Congratulations on your big move! I went the other way, from owning my own practice for about 5 years to going corporate. There’s pros and cons to each in any given stage of life, but for me, with 2 young kids, and living in one of the most expensive cities in the US, it’s a welcome relief for now to receive the support of a large company. Your production quality and multiple planned streams of income will hopefully help overcome the grind of a traditional service-based practice. Best of luck to you. also as a junior software developer: really? I was rocking a dualcore thinkpad in university and now at work I got a ~800 dollar notbook 16gb ram, no dedicated gpu .... Feel like it is okay 80% of the time. ML requires gpu but coding...

If you are into rendering, make sure it got RAM upgrade option. u can upgrade to 64GB ram in laptops .

Ive had a zenbook pro duo for a couple semesters now, its honestly been revolutionaru in terms of my workflow. It feels a little bit underpowered compared to the rig I use for gaming for instance, but being able to pull panels onto the second screen has beein instrumental for stuff like assembling my portfolio/cleaning up drawings and working in rhino and grasshopper simultaniously

Nice content, really hit the key points. For Archi Student, a gaming laptop running in Windows is the best option. Just ensure RAM are upgradable to 32GB or the best at 64GB Additional SSD slot is a big help. I am using a GIGABYTE AERO 15 (10th GEN) with 32GB ram no issues with Autodesk Prod & Rendering software.

I personally never before was working on the computer or laptop to create anything , just in my head , that was my computer and a peas of peper and that was all , sometimes even without any drowning just materials to making small models . But like I said before , the competition is so huge , and I know that is so many people who are brilliant , much better then me , plus my fantastic vision , because currently I feel like a grandma who has 56 years , my birthday is on the 13th of December . I was born exactly on the 13th December in 1966 . So I preferred to give better chance to the younger people to new generation , because theirs ideas propoblly are more interesting but still in my head is always room for this precious hobby, But not only just Architecture was in my head but many more other things , yes well . One thing I know that can't be so many Architectures , only just few but just the best .

Small correction: Mac ram sizes are not upgradeable, they are soldered into the board. That's why future proofing when you buy one is important. Other laptops however may have unsoldered ram which means an easy and a cheap upgrade

As a student for architectural engineering, I am using revit and autocad almost daily and creating tons of work and projects. When considering a computer I went with one which you actually suggest (the Asus TUF F15). The F15 has proven to be exactly what i was looking for. Besides the less than stellar graphics and a quick ram upgrade (16gb->32gb), it runs like a beast. Handles everything I need with proper speed and efficiency and has a ton of custom features if you’re a gamer too. It is overall a great choice. 9/10 would recommend.

I love my Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. I never thought I would have a Microsoft computer it has been great for four years and is still going strong. My advice would be to not have too much brand loyalty when it comes to PCs. The companies making the best products at the best values are always changing. I think Macs are consistently a premium product at a premium price. Just be prepared for the compatibility quirks and IT support that is used to PCs struggling to help with your Mac.

I would like to get Microsoft Surface Pro laptop which can also be used as a tablet but the screen size is 13" inch, to which I'm not so sure about.

@@audreyyyhappened6831 I have a docking port with an extra wide, curved LG monitor and a Das mechanical keyboard. The 13 inch screen is good enough when I am out and about and the monitor gives me lots of room to work at home. It is admittedly an expensive setup but it’s also quality stuff that I’ve had for years. One could probably get away with a USB hub instead of the overpriced docking port. There are also monitors and keyboard for a range of budgets. For some reason Das keyboards don’t seem to even be on the fancy keyboard reviewer’s radar but I really like mine. While they are plenty expensive they are not as expensive as a lot of the mechanical keyboard out there. The same can be said for the LG monitor. It’s not fancy enough for the dedicated gamers but it’s a nice upgrade from the standard employer issued monitors. If an external monitor isn’t an option for you, you might consider something with a bigger screen. There are lots of good options out there. I think Lenovo is an often overlooked brand.

But for now as a student on loan, I'll take your advice on getting laptops with bigger screen size. I looked into Lenovos but their graphics that are under my budget aren't as great compared other brands I've been eyeing. I've set my eye on a MSI Katana, which is a little over 1000 but I feel confident that it can last at least 5 years with its horsepower. Anyways thanks for sharing! Microsoft Surface is still a very appealing product. I hope I'll get my hands on one when I need it.

I just got a vivobook with a ryzen 9 that craps all over the M1 max one, a RTX 3050, an oled 100% DCI screen and only cost £800. The only reason to buy a MacBook these days is if you cant live without the operating system

And since you don't need a big GPU to draw in wireframe, it makes zero sense to get it. Rather buy M1 Pro with 32GB of ram and 1TB of storage. Much better buy. That's what I have

Dami I work in the IT industry and I know that at first glance Intel may look like they are leading the way but with the performance your going to need for the programs you are using AMD is the better way to go because when dealing with overheating and performance intel has Dropped the ball to where PCs have even been known catch fire when being used. also when it comes to software one of the best things to do is look into using SSD (Solid-State Drive) Hard drives or M.2 drives for storage and as your primary hard drive in particularly at 500 GB as an OS (Operating System) drive and a 1TB or 2TB as storage most Laptops will come with space to accommodate 2 M.2 drives. this set up with make you PC boot 100 times faster than a mechanical hard drive and you don't have to worry about the sound.

