I love the magic erasers too. I cut them into 1-inch cubes to use. I also like polymer eraser tips that you can put on the end of a pen or pencil. I feel like I have more control over small parts of the book with the fine point of the eraser.

The eraser is a life saver for cleaning. You want to go slow. One side of those erasers seems more abrasive. I practiced on about 20 old beaters until I learned what worked. I take before and after shots with my iPhone. You will be amazed at the difference. It especially worked really good on the back covers and that's where a lot more dirt accumulates on the older ones. Once I was done I went over the entire cover ever so gently and wiped it with a soft cloth. Your 100% right the eraser is a huge help. You hear people saying it removes gloss but I never had an issue until I pressed really really hard which I did on a beater to see how much pressure it could take. Great video Regie.

The newer erasers definitely have ridges. 👎🏾 I don’t care for that. I have several of the older erasers that are perfectly flat. I prefer those. The difference really is amazing. And, you’re spot on regarding going slow and taking your time. You can ruin anything if you rush and/or do not pay attention.

excellent suggestion. I do the same thing when I buy valuable Raw comics before permanently adding it for storing but I use white cotton inspection gloves when cleaning abrasion and finger print because I can feel the grain of the cover more. I am 57 years old now and my eyes don't work as well as they use to, so I adapted my dads technique by using a large magnifying glass (when he check his coins) clamped to my glass work table with LED lamp for extra lighting. I also press my books using a T-Shirt press machine that I bought in E-Bay and afterward sandwiching it between two boards inside a clean mylar. I do not submit my books for grading but I do anything to keep them as fresh as possible.

Haha, one more thing. I use microfiber cleaning towels out of the auto department in most stores I get them from the dollar store. They are lint free and absorbent. These towels will clean 90 percent of the comic without any ink removal I have found.

Great video Regie, enjoyed it very much. What advise would you offer for working an area that contains color breaking creases or ticks. Also any additional cleaning after removing the book from the moisture tank, right before pressing? Does the moisture assist in any way in removing something that wouldn’t come off previously?
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
I would clean the book before the moisture bath and press. This should be the first thing that is done. Anything outside of this would be experimentation that I would not want to communicate. Care should be taken with any defects (e.g., creases, bends, folds, tape, etc). Some folks prefer erasers that can be placed on the tip of a pencil for working in small tight areas.

Make sure you practice on crap low to no value books please.. Love Regie and he has his own way.. I have to say their are alot of things missing from this video to safely clean comics.. When you wipe, please do not wipe in a back and forth motion you can cause scratches (too much pressure during microfiber) and dents.. If your going to use Regie's microfiber cloths fold it nicely into a 3"x3" or so square, use an unsharpened pencil with the eraser head as the handle or vice versa and use the weight of the pencil for your guide.. then wipe slowly and gently in clock wise and counter clock wise circles..

I had to show what would happen because folks would ask. 😂 Technically I warned you up front that something would happen. Pressure is such an important element of cleaning. I’m not sure of gloss can be restored. I’m also not sure what impact that would have on a book during the grading process. I’m certain that someone has figured out how to add gloss but that is beyond my experiences.

I appreciate your post. I've always had an aversion to cleaning them for fear of damage but dry cleaning seems the least invasive and I'll give it a try. I've got plenty of boards and I just got the eraser. One question. You wipe down the book with a clean cloth first and I like that. How do you feel about treated wipe cloths like the type treated to pick up dust? I'm thinking chemicals but then again the Mr. Clean eraser would be similar. Your thoughts? Best.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t use chemicals so I can’t comment. Sorry. I prefer to use mechanical means to clean. My goal is to use the least abrasive item to remove the most dirty from the comic as possible. I'm interested to see you send a comic to cgc as is to see it's grade, and when you get it back clean it, press it, and resubmit to see what the difference would be. It would probably be quite an investment but it would be cool to quantify how much value your work is!

Loving this!! Think I know the answer, but what do you do if there is dirt in a colored area? Just run the washcloth over it I’m assuming since the magic eraser would be bad. Or is there something else?
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
I use the cloth and the magic eraser. The magic eraser will remove everything if you press too hard but gentle pressure will allow you to remove the dirt before removing the ink. Look back at the footage of the Hulk book. It was dirty in the color and non-color areas. It's easier to show improvement for the purpose of video in the white areas but the process is the same.

