Thanks for the video...I went ahead and did this...First i boiled lots of water, i put the filters in seperate containers big enough to hold each..Then i poured the rolling boiling water in ,and sumerged both..Then after about 20 min i grabbed each filter and lifted them up and back down, swishing the water thru them..This got tons out of the filters..Next i pulled them out after about 45 min...Let them cool a little , and powerwashed them like you did..I did that for about 30 min, being careful to not go to hard and damage them.I then reboiled water and repeated this process the same way, and powerwashed again afterwards..They came super clean, i was very happy with the results .I then put them in the sun to dry..The next day they were reinstalled ,and everything is perfect..I driven about 10,000 miles since then ,and life is good, no problems..

I've recently had a DPF issue on my Mini Countryman, and ended up cutting my filter open, performing a high temperature pyrolytic clean (in our self-cleaning oven no less...) and then pressure wash in the reverse direction as you have shown here. By using the high temperature process first, it made sure all of the unburnt fuel in the filter was already turned to ash, (without chemicals) and making it much easier for the pressure washer to clean the remaining particles clean. thanks for sharing

with out proprietary software how do you update the dpf miles in the computer? cleaning is only 1/2 the battle- the light is still on unless you update the module. every pound of diesel has soot in it. years ago it just went into the atmosphere, now we trap it, burn it, spray chems on it, then remove the filter, clean the filter and flush it down the drain into our water supply. besides making several new industries to either delete the dpf or clean it, what has been accomplished with all that crap the epa has mandated! another prime example of the fourth branch of government forcing crony capitalism down our throats.

I worked at international dealership and I serviced the doc and dpf. we used fsx air machine and I was quite impressed, I thought it did a great job. my opinion was it was stupid we collected the soot from the items then throw the soot in the garage. the soot ends up in the environment anyway. that still has to be way better than removing from water. I also thought EPA was stupid...... how is it illegal to idle more than 5 minutes but somehow good for the environment to run at 1200 rpm for half hour dumping raw fuel in the exhaust? bp and mobile must have designed after treatment system.

jeff westbrooke how much do it cost to have DPF cleaned at the dealership? I have a ProStar with the regen system
@mibars5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't work like this: Soot is caught by DPF and burned off either during heavy load or when engine enters regen mode. Soot is carbon, it goes into CO2 and flows out of your exhaust as a gas. What stays in the filter is ash - non-burnable solids that pass through your engine and come from oil and fuel additives, engine wear products or even very fine dust particles that make their way through air filter and get stuck in DPF. You get only tiny fraction of ash in your exhaust compared to soot, otherwise your DPF would get filled in no time.

I want to add an update to my previous story and that is that after we change the filter I went on another trip and had more problems with my DPF. My DPF light went on but I was not able to regen at all.I was able to get to a mechanic before it went to level four and he found that all of the sensors were in the wrong position.now that the DPF was cleaned the sensors were receiving information that did not make sense to the information they should be receiving since all sensors were in the wrong positions the data they were receiving was also incorrect.the mechanic was able to move the sensors to the right positions and allowed the truck to go into regen process.I think cleaning the DPF was the catalyst that expose the real underlying problem of the sensors being in the wrong position since all of the sensors were able to receive information due to the unclogged DPF filter now the data that they were receiving did not make sense with the information they should be receiving.the moral to the story is make sure that all of the sensors are in the correct position before digging into more complicated Solutions says there's a good possibility that the DPF system was worked on prior with another owner or mechanic. This mayhelp you reduce your repair cost once you know that the DPF sensors are all in the correct position on the DPF housing.

I'm not sure what the substrate of the filter media consists of but I can't see why you couldn't pre-soak the dpf filter in a hot bath mixed with CLR or similar product to soften/loosen the carbon soot buildup then a short rinse with high pressure water. Another option I wondered for older diesels like mine without emissions and EGR is a simple steel mesh air filter like the same one used on the intake side to capture carbon soot particles, then wash it out at every oil change "B" service.

@j.e.23236 жыл бұрын
Dont wet wash a dpf, period. I clean DPFs. The process is as follows: visually inspect the clean side of the dpf. What you're looking for is small cracks in between the cells, shifting ceramic or more than 20 corrupted cells. A very easy way to tell from a visual inspection if your dpf is bad is if there is soot all around the outer diameter of the clean side. If the dpf passes visual, we pin them. Were checking for soot depth. Then we flow them on the fsx table and correspond that reading to the fsx provided spec. After pinning we blow them out, on average a moderately dirty dpf will take 20 minutes. Then we reflow and pin again. If the dpf is still out of spec, we bake them in a kiln for 12 hours. This allows the remaining particulate particles to be broken down and blown out after a second time through the machine. Wet washing a dpf is a highly inefficient way to clean them. Its ceramic...you dont get ceramic wet. It's common sense

Bryan Case Coffee mugs are also coated with glass on the inside and most of the outside. Also, what liquid is being used in FSX's machine and how it's delivered play a huge role. Not a stretch for their specialized machine to safely clean a DPF if pressure washing it doesn't.

