The way I'd go about it: - Do you like the idea of receiving feedback when pressing keys? -> Blue or brown. - Do you like the idea of receiving feedback, but also like the sound of clicky switches? -> Blue. - Are you concerned the clicky noise will annoy you or other people, but you still want some feedback? -> Brown. - Do you not care about feedback and just want a fast actuation? -> Red. Based on that, you can continue looking at the variants of each type. Depending on what brand you choose and whether you go pre-built or custom, your switch options might be more limited. Which in of itself doesn't have to be a bad thing. It can make it easier for you! As Betty suggested, at some point, you have to pull the trigger and give it a go - even if you can't try out everything you're interested in. Only by trying will you know how you feel about it. Just be ready to return it in case you don't.

I've necer tried a linear switch, so IDEFK if I truly like tactile or linear more. Recently, I've noticed in general that I get annoyed with unnecessary and unpleasent sound. It's why I'm aiming to spend so much on my car's sound system, AND why I bought edifier bookshelf speakers for my PC. I hate distortion, hiss, screech, all that. So maybe I'll like linears more? Then again, I feel like the tactility helps you not bottom out the switch, which is more pleasurable I guess than always stabbing the fricken bottom, IDK. Heard anecdotally that it's better for your fingers, too. Being able to stealth mode and not annoy other people would probably be a plus. But also, there just has to be times where you MOG them and assert dominance, lmao. Maybe thick clicks with removable clickers? Who knows. In any case, the next keyboard I want has an 89 key layout and is a cheapo option that comes with clone reds (probably crappy ones, but still) so I guess I'm about to find out.

I have the same Keyboard with MX Red and MX Blue. The Red I use at work (just to not annoy my colleagues so much) and the Blue at home. I use them almost only for typing / programming and I have to say I prefer the MX Blues over the Red. The MX Red feels a little mushy for me. The Clicky sound of the Blues somehow lets my mind calm down while typing and I also like the tactile feedback. I was considering to buy a more expensive Keyboard (Ducky One 2 TKL, as it is also available in ISO German Layout) and thought about trying Brown Switches, so I got a Switch Tester beforehand (luckily)... And I have to say I just hate the MX Browns. From my point of view they are not tactile at all. They just feel scratchy at best, and while typing at normal Speed, one can‘t feel the bump at all. So I still haven‘t decided which switch to go for. Still can‘t decide between the MX Blue, MX Black and MX Silver.

tip for everyone else: the best switch for gaming is probably the creamsicles, these switches are made from the stem of a novelkeys creams and the housing of the c3 tangarines, the reason these might be the best for gaming is because the stem for the novelkeys creams is longer than the c3 tangarines so the housing for the c3 tangarines is made for a shorter switch pole so when you put a longer switch ole inside it significantly reduces the actuation distance, and they sound nicer

When I'm using a brown switch if I press the key slowly I can feel the tactile bump, but in normal typing I'm going fast enough to where I don't really notice the bump. With blue switches I can feel the bump better when typing normally, plus there's also the click feedback to help you know you've actuated the key.
@Durwood712 жыл бұрын
I've been using tactile mechanical switches of one kind or another for nearly two decades, so I stopped consciously noticing the bump a long time ago, but if I ever happen to use a keyboard with linear switches, I definitely notice the absence of the bump. It just doesn't feel right, and I find it harder to type without bottoming out the keys.

The best tactile switches there are the legndary Model F. Maybe you heard about the IBM Model M. The Model F was before that legend and they "cheaped out" on the later produced Model M. The Model M uses a membrane that gets switched, the Model F capacitence. The original keyboards a quite old and most models need some magic to work on a modern PC. Luckily there is a new interpretation of that keyboard. Sadly it is a bit costly, but they are using capacitive buckling springs. The case is made out of metal and the full keyboard weights around 3kg. Those 400$ sound like much, but the old ones from IBM cost the same and if you calculate inflation in, you are more around 900$ in todays money.