I have thought several times about adding the Magic Eraser to my cleaning arsenal, after seeing this I'll go ahead and pull that trigger. I will still be using my erasers as well as I have developed really good control over them through the years. I like that you added a Microfiber cloth too, that is one of my most important tools for comics. I also use a large make up brush to gently brush away the eraser crumbs. I can't recommend these enough from brushing off crumbs to dry brushing models and miniatures, they are amazing. My wife claims they can be used on the face to, but I find that a little far fetched. 8^) All in all some good tips, so thanks for the video, I'm certain that it helped some people out.

Hi Reggie. Strange Academy dark covers really take to finger prints. The finish isnt exactly gloss? Its like a matte finish? So it seems like taking of prints is even harder. Have you had any experience removing fingerprints from this type of book? Seems like the ink on the cover is very easy to come off as well. Also, definitely do NOT use absorbene on this cover.

Cleaning water stains is possible but you are talking advanced cleaning techniques that fall more in the realm of restoration. I have only removed water stains from paperback books, not had the courage to try it on a comic yet. The key ingredient to removing them is distilled water. Some people use a 50% water/white vinegar solution but I am a little fearful of getting even mild acids near my comics and books.

Regie, Thanks for making this video! I live in New Orleans and have been unable to find anyone local to clean my comics, and only one person who will press them. Will definitely try your techniques. Question: are you able to use the same techniques on a books interior, or are they limited to the cover? Thanks!

Glad that you found the video helpful. I have to think about that. I have never had a need to clean the inside pages of a book.

Was waiting to see this one, Regie. I've been cleaning and pressing for about 6 months now. Always enjoy any extra tips to pick up. I really enjoy the cleaning and pressing process. I have a ASM #300 in the press now. Which is my second copy that isn't signed.

Regie. Do you have idea how CGC cleans the comics they receive ? They must have special techniques. I know they are super backlogged so it must take a long time to clean a really dirty white back cover. I don't know if I have the patience to clean my comics. I will give it a try :)

Excellent and informative video. My wife also loves the magic Erasers. We have the 4x ones. I read in a comment here to better go with regular ones. I have a question: I got some comics from the 90’s, and they have some tanning on the cover. Specifically a Conan 275 that I cherish. The tanning is on the price box and the upc box. Do you have experience with tanning on covers? Do you recommend the magic Erasers on that ? Thanks for the great content! 🙏🏼
@RegieCollects

Thanks for watching the video bro. Nothing can help with tanning. Sorry. The good news is that tanning doesn’t hurt the books grade as much as foxing. 😀 Be well bro.
@superariosto
@superariosto 4 жыл бұрын
Regie Collects thanks a lot man! I appreciate. I thought there was nothing to do with tanning as it is a chemical process. It’s good to know that tanning brings down the grade less than foxing. Where can I find this kind of hierarchy on grade “hits”? My current and only source is the Overstreet grading guide”, and can’t find it online except for what’s already on that book

And here I thought this video was done awhile back and I just couldn't find it lol.. thanks man. I purchased absorbene and a few other drafting paper cleaning materials last month. And I must of subliminally known I needed magic erasers and bought the 20 pack Stik brand on Amazon really cheap. I used one for the dishes and didn't like it lol. Now I know what I need them for haha. Great vid as always bro!

I’m going to start cleaning and pressing my books. Something I’ve really been thinking about. Why pay someone when you can learn and do it yourself!? Do you have recommendations on a tee shirt press? Loving these videos! Funny thing is, my wife mentioned using a magic eraser on a book and I laughed.. Hard pill to swallow, showing her this video. She’s really full of herself right now..hahaha!!!

I have a question, so does that means that the old ink are way better than the current one? I’m still trying to find the perfect way to clean. For brown stains, can we use that magic brush? Btw what is that magic brush call? 😅

I would just go with the regular pads. I was at the store today and saw the 4x. I went with the normal ones and they seem to work fine. 4x may be too abrasive.

Great vid. I have tried a few bronze comics for pressing. Used the humidity chamber and when pressed, the covers are great. But noticed if comic is laid flat there is a slight curve or 2 and completely flat. What am i doing wrong? Thx
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I not sure what you are asking. Are the comics slightly curved or completely flat?
@dkthief
@dkthief 3 жыл бұрын
@@RegieCollects ok. kinda hard to explain. So if you lay the comic flat on a table and the spine is to the right and if you are at eye level with the comic toward the top, not the face of the comic but where the top and bottom cover sandwiches the pages, its not totally flat. Maybe better example if you hold the comic in the bag and board upright you can se the wave there also. It be easier to show a pic but don't think i can add it here
