Avocados naturally fall from the tree unripe, so there aren't any benefits to buying them ripe. Buying them bright green and rock solid will ensure they haven't been bruised in the store or before. Wait 2-3 days until they feel dense, but not hard when pressed and their color has changed to a much darker green (like in this video.) If you aren't using them that day put them into the fridge where they will keep for 2-3 more days. (Don't let them ripen in the fridge. They will become mealy and tasteless and develop strings.) Sometimes my avocados ripen a day apart from one another, and if I want to use them together I keep the first ripe in the fridge and make the guacamole when the last one has ripened. Planning ahead and using this method, there is no such thing as a 'best' avocado, they will all be perfect.

Intriguing. Whenever choosing a bottle of Chartreuse, I try to find one that still has the bottle cap on. When I twist it off, if what I see is avocado colored, I can be fairly sure that it'll pair nicely with some guacamole... or pretty much anything else!