I have a question about residual water that may be left in the filters! I guess you could blow some out with compressed air, but these filter look to be very deep (long) so even after blowing them out with air would still leave a LOT of moisture within the internals of the filter, do you let them dry out for a period of time before installing them? or do you just mount them back on the truck and let the exhaust heat dry them out?
@davidwilde53186 жыл бұрын
Why hasn't anyone suggested using your oven to dry it out? If it can handle high heat cleaners, why not a house hold oven cranked up for 2 hours??

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure of the pressure washers specs. Glad I could help otherwise though.

How long do you let it air dry before replacing it?
@davidb10894 жыл бұрын
You can let it cook in the truck without connecting it to the scr or you can blow it out since they hold water for a very long time

How long do you let the filter dry for?
@alexandremeyer0 Жыл бұрын
I let it sit overnight and it wasn't enough. After reinstalling water was coming. I would suggest dry with air blower and let it dry for 2-3 days minimum.

I’m still blown away the federal government thinks it’s a good idea to put that much of a restriction in a turbocharged diesel. I just deleted the converter on my turbo unleaded motor and picked up about 50 hp in the low RPM range and increase my fuel mileage by 30% turbos love to breathe

MI Backyard Engineer their interest in not in the lifespan of your engine unfortunatly, but just the environment. i had my dpf gutted by a tuner for 150 euros, a new one costs about 1200-1500.
@red66chevy6 жыл бұрын
Dpfs on big trucks are hardly a restriction. not like your cat on your car at all. a plugged dpf you will see 1 psi . not enough to cause a reduction in performance by any means. trucks run 30 psi of boost so that's at least 32 psi between exhaust valve and turbo, and then it drops to on average 0.5 -0.7 psi between turbo and aftertreatment.

thanks so much for the video very helpful . i did the same as the video . after the black ash came out i noticed so brown or dark orange color started coming out also. just asking myself did the filter got damege or some ?????????
@SalimKhan-gk1fh3 жыл бұрын
You will get orange coloured particles come out it’s where these DPF filters get redhot trying to regenerate it turns the ash to an orange colour if orange coloured water came out that’s a good sign you are flushing it out!

inlet side of DPF is fantastic clean. before making this video have you cleaned/wiped inlet side ?
@TheDieseler7 жыл бұрын
Mushegh Hayrapetyan I believe there was only a regeneration performed before the cleaning. Regenerations should be ran before cleaning whenever possible. Especially if air cleaning since air cleaners cannot remove Soot.

I cleaned one dd15 dpf today. My hot water pressure was 45psi and I just used nelson fireman's nozzle instead of pressure washer. I did like in your video. But I tried flow direction also. I think 5 minute one direction and 5 minute opposite direction will give you better results. I saw brown pieces of ash(like little stones) was coming out from both ends.. it took 45 minute until everything came out. After washing I did a test using long wire/rod. measured different areas. I see some spots where half inch hardened ash is packed and did not came out. Overall this method is much better than bake and blow. thank you for posting this video !

On the newer trucks would you have to reset the computer after cleaning?..thanks for the video btw
@TheDieseler7 жыл бұрын
Yes that's a good point. It would be best to have a shop reset them. Detroit calls it an "Ash Accumulator". Cummins calls it DPF maintenance I believe. I'm sure every manufacturer has their own term for it. It literally only takes a minute to do.

Is there a alternative gasket to use when having to properly seat filters that have been installed improperly? Im going to try and readjust them since i see soot, but want to reuse rings since i just bought them. Is there hvac tape that can act as a new gasket?
@TheDieseler4 жыл бұрын
These filters see 1100 degrees. I wouldn't recommend using anything but the seals that are intended for them.

TheDieseler Is it okay to use little bit of dish soap? Don't you think it will remove soot easier?
@TheDieseler7 жыл бұрын
+Sergiy Vlasenko I wouldn't risk it. Mostly because it would find its way downstream into the SCR system. In reality though, both it and the DPF rely on chemical reaction to function properly. I wouldn't risk introducing anything like that into them just because of the slim chance it could interfere. There's also the chance it could harm NOX sensors. Cummins has even Incorporated a shield to protect the Outlet NOX sensor from getting soap on it when cleaning the truck.