I just bought the newly Macbook M2 Pro 13" with 24Gb RAM and 1TB SSD the installation of softwares didn't came easy as most architecture/3D softwares available are running mainly on windows and intel chip but gladly apple made the rosetta 2 for a runaround, very happy with the performance of M2 Pro so far when it comes to 3D Rendering on Blender can't believe the skip I've made since the previous years I've been using GTX1050 Ti 4Gb gpu laptop personally with Sketchup, Lumion 10, Vray and Enscape. Same reasons why i decided to go with mac is also for the photo editing in my photography as well as editing videos of both Premier and After Effects. I know there are lots of other machines out there that outperforms macbook m2 right now but this one is just the one perfect for what I need.

I'm studying interior design with a minor in architecture. Good to know how things fit together both ways. Dami, I really appreciate your videos. Thank you. A few years back I came up with a similar setup. A portable solution, combined with a workstation. After much research and testing, I settled on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 plus, combined with a powerful AMD workstation. Using apps, I am able to use the tablet as a graphics tablet for my desktop (both wired and wireless, and remotely). And it works as a second screen as well. Similar to the apple second screen ability. But this works with nearly any OS. I enjoy being able to work in one window on my tablet, and have another open which is displaying or working on something from the desktop. My computer is in the home office, while I could be in the living room on the couch. Nothing is ever perfect, but this has been working extremely well.

Strictly speaking, "Workstations" have become "mobile" so you might want to reference "Desktop Workstations" independently of "Workstations". For example, the Dell Precision 5470 or 5570 are mobile Workstation laptops.

I just feel never recommend Mac to architectural designers, especially students; maybe in some cases like presentation, it's convenient. However, the hardware of Mac is not powerful enough, and there are so many restrictions in the systems. ( some people might say we can install windows as well, but that's kind of stupid, to be honest. does that mean you just want the "apple logo"?) If you are just a person who loves to do regular work, that might be good for you, but if you like to try something new and work between different software to create diverse designs; then Windows is much much better. personal experience...

I would personally recommend against a Surfacebook, as that was my original and when it spontaneously refused to work nobody wanted to try and fix it because it was “technically a tablet”. This is why I would recommend an iPad for something like this as you’ll always be able to just take one to the apple store and can simply export the drawings

i work in film doing set management & IT, & i use an Asus flow x13. its super light & portable, & lets me draw on the display for annotating photos on set. but off set it connects to an external gpu for video editing & more intensive tasks. its an odd machine, but perfect for my needs.

As a creator, screen size and a very accurate touchpad are critical to me. I've tried lots of Windows laptops, including the latest gen Asus Zenbook Pros, and none compare to the Macbook Pros. I started with an M1 Air, found the screen too limiting, and now use a Macbook Pro M1 Ultra 16". Fantastic laptop, and performance for apps in Parallels is not bad at all for light to medium design work.

For me, I'm not much of an apple fan. But I will give credit to where it's due. I am always on the go, and I seldom have places for me to go to where a charger is available to me. So the MacBooks have been a life saver for me. Never needed to use an outlet until I got back home.

Another great video from Dami! I see how picking a laptop can be intimidating for newbies. It is very important to identify your needs, budget and living situation. I would recommend giving yourself some allowance for growth. You learn a lot in your first couple of years working and you really dont want to hit the skill ceiling a cheap laptop would be able to give you within a year.

My wife started working in the construction, then studied for Surveyor and now is going into Engenieering. A workstation is so much faster that we build one, is a gaming/worstation mix so It can justify Its existence as she also bought a laptop. So a Laptop cant be a workstation, unless you want to get frustrated a lot, a workstation can be up to 4 times faster, so 15 min instead of an hour. However a Workstation cant be a laptop, you need power on the go as this type work is not office work. My advice is to beggin with a laptop as she did and then build a workstation to help you with times.

As a student a boarding school, i needed a great all around laptop, with a display large enough for entertainment, and yet small enough for every day carry. I also needed to be powerful, but cheap. I ended by settling on the Asus tuf A15, and i can recommend it to every body who is also looking for a laptop. I find it a great computer to work on and a great entertainment device. I should come with some critique it would be the plastic shell which is prone to scratches, and as Dami said her self the loud fans.

That's why I decided to think about buying one of the two. if you are a male student, just get a 17.3in screen gaming laptop . I'd argue that even for a small gal, the extra 1 kilo it brings, is still worth it. Having been a student, working ocastionaly on 15.6in was not fun and you need to bring it everywhere, so an extra screen is rarely an option. Performance: CPU: 12700H -best bang for buck. By this time next year, we'll probably have Zen 4 and Meteor Lake mobile, so who knows, but for now, AMD's offerings are not the best. 12900 is not worth extra money. GPU: you'll want Nvidia for CUDA/OptiX. 3060(100W+) - if rarely rendering; 3070(115W+) - good balance; 3080(130-150W) 16GB - if rendering a lot but still mobile (at this point, one could argue that having a workstation might be a good idea). Be careful as there are lower powered cards that are not worth paying for. 115W 3060 >= 80W 3070. Check the specific wattage of specific laptops. RAM: 32GB, indeed. Crashing when in hurry for a deadline is not fun. There are 16GB obtions that you can upgrade, so check that too. Decent screen. Everything else is extra, IMO. I'd look for keyboards with numpad, for example. As a sidenote, check if macOS is supported by your particular software. Windows is a safer bet in that regard.

