Holes can be drilled into the drain pipe to allow runoff to percolate into the ground along the pipe. This should be done only in cases where the drain pipe is at least 10' away from any structure.

This depends on 2 factors. How big of an area is draining to the catch basin and what surface is the water running off of? With this and knowing that the 100-year rainfall in Houston is approximately 4.5” / hour, we can determine your runoff and what catch basin you will need. If we use the plastic grate for all catch basins, the 9” can drain 114 gallons per minute, the 12” can drain 155 gallons per minute, the 18” can drain 264 gallons per minute, and the 24” can drain 708 gallons per minute.

NDS Stormwater Management so y’all design the systems based on a 100 yr 24 hr rainfall? Wouldn’t a 10 yr 24 hr or even a 50 yr 24 hr design storm be good enough? Also, when y’all are designing do y’all measure out all the impervious and previous areas to determine an accurate estimate of the surface runoff?

you forgot the critical step of putting landscaping fabric down in the trench BEFORE the gravel. leaving enough to wrap around the entire gravel bed on top. This will keep the gravel clean for a very long time. Then cover everything up with dirt and gr ass.

How many estimated catch basins 6-24" are being used in a city like Houston?

Houston floods every time it rains it seems like because they built on top of and poured concrete on what used to be prairie, wetlands, and farm land. The water has no place to go now and Houston keeps expanding and getting bigger.

I am buying two 12"x12 " catch basins tomorrow and was wondering if I can hook them up to 4" scedule 40 pvc. Do I need any special adaptor or a special method to connect? Thank you!

Good video. I think you guys should endorse the use of concrete over connections in this video. In my own installations I have found concrete to be a more realistic protector of connections against root entry rather than duct tape. Lately I've been pouring a 4" concrete collar around all connections to the basins.

So the holes which were drilled on the bottom of the catch basin gets rid of the sump/sediment that accumulates down the bottom or would you have to clean them out yourself?

enkrypt3d no. I wouldn’t drill holes or put gravel in them. Just take the inlet cover off every now and then and clean it out. Gravel should be placed below the catch basin, though. Doing that would add stability and prevent settlement.

@@TigerBand21 well the issue is that water will always be in the bottom of these things... perfect place for mosquitoes to breed...

enkrypt3d, I work as a water resources engineer, so I just designed my drainage system the same as I design those for neighborhoods. Seems to work fine..probably over the top, though. The part of the US I’m in the soil is all clay, which has a very low infiltration rate. So even if I drilled holes in the bottom of the catch basin to drain them the water would still back up as if I never did drill the holes. Also, the water in mine evaporates in a couple of days anyway, so it’s not a big to me. Your situation could be different..idk. Technically there’s nothing wrong with drilling holes in the bottom of the catch basin..there are just several parameters that play a role in all of it in my book.
