We're so glad to hear that you were able to solve your drainage problem! As for your driveway, a 12” x 12” catch basin is one possible solution to this problem. The drawback to using a catch basin is that the surface needs to be graded such that the water is directed to the catch basin. A channel drain is a long drain that is installed across the driveway to capture anything that flows towards the drain. It will collect water over a larger area and would be the better solution.

Very informative. The Flo-well looks like an easier way to do an old-fashioned "dry well" to percolate water into the soil. I will try one of these on my new house. I have never noticed a pop-up emitter around here(SF Bay Area). It seems to be a good idea that helps conserve water, which is a big deal around here. It also keeps pollutants out of the streams. I will try one of these, too.

my lawn is lower than the street hence the pooling, how is the catch basin going to drain uphill without a pump?
@Ndspro11 жыл бұрын
Hi James! To answer your question, yes our Flo-Well can be used as a cistern. Placing a heavy mil plastic sheet inside of the Flo-Well will create a water tight area that can catch and store runoff water. When using the Flo-Well to store water, it is recommended that you also get the Flo-Well bottom for additional support.Hope that's helpful!

Hi Joe, thanks for your question! In the winter time, the surface would freeze. This would prevent water from draining to the surface. The Pop-up emitter should be installed on an elbow that has a weep hole. The weep hole will allow water in the pipe to drain. This will solve the problem with the emitter being frozen. The elbow should be installed below the frost depth. A section of pipe can be connected to the elbow to bring the Pop-up to the surface. Hope this helps.

The EZ-Drain has a layer of fabric, but in high clay/slit soils, it is a good idea to line the trench with an additional layer of fabric. NDS does offer fabric for sale. You will want to use a permeable soil for the backfill. This can be a new soil brought in, or they can use the existing soil as long as you amend it with sand or gravel. To do this, you need to mix sand or gravel in with the clay and then use that as backfill.

Hi NDS, I have a split level in CT on a fairly level lot. We have compacted silt soil (mostly clay). The downspout drainage system is currently clay tiles that run into dry wells. Some of the dry wells have collapsed, and some of the drain tiles have collapsed, so the drainage system is in need of repair. There is no french drain around the house. There has been some water damage to the slab floor on the two story side of the house because of poor drainage by this side of the home. Over the years, water has made its way under the slab, frozen, and warped the concrete floor. The the water needs to get diverted away from this side of the house, and while I'm looking to do that, I think it would be a good time to update all of the drainage around the house. Just from my explanation, what type of drainage system would you lean towards? Downspout drains, or a french drain? I've heard that dry wells are not great solutions for the compacted silt/clay soil type that we have here. I'm also not sure that dry wells would be able to handle all of the runoff with the soil type in our area. Would I have to tie my storm drainage into the public storm drains on the street, costing big bucks? Thanks, Kevin

There are several ways to drain water from the catch basin. A variety of pipe types and sizes can be connected to the outlets on the catch basins. Water that enters the catch basin is then carried away in the drain pipe. If the drain pipe is perforated, then the water will percolate into the ground along the length of the pipe. Holes can also be drilled into the bottom of the catch basin to allow water to slowly percolate into the ground beneath the basin. Hope that helps!

Nobody mentions the Northern locations in regards to the pop-ups. You run it down to 'almost' the sidewalk. Then, either a rain or snow-melt event gets followed by a drop in temps. What then follows is an ambulance and the always-present Lawyer! Also, after a decent snowfall, wouldn't the weight of the snow prevent the pop-up from popping-up?

If anyone can answer, please do! We are buying a house in Poconos PA. The house sits on a hill and all water runs down towards the driveway and then creates a pretty big mosquito pond. The house is located in a gated community. The roads are not paved. The question is: where do we redirect all the water to? There are no sewers. We do have a lake across the street from our house, there is a road (unpaved) and a green belt in between. Looking for advice! Thank you kind people!! ;)

Our house seems to sit in the lowest part of the neighborhood and as such, our yard always floods in a rainstorm. Also, none of the houses in the neighborhood (older Craftsman homes) have gutters and the homes are pretty close together, so there is a lot of water that comes off of our home and our two neighbor homes. Would you be able to recommend a total solution? We have used your Dry wells at other of our homes and they work great!