If you get the budged get a Asus Strix. Has the best cooling system out there. Uncapped or nerfed GPUs , supports 96gb ram. i7 and i9s version. I'm gonna use it for something heavier than architecture. So arxchitecture should be hella fine. 100% recommeded. Look it up.

Not really. Needs at least 500GB SSD space for all your software & projects, and the 8GB RAM will bottleneck your performance, 16GB min. If the laptop is very cheap (700~800 $/€), buy those parts seperately and upgrade the device with this better hardware.

You allude to it here - but the importance of use case can't be stressed enough. In my case, weight matters a lot. I travel a lot. Work has assigned me a laptop. That is 3 lbs (not including chargers). I game a lot too outside of work. A 5 lb gaming laptop is out (that's 8 lbs) - not including chargers. Can I reuse power bricks (usb-c charging) reducing some weight... stuff like this.

If you are really balling out there is a completely obvious choice in this department now. Razer Blade 18. 100%DciP3 coverage, 24 cpu cores, almost 10000 cude cores and 16GBs of frame buffer. It is actually insane what that computer can do while weighing 7lbs. We have come a long way.

Great review and congratulations on your new business venture as self employed. @DamiLee regarding the 2-in-1 laptops the Spectre line from HP is bulky. You should've looked at the EliteBook X360 as there are both 13" and 14" models and up until 2 yrs ago the HP DragonFly also was an X360 only but that model is discontinued. M series laptops even when running VMWare or Parallels for win11 run faster than cote i5/i7 spec'd non external gpu laptops that are only windows based. The need for a scratch drive is inherent to macOS since it copies data on the disk for any action something Aple really needs to resolve. Any macOS user can see this by showing hidden files and folders after having content to external SSDs trust me you'll be shocked.

Framework 16 and 13 are both good options if you value repairability They do come at a premium compared to laptops of similar prices

As architecture student is chose an unconventional route: Brand new ASUS TUF 15, for 1200€ (ca.⅔ of usual prices). I agree with your points, it's a bit to loud, but one of the most powerful laptops available. The i7-12700 and RTX 3060 mobile, as well as the main board should do their job well for at least 5 years. For the operating system I chose Debian Linux. While it offers freedom, better protection, and is a trustworthy OS for your data, the lack of natively supported software is significant. You are mostly limited to Blender, FreeCAD, and other OpenSource-software. Whilst the ”WINE“-compatibility-layer allows for Windows only Software like Vectorworks or Maya can take hours, and is not guaranteed to work. It's complicated, not fun, it took almost a weekend to set up, but I'm happy with it.

I used to use a laptop many years ago, but I'm all desktop now. I run too much, too hard, all at once. I've been using the same chassis for over six years. The endless upgradeability and modularity are what I need. I fried the GPU on my laptop back in the day because it couldn't handle the thermal load. For me, a tablet with cloud services is looking most likely if I require portability in the future. With that said, there are some awesome laptops that are constantly beckoning me.

If it ain't broke, why fix it! I think a workstation and a tablet is a great combo. There are so many good options for tablets these days and if you get a portable keyboard, it pretty much functions as a laptop for basic tasks when you're on the go 😉

I took physics and math, which were pre requisites, but also art classes, which helped me build my portfolio. If you have drafting, woodworking or architecture classes, I would recommend taking them as well :) Good luck!

Nothing beats a desktop for serious and heavy work such as multi-tasking, rendering, etc. There were times, however, when I was required to travel. How I wish I had the current crop of 14” or 13” laptops then.

Actually today, there are plenty of choices of laptop with slim/non-"gaming" look and decent performance. Just pick laptop with Intel Iris and dedicated graphic like MX150 or MX230. Even gaming laptops nowadays are slimmer and minimalistic, for example: HP Omen 2021. Compared to 2016, where the only powerful laptops for this purpose were either Macbook Pro lines or Gaming laptop.

I have a super powerful PC at home and a 500$ laptop that I remote to my desktop from anywhere. The performance has been really great, I can literally do hour long renders just sitting at a cafe. (You need 100Mb or more internet at home though)

I run Linux but emulation of windows is spot on. If I must I can spin up a virtual machine too. I like the thinkpad, asus, and hp laptops but usually running amd and linux os.

one or two SSD's of big capacity, Dedicated rendering GPU, External screen for colors in final renderlings. Id recomend the G502 mouse above that MX2/3 mouse everybody uses, its just too slow ,inaccurate and not customizable enough for macros Id recomend using. Cool vids, wish I had this while studying ;)