As I'm doing my first build (well two, one for me and my partner) this has got to be the most complicated part as everyone has a different preference. Even with us two, I prefer something more muted where she prefers something with a good click. I think I'm way more interested in a nice dull sound and tactile feel, where she just wants a solid click (so probably blues) This has been the most helpful guide to understanding the differences, thank you so much for this! I think the best way has to be to just try them out in person since what someone likes is so subjective, so I'll use this as a reference to narrow down a few switches for us to try! Thanks again, keep up the great content!

I totally agree, at first, you actually have to find out which type you like the most and I really recommend here to buy or lend 3 (cheap) keyboards, one linear, one tactile and one clicky. And regularly switch between them during your usual tasks for at least a week (I bought 3 used Cherry MX-Boards 3.0 and sold them afterwards for the same price - cleaning them was mandatory thought). When you know your general direction, find out if you want more or less actuation force, travel distance, sound etc. Now research which switch can offer you your needs and buy a keyboard that not only offers you your favorite switches but also fulfills your other needs (I personally think the type of palm rest is a huge decision but preferences differ), maybe even consider a custom build. My personal favorites are Razer Purple Switches for clicky, MX Brown for tactile and I hate all kinds of linear switches. Preferences differ.

How to buy a switch: 1. Find a switch. 2. Watch a typing test of it. 3. Buy it, or repeat. You have now bought a switch!

I went from 3 prebuilt boards (red, then blue, then brown. All TKLs) to a ducky 65% with browns to a KBD 75% which lubed durock t1's and so far it is my favorite thing. I think it's really hard to decide what to go with and the only way to figure out what you'll like is to try stuff. Hotswap boards are good for this, but also if you just use a board for a few weeks you can usually tell if you like it or not after that much time and can then decide what to try next. Great vid overall, I imagine it must be hard to make vids on such a subjective matter as people love their opinions!

If you plan on using your keyboard only for typing, I would also suggest trying buckling spring keyboards (Model Ms). I went from a Blackwidow Chroma to one of Unicomp' New Model M and the razer green switches feels like a toy in comparison to the buckling spring meca-membrane keys of the Model M.

as a first timer to this space, I took a lot of time narrowing down what I want my first build to consist of ...with some minor compromises (keycap sets being pretty pricey) *slaps razer upgrade keycaps onto table*. I settled for either Boba silent tactile or Glorious Panda switches (or I could get both and make glorious boba's if I wasn't pinching a few penny's). the issue more for me is settling on a body. I settled for the NK65 aluminum base at first ..but then the GMMK Pro dropped and it had that RGB nice accent on the sides and included the rotary knob ...kinda makes me wish Glorious made a 65% with the same aesthetic in mind ...I'd jump on a 65 with a rotary knob instantly if they did

Nice seeing techne has khail speed silvers as one of his top 4 because that's what comes standard in my hotswap keyboard that's on the way. But I just love the sound of louder clicks, and you mentioned the khail bronze in your evga review so I ordered those to switch out. Hopefully I dont notice too much of losing speed for when I'm gaming. Great tips.

My way on how to chose the best switch… 1. Look up: what is the fastest switch 2. Buy the switch. 3. Realize that there is a keyboard already with that switch 4. Get that keyboard then forget the switches

I love the clicky feeling of a mechanical keyboard so my first was the Logitech g710+ with cherry mx blue. Loved typing on that thing. Got a brown mx version for work. Then I went with cherry red for gaming (corsair k55). Upgraded that to a premium mech kb with media controls and volume wheel (razer blackwidow elite w/ razer orange switch). Got a TKL (hyperx origins core, aqua switch) for portability. Latest KB is evga z15 (kailh speed brown) to try swappable switches and to go back to clicky. Nice thing is it has 8 extra linear switches. I plan to swap 4 into WASD for less noise on most used keys while keeping that satisfying click on the rest. If I don't like it, I can always get different switches. So, what did I learn after all this? Variety is the spice of life. One is never enough 😁