That depends on the situation. You will need someone to come out and tell you what you need. I recommend watching Gate City Foundation Drainage KZbin channel to watch how they personalize each job for the water issues that people have. They’ve been a great source of information for me. What is the maxium depth from pop up emitter to elbow? How deep can this be? I live in northern ontario so have to take winter into consideration.. Thx
@Ndspro6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe! The depth of the elbow would depend on the slope of the pipe leading into it. It is important that the pop up is lower than where the water is entering the system. So if you can ensure that the pop is lower, then the elbow can be buried at any depth. Where exactly does the water drain to through the pipe in the catch drain system? Does it disperse under ground?
@jrb95598 жыл бұрын
Videos can look easy and simple. My attempt to install drainage solution turned into anything but easy and simple. Builder made the driveway angle toward a bank and house lower than street. Rain creates a small lake; takes days to drain/dry. Looked simple to install a catch box and route the drain under the driveway. Cut across, dug the trench, but quickly realized that in order for the line to drain, it had to be deeper than the 12" catch box, a lot deeper. Kept testing and when water would finally run through the pipe the line was 14" deep and at the neighbor's property. So, a popup drain would not work. How is one to know? These EZ videos assume you have a large property and the angle of your property is always perfect. If you can afford it, get professional help.
@Ndspro11 жыл бұрын
Yes you can and this is called a dry well. The only problem with a traditional dry well is that you only have up to 40% of the available storage because the gravel is taking up most of the space. The Flo-Well creates an open space in the ground that can hold 50 gallons. The Flo-Well is 2’ round by 2’ tall. To get the same 50 gallons in a gravel dry well, the hole would have to be 2’ round by 5.32’ deep. While both solutions work, we find the Flo-Well to be more efiicient.

It is possible for a lawn mower to damage a pop up emitter. To prevent this from happening we recommend either raising the mower when working around the emitter, or avoid the area altogether by using other means, such as a weed eater, to trim the grass around the product. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach out to our technical services department TechService@ndspro.com Thanks!

In order for a channel drain to be effective, the runoff water needs to drain towards the drain. If your driveway slopes towards the center, then the channel can be installed there to catch runoff water. Hope this was helpful.

It is always a good idea to install a Pop-Up Emitter, even if you have a Flo-Well or a traditional dry well system. The Pop-Up Emitter will provide a place for the water to go that is not absorbed into the ground. This can happen if the water entering the Flo-Well is greater than the storage capacity of the Flo-Well.

No question is a dumb question! The answer is, yes you can absolutely use a pop up emitter with a perforated pipe. A pop-up emitter should be installed at the end of every drainage installation. This allows a place for any excess water to go.

I noticed in the video that PVC pipe is used instead of corrugated pipe. Currently, I have corrugated pipe installed underground in my backyard that is connected to one downspout and I would like to connect my sump pump drain to the downspout drain. Is it okay to do that? Also, if PVC pipe is used and connected to the flow well, should the PVC pipe have holes in the bottom leading to the flow well?
@Ndspro6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff! Thanks for reaching out. It is ok to use corrugated pipe, but because it has the ridges or corrugations, it tends to catch debris more often. So, to help with this, we recommend sloping the corrugated pipe at least 2% or ¼” of fall for every 1’ of run. You do not need to have holes in the pipe that connects to the Flo well. These would be used if the line was also being utilized as a leach line where the water would travel to the Flo Well but also percolate into the ground below. If you have anyu firther quesitons please don't hesitate to reach out to our techinical services department TechnicalServices@ndspro.com

I live on a hill and when it rains it seems to wssh away the seeds I put down for grass in the patches I have that have been created by the rain how can I redirect the water to the streets
@Ndspro10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out. What you have is an erosion control problem. To prevent the soil/grass seed from being washed away suggest you do the following: 1. Create a grass swale and at the low spot of the swale install a catch basin with a grate. Connect a sewer or drain pipe to the catch basin and pipe it to the street. 2. You may also create a French Drain on the high side of the hill and backfill it with ¾” stone, the French Drain should be connected to a discharge pipe that will drain the water out to the street. The stone will prevent erosion and the pipe in the French Drain will drain the water out to the street. Hope that helps! The only thing you need to be aware of is the size of the gravel that you are placing on the existing concrete walkway. Any storm water grates, catch basins, or channel drains that are currently collecting water from the concrete walkway will also be covered in gravel. You may need put some sort of screen on the grates so that the gravel does not fall through the slots and fill these collection points with gravel.

Why not just install a filter or gutter guard on your roof rather than adding a catch basin? Assuming you keep vegetation away from the roof you should only need to brush away any build up in roof filters once a year at most. Removing vegetation from the roof area also improves fire safety.
