@garysouza2277 5 жыл бұрын
@@arturasnx7575 The percentage of people who abuse their sails as you describe is quite small. On my dock alone there is only one boat with his main exposed and no sail cover. Ruby Rose is not that one guy. Their sails have been used for thousands of miles, exposed to the elements and therefor suffer from the damages you stated earlier(sun exposure, salt, friction and tension) Using your logic, if you roll up a sail, put it in a bag and keep it indoors, it'll last forever. True. But that's not what they're made for and that makes no sense. The wear comes from using the sail for it's intended purpose and that is sailing. Tires don't last forever if you drive...
