Hi Rob, I am having an issue, I would like to adjust the volume of the livestream from a separate mix. I’ve set CH1 “Mix9 L” and CH2 “Mix10 R” exactly what you did on the video 2:27 and adjusted each microphone's faders in Mix9-10 including the master, but the live stream still remains very quiet. If I understand it correctly, what you did here was set Mix 9-10 to be piped into the QU-24 USB Output, and to be picked up by the PC/Laptop’s input? If so, I guess I’d also like to understand how would we know which ST channel to pick the signal from on our PC/Laptop? Cause I believe there’s ST1, ST2, and ST3 channels?

If you're using windows, in sound output, you can select qu-16 ST1 or ST2 or ST3 as your output, and in ST1 procesing, source, select usb streaming.

Hi Rob - we record multitrack into the QuDrive. We run a house PA mix too. We want to add streaming through USB B with a different mix. The manual indicates that QU Audio Output Selection is SHARED with QuDrive. If I use mix 9/10 as a stereo mix (separate from the PA mix), and I select Mix 9/10 in USB Audio Channels 1 and 2 as your video shows... will that affect the Qu Drive recording? In other words is QUDrive recording Mix 9/10 plus channels 3-16 instead of native channels 1-16? If I'm right, we should only use channels 3-16 for inputs that we want to record. dSnake inputs 1 & 2 will be empty.

Rob, this was by far the easiest and straight forward QU-16 tutorial video I have watched. Thank you. Even after doing this, I still cannot get levels from the USB that are usable. They are entirely too low. So wonderfully clean, but so horrifically low. I worked in radio for 20+ years and I can tell I didn't listen to the engineer enough. It just seems like there's a magic button I don't have pressed. The board seems great and the laptops we have are pretty new, I just cannot get a workable level. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thx for the kind words. Glad you found it helpful. You are not alone on the issue of low levels for USB. It’s actually by design to ensure that levels don’t peak and become overdriven. There are two options. The easiest is to simply normalize the tracks after recording. Second is to increase the Direct out level since that’s typically where USB is tapped.

Looks like the above solves this but, to make sure. I want a mix for a livestream separate from the PA. I may want some mics coming in a little louder on the live stream than the PA and others not coming on the PA at all (e.g. drums/ambient room mics). Does this solve that dilemma?

What you describe is exactly what a “Mix” does. Be sure the mix is set as prefade and you will create a separate mix for your live stream. Its the very same concept as creating a monitor mix that’s unique for the singer or musician who is listening on stage.

Rob - related but need your help - 2 Q's please: 1) This video talks about routing a mix to USB. Other videos show how to route a mix to QU-Drive for recording (ex. route 5/6 to Ch. 17 and 18). But those videos and the AH user guide ONLY address "Stereo Recording". My question is if I route Mix 5/6 to channels 17/18 but do a MULTI-track recording - do you know if 5/6 will end up on 17/18? Meaning recorded tracks 1-16 are the individual input channels, but 17/18 are my routed 5/6, not the default L+R? 2) I've seen sources that say you CAN choose which of the 18 tracks to record multi...like inputs 1-5 only... but don't tell you how. I cannot find any way to do this. I've also read it's always all 18, no choosing. Any thoughts? Thank you.
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 5 ай бұрын
Great questions. 1) That is correct. Assigning the channels for USB is a single interface that applies to both USB ports (rear port for a computer and the front port for q-drive) 2) Yes you can choose. Open the USB dialog screen where all 18 channels are listed. Tap any channel to highlight, then use the dial knob to choose the channel to be recorded in that spot. You can also dial it all the way around to "X" to essentially turn out off. NOTE however: the q-drive software will "record" all 18 channels regardless of the source you choose. Some of the resulting WAV files will simply be blank...but you will always got 18 of them

@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
Great question Bryan. In the QU setup the designation of “Left and Right” can be confusing because it doesn’t really mean a stereo signal. By default, all channels are panned full center so signal goes to L&R equally. The only way to get a true stereo signal is the adjust the Pan on each individual channel. If you want signal in left only then you need to move the Pan of that channel to the left etc.
@RUTLANDSTUDIOS

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 So let’s say in my daw that I have a track panned left and then another track panned right….. and I run a playback. This is what I’m trying to get out of the mixer into the monitors and I can’t get those channels to work independently. Where if I use my small Scarlett interface the monitor inputs are simply right and left and the pans work accordingly. Does that make sense? I’m just struggling with this part a bit. The two tracks that you are playing back need to have the pan set on the desk to create separate LR signals. As far as the desk is concerned, the signal being sent from the daw is mono regardless of where the pan might be set in the daw. Use the desk Pan

@@essenceoftheanimal All channel have the option of getting signal from 3 "sources". Local is the physical XLR on the back of the board. Dsnake is an expansion box like an AR2412 etc. Finally USB is just as it sounds - input comes from the USB port. After recording, you need to change all channel input sources to USB in order to playback from Logic over USB. Welcome to the qu24. The LR association with 17 & 18 is limited to the qdrive one the qu16 specifically. The qu16 only outputs 18ch total so it defaults LR to 17 & 18. The qu24 however will output a total of 32 channels. This allows you to use you to use the first 24 USB ch as the 24 input channels on the board. The last 8 USB ch can then be assigned outputs should you want to record those. In you case to record LR, decide which USB ch you want to use (25-32). Lets say 25-26. On the output Patch / USB audio tab press the 19-32 button to get to the second page. Tap 25 and use the input dial to set it to L, then tap 26 and use the input dial to set it to R. In logic you should now be able to record LR on chs 25-26

