Thanks for the video Ali. I guessed from the title what it might be! Since our lesson/ fitting, I’ve done some thinking and realised that we amateurs often go through this hand-wringing experience when we consider changing our irons. As you know, I have a set of “player’s” irons (Callaway X-forged) and I’ve still got my old TaylorMade Speedblades ( power-bats) First, I’m very happy with my Callaways, they feel great, they look great, not many people have them so they feel a bit exclusive. Also, they don’t have a massive sole, which, to me, helps them have a pleasant “turf interaction”. “WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE?” I hear you ask. Well.... you’ve all guessed it, they don’t give me the distance I crave. The Speedblades give me the distance. But they fall down on the other things especially in the shorter clubs. The Callaways win hands down on approach shots from 130 yards in. But... as you mention, I need to have two 6-irons, one from each set. The Callaway 5-iron doesn’t perform as well as the Speedblades 6-iron. This club has the right distance and is forgiving. A bit like Mark Crossfield I then move on to a selection of hybrids which work well up to the top end of the bag. So why change? Good question. I just thought that the new P770s and P790s may just be the club to do both jobs. Look and feel as good as the Callaways, but have the distance and forgiveness of the TMs. I left the session a bit underwhelmed. The P790s certainly gave me the distance at first, but I got tired towards the end. The 770s didn’t give enough extra yards to warrant a change. We all want our clubs to do both. Feel AND distance..... Off to the gym? Chris.

What irons did you go for in the end Chris, did they live up to your expectations and out of interest what handicap are you?

I'm not sure why you don't have 250k subscribers. All your videos are informative and helpful- not just reviews of shinny new objects. 👍

Good luck. I just picked up my p770. They are amazing. I did the fitting hitting taylormade balls 5x. They felt a little hard. Now I’m hitting my ball prob1x. And man do they feel great. Way softer feel. Make sure you get fitted with the same ball you hit normally

@@winston9971 I am looking at these two sets of irons as well. My concern is I have the rocketbladez and they have a great amount of offset. This causes me to turn the ball to far when I draw it. Curious if the P770 would work for me but nervous cause it does have less offset and I’ll probably have to get use to that ?

@@ariesnc6320 no I’m sure you’ll be fine. Just make sure you get fitted to See how you like them

I think I’d put him into 790 all the way. But if he wanted a mix, do a 5,6,7 in 790, and a 8-aw in 770 with strengthened lofts, instead of 2 6 irons.

Any thoughts on fliers from the P790?

At the end of the day, I think that buying something new is always the same process: no matter what, if you don’t like the look, there’s no way it will ever satisfy you.

Why not weaken the loft on the 790?

These two sets are on my radar along with mizuno hot metal pro and srixon zx7. Have you any preference on these sets Ali as I am a high spin player but like players distance irons

Wish the p790s lokked more like the p770. The grey on the p790 makes it look cheap and nasty.

Golf is too easy, just get blades. They look awesome. 😍

Not quite sure why TM released this iron. It’s definitely not a 790 replacement as some were saying early on. Weaker lofts, smaller club, less forgiving is not a recipe to replace the 790.
@AliTaylorGolf4 жыл бұрын
It's not to replace but offers something different. In my testing 770 is a bit more consistent on distances with spin control.

The general feedback from the p790’s is that they went too far and the odd hot one flew off the face. They addressed it all with the p770 plus made it look more like a blade to appeal to lower handicap players and making it more workable. It’s not a replacement for the p790 it’s another option depending on if you want the extra distance or not.

Great content, I’m looking to combo these but the difference in lofts worries me with gapping. I know TM has a combo guide but I’m not sure about changing lofts which will change offset.

Depend more at which club you combo I think

@@AliTaylorGolf it would be great if they did a full blended combo set taking the best of both P770 & P790........P780?!?!
