I just bought a used Pacific Fitness Zuma multi-station home gym. The pulleys look like a two part unit where the inner bushing separates from the plastic pulley wheel. Is your can of Blaster silicone "lubricant" actually a grease or is it an oil? I don't think an oil is thick enough to stick and adhere for long to such a pulley system. I'm thinking a more semi-solid silicone grease like automotive (ball joint) grease would have the required thickness. I see that Super Lube has an O-ring silicone grease that may be more what I'm need. I just noticed on another website that specializes in home gym repair that they recommend a Valvoline fully synthetic moly fortified automotive grease. Would being fully synthetic prevent it from harming any plastics in a home gym like the cable covering and pulley wheels?

"The pulleys look like a two part unit where the inner bushing separates from the plastic pulley wheel" They should not, these inner bushings should be pressed into the pulley, if they are net they are worn out. "Is your can of Blaster silicone "lubricant" actually a grease or is it an oil?" Blaster silicone is an oil, you are correct, and pulley bushings/bearings should always be a light oil lubricant as grease can cause too much drag and allow cables to slack or jump the pulley. "I don't think an oil is thick enough to stick and adhere for long to such a pulley system. I'm thinking a more semi-solid silicone grease like automotive (ball joint) grease would have the required thickness." Again, a semi solid grease is too thick for this type of application it will drag and over time cause wore undue wear on the cables. - Kevin

@@ProsourceFitnessEquipment - YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF, Kevin. I had just taken a quick look at the pulley and saw that the bearing extends out on both sides of the pulley. For some reason, I thought the bearing and pulley were two separate units. They're not. The bearing is locked into the pulley wheel. It does look as though on one side of the pulley wheel that there is a thin cover over the bearing. I gently probed with a knife blade but couldn't get under it to lift it off and I didn't want to gouge up my new toy. I would have liked to have seen what kind of bearing was under there and maybe be able to clean it out and lubricate it better. But, the bearing revolves like new with no wobble or catches so I will take your advice and just use that Blaster oil to help clean out the bearing and lubricate it for my use. Thanks you so much for your quick replay and wealth of knowledge. EDIT - I just looked up about Blaster and noticed it was a petroleum based lubricant. Isn't that bad for around plastic pulley wheels and the plastic coating on the cables? Should the Blaster Silicone lubricant be used instead? TriFlow is also a petroleum based lubricant.

What type of lubricant/grease would you recommend for pulley cables?
@ProsourceFitnessEquipment4 жыл бұрын
Pulleys have sealed bearings and require no lubrication, Cable also require no lubrication. However the guide rods that the weight slide up and down on should be cleaned and lubricated with 100 percent silicone lubricant.
@MisterBREW2 жыл бұрын
I use silicone spray on pulleys to lube the cables only on machines that experience unwanted twisting. Silicone will make the table slide smooth and wont let it twist. Only using it on lower end machines.

Hi Maribel. Great question! They should be lubricated with a silicone based lubricant such as Blaster Silicone Lubricant. www.walmart.com/ip/BLASTER-16-SL-Silicone-Lubricant-Aerosol-Can-11-Oz/19294875?wmlspartner=wmtlabs&adid=22222222222016758866&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=e&wl1=o&wl2=c&wl3=10374353370&wl4=pla-1105768326762&wl12=19294875_10000001195&wl14=pb%20blaster%20silicone%20lube&veh=sem&msclkid=5e1a6378df3110c2ffd43df4a801fde0 However in your case, if the guide rods are rusting you will need to clean all of the rust off first. The only way to do that is with a fine steel wool. Hope this is helpful!

How about when assembling a home gym? I have a Weider home gym with pulley sytem, and when assembling it there are some bolts and bushings that say to grease. Primarily for the leg attachment and chest piece used for doing chest flys. The grease that came with it isn't good. Should I use silicone lubricant on those? Or would marine grease be better?
@ProsourceFitnessEquipment4 жыл бұрын
You are spot on! When lubricating a bolt or bushing you should use the marine grease as it will stay in place and help keep dirt and moisture from entering the pivot joint.

What's better silicone spray or grease for strength machine Cables
@justdoit19854 жыл бұрын
Hello, I just bought a titan pulley machine. I have seen some videos where people have took apart the bearings and sprayed wd-40 or some lubricant on it. Would you say that’s a good idea or over time it will ruin it?
@accentcorporatemedia96824 жыл бұрын
Hi Roslin , I recommend never taking apart the bearings as they are sealed bearing design that is pre-lubricated. Spraying any type of lubricant in them will shorten their life. And please never spray WD-40 as a lubricant it is actually a water displacement cleaner and will destroy the bearings very quickly.

I'm sure there are better reasons not to use WD40, one being the smell and another one being that it might damage the belt,but it does lubricate rather well and it certainly doesn't dry up within moments.

WD-40 is a lubricant. The myth that it isn't a lubricant got started somewhere and just won't die. I've been using it for decades on my bicycle chains and it performs very well. My current bike chain is 4 years old and has at least 5,000 miles on it and is still performing well. And it has never seen any lubricant except WD-40. Here is a direct quote from WD-40's website: "While the 'W-D' in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product's formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal." Whether or not it's appropriate for use on gym equipment, I couldn't say. But it definitely IS a lubricant.