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Hey Rob, Nope, 25-26 is armed. When unarmed no signal shows. When armed it gets a very weak signal. Thanks for enlightening me! Currently using OBS. @soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, OBS will require an asio driver (downloaded from their site I believe). Changing the source for channels only impacts the “input”. You are selecting the location of the incoming source signal for the channels your change. local = input signal for that channel comes from the physical XLR jack on the back of the QU32. USB = input signal for that channel comes from the Qdrive USB device plugged in to the top of the QU32. USB streaming = input signal for that channel comes from the USB port on the back of the unit where you have your PC/MAC computer connected. Its unlikely that you are playing back audio from OBS into the QU32 so you really have no need to change any channel input sources.

Thx Nhat. Hope you found it helpful. Unfortunately USB recording defaults to the direct out of each channel since the vast majority of those recording prefer not to include FX. Also the FX engine will process and include all channels assigned to that FX, so by default you cannot record a channel with FX as a separate discrete channel signal. The only way to record a single channel with FX is to first assign only that one channel to the FX and then set a USB record channel to pickup the designated FX return signal.

So when sending a signal to either OBS or Zoom when I select QU / Stereo out it receives whatever is on channel 1 and 2 So I have configured matrix 1&2 to receive L&R to send to other outputs. If I dial the usb I/O patch to channel 1 to matrix L and channel 2 to matrix R I should be able to control the level going to either OBS or Zoom as long as I have QU Stereo out selected as my audio input.

Great Video! I have a similar question. If I have 2 or 3 different mixes, can I send each of those mixes post-fader via USB and have that as individual channels on my system?
@soundadvicewithrob3083

If you want to send mixes via USB to record as single channels then simply choose the USB channel and dial the mix you want to assign to that channel. As I set USB channel 1 to be LR in the video, choose USB 3 and dial in Mix1 for example. Then USB2 and dial in mIx2 etc

Hi Rob, thanks for this advice! I hope you can help me with another question: I have a record with 20 tracks. I want to use the QU24 for mixing (EQ, Compressor, Effects, etc.) and the tracks in cubase are completely dry. My question: Is it possible that I make a mix-export in Cubase, with al the effects from the QU24? it is hard to explain, but I hope you understand me. ;)
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
Thx Reiner. The QU setup makes a separate audio signal for FX. In other words, the channel audio will always be dry and you would need to record the FX return to get audio with FX applied. This is actually by design since most recording engineers want the dry audio and FX audio separate. The only way to record an audio channel with FX already applied, would be to setup the FX as a channel insert. I have a video on that process

Rob, im still having major issues w my Q 16. i have a mic in input 2, then 3-4 & 5-6 i have 2 cd players connected and 7-8 a cassette deck playback ..how do i hear them AND how do I get them to be recordable in my pro tools session. a week or so ago i was able to HEAR the mic and CD players and played them out thru channels 15-16 to the Q output fader....now i have nothing...im using a Scarlett to get my mic in and i cant hear the audio of 2-6..im ready to toss this QU over the fence...
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry you’re having issues but I assure that you dont need to toss the QU16…once you get it sorted it will do fine job. Let’s try one issue at a time. 1) How do I hear them and how to have them record in pro tools. Make sure that your USB setup is 1 to 1… in other words on the USB setup screen (which I refer to in this video) USB1 = Ch1…USB2 = Ch2… USB3 = ch3 etc. Next for playback, make sure the source for all QU channels is “local”. In other words the QU is taking input signal from the XLR connection for each channel physically on the desk. Once thats confirmed, then pro tools should see each of the channels on the QU as an input. Set each track to record a channel from the QU. After recording, assuming you then want to replay that recording you need to change the input source for each QU channel to be “USB”. You now want the QU to take the input for each channel from USB rather than from the XLR port.

Hi, thanks for the vid. Clear and well presented. I'm using the 24/12 stage box with the main L/R (11/12) out going to PA and wanting to send mix 9/10 to stream via USB-B. When I've followed these instructions on the video it sends mix 9/10 to respective outputs on stagebox as it should but It still sends main L/R down the USB B for streaming. Not quite sure what I'm doing wrong... advice would be appreciated. I'm an SQ user but have a QU at my school. To get around this I've sent the main L/R to stream and mix 9/10 to FOH. Cheers & Thanks.

Thx Craig. Glad it was helpful. These instructions assume you are sending USB to a simple stereo only device, like an iPhone or iPad which only listens to CH1 & CH2. If you are sending USB to a daw (computer) then most likely the device is listening to the full USB stream and picking up the default stereo output which is CH17 & CH18 ( see the box around those two channels on screen). Try changing 17&18 to mix9&10.

Hi Willy. As far as I know, Audacity can only record one channel at a time. You can repeat the process to create a multiple channel project, but again only one at a time. It’s not a multichannel recording app. Try Reaper it works quite well

Once you have changed USB 1&2 to Mix9&10, this will allow GarageBand to record Mix9&10 on USB channels 1&2. The change I described doesn’t effect playback, so I’m not sure what you’re describing when you say the Mac is playing back on 1&2. Tell me a little more about what you’re trying to accomplish
