I'm curious about spec'ing out a w990. 605 cummins, 2050 tourque, 22.5 tall rubber, 18 speed manual, with 2.93 gear ratio. My calculations that would be approximately 1350 rpm@ 75mph. I pull a reefer TX to WA back to TX. I'm generally grossing 80000 lbs. Would this be a good setup for running 70-75 mph and trying to obtain somewhat of a descent mpg? Is 1350 rpms a good rpm for that engine? Thank you for this video. Alot of drivers doesn't take any of this into consideration when spec'ing out a truck.

I hope everybody watches this, its great stuff. Its a little picky on my end but I have had it factor into some decisions in the past. Is rear axle manufacturer Meritor and Dana Spicer don't always offer the same ratios its minor sometimes one has 3.71 and the other 3.73 but still can be a little bit of a factor. Love the added production to this video.

Is there a big difference between Meritor and Dana Spicer axles, do both come with rear lockers, is Meritor/Dana better at one application than the other?? Is it best to stick with Standard Equipment if they all have the same weight rating??

It's interesting how short you gear trucks over there considering the speed you can run at, I wonder if increasing fuel costs will change this over time? For comparison in the UK an MX13 480 or 530 in a DAF with a ZF Traxon 12 AMT running at our normal 44000kg (96400lbs) at the EU mandated 90kph (56mph) limiter, will come normally with a direct top, 2.21 diff on 315/70R22.5 tyres giving just over 1000rpm on the limiter.

44,000 kg is equal to 96,800 foolish American pounds. Wish Ronald Regan would have had more intelligent teachers in the eighties or forced them out for refusing to learn metric, we would look a whole lot smarter. Like he did with air traffic controllers.

Those ratios are for optimal fuel milage but you hit any kind of grade,,,not to mention a 5 or 6 percent hill or mountain your gonna be going 15 mph up that grade,,,,need 3:73 rear ends with a 13 or 18 speed manual,,and 565 hours 1900 to 2300 foot bound of tork to pull hills at a good speed and still maintain 6 to 7 mpg
@Bendigo1
@Bendigo1 2 жыл бұрын
I used to think that too, I used to think 3.70 was low. but i now drive a truck with 2.97 and it pulls 6% at 80,000 at about 35 mph. i had a truck with 3.72 that wouldn't do that even with the same hp engine. Not sure if it is the transmission gearing making up for it or what, but it was surprising.

@@Bendigo1 80,000 at 35 mph isn't good my friend I have a t680 with 500 x15,,,,12 speed auto,,,,and I prefer 18 manual,,,but it has 3:70 rear ends and pulls all hills at 72 mph,,,,but one big key is my truck isn't governed at all I can start up hill at 80 mph and maintain 73 mph being heavy,,,,company trucks are slow and weak ,,and that cause huge traffic jam ups

@@Bendigo1 If you have 2.97 rears, your transmission most likely is a direct drive. A direct drive transmission will have a 2050 or 2250 driveshaft and the gear ratios will do a better job of multiplying the torque up to the direct drive which will be very close to the engine specs. If you run an emissions truck the engine is going to put heat into the oil at a faster rate climbing grades than a pre-emissions engine.

That is way too high for those speeds, you would want a 3.55 or lower to keep the fuel mileage reasonable.

Only when I’m looking for more new rear clip sale used. Not see 3:55 I’m see more3:35,3:42. 2;79 etc. I’m looking similar I have ratio. Have a great day

I have a 3.36 rear ratio when in 8th high. Which is a .73 ratio in a fuller 18 speed. Gives me 75 mph at 1,525 rpm. That is about as high of an rpm you want for going distance. If you want to go 80 mph. A 3.06 would be better. Because 80 mph with 3.36 rear & .73 tranny, will be 1,620 rpm. Not really to high of an rpm. The faster you turn it, the worse your fuel mileage will be. Plus higher rpm equates to more wear. All depends upon how long at what speed. Running in the flats or climbing the mountains. I run every where. Flat & mountains. The 3.36 allows me to cruise at 75 mph. Fairly decent fuel milage, not turning to fast. Since I am at the top of the power band, at 1,525 rpm. Small hills no need to downshift. In 8th low at .86 tranny gives me 1,790 rpm at 75 mph. So I can drop a gear and still stay at 75mph if the hill is not to steep. Without over reving. I would not want to rev that high for long periods. Due to fuel consumption & wear. Fine for short periods to blast by the slower hill climbers. Do a Google search for "Fuller 18 speed". You will get a link to the brochure that provides all the gear ratios. I have played with some of the online semi speed ratio calculators. They are never close to what I see in the real world.
