Encore_ss No, fountain pens write more smoothly and require no pressure to write, leading to less hand fatigue over hours of writing. Fountain pens can use the thousands of ink colours without being limited. The liquid ink stands out more on paper, and some have special properties like being waterproof, fade proof or fraud proof such as archival ink. Fountain pens can also give line variation through flex or stub nibs that allow of calligraphy to be done or for sketches such as Manga or even architectural designs, or just simple drawings. Seems to me that fountain pens are very different and not “pointless”. (The guy removed his comment but I’m keeping mine up in case anyone else had the same assumption)

Thank you for this! I accidentally stored two of my fountain pens when we decided to repaint my craft room (thought I'd lost them!) and when I unboxed them, the ink in the converters had evaporated and/or dried to the sides of the converter. Flushing the iroshizuku ink was as quick as shown but the Monteverde Noir ink took forever! I was really surprised at how clean the parts looked yet ink was still staining the water! I just checked my "clean" convertor that had the Noir ink in it. I'd left it to dry overnight, but when I moved the piston, more watery blue ink is still in there!! lol

Feed of Lamy Safari/Al-Star can actually be removed. It's just very difficult to be removed and you have to apply a lot of force and grip to pull the feed out. If you are determined to do that, remove the nib before pulling the feed out and make sure you look properly before you insert the feed back in. Ideally, don't pull the feed out that often because the friction might make the fitting between the feed and pen body looser. I usually flush my fountain pen or sometime I will put my pen in an ultrasonic cleaner to push out stubborn ink inside the feed.

Lamy pens have a removable pen nib. You can slide it of and even replace the nib. Put a small coin behing the writing part of the nib and pull the pen in the other direction. Be careful tough not to damage the pen or nib. Be careful with using tap water. Somtimes water from tap is very hard, containing chalk. You dont want this in the pen. Use distilled water instead. For pens beond salavage, mugged up with dried ink; use warm or even hot water.

I have a rose gold detailed one. Should I be worried about a patina or rust? Also should ya clean it when ya change inks? I had black in it previously and want to put in blue.
@JetPens4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the material of your pen, for example brass and copper fountain pens will darken and develop a unique pattern of patina. And yes, we recommend cleaning it when changing inks! This ensures that inks won't mix within the pen, which prevents muddy colors and the possibility of inks reacting to each other poorly.

5:03: "Some pens, like the Lamy Safari, do not have removable feeds". That's incorrect though. I remove the feed from my Lamy Safari every time I go to clean it out, and it comes out just fine. Slides back in with no issues either. My suggestion is to remove the nib first, then remove the feed afterwards (carefully though, it's fairly thin). It helps to make sure that the pen is dry before trying this. When putting it back in, remember to use the same orientation of the feed with respect to the section as when you pulled it out (flat side up) - unlike with most other pens, there's only one way that the feed and the section fit together. Usually removing the feed is only tough the first time around, so you'll need to be patient when trying it for the first time. I also recommend using a rubber grip the first time around. I remember using the rubber from an old table tennis bat that I no longer used - it worked like a charm.

I have a few old Parker 51 Specials (c. 1955 with aerometric fillers - these pens don't disassemble without much effort) that have been sitting for who knows how long with gunked ink in them. I squeezed clear water thru filler (and got some of ink out), soaked in clear water for 24 hours, squeezed water thru filler again and a little more ink came out. Still, the sac is totally black, and if I soak in water (30+ hours now) and squeeze sac, a little more ink comes out. I'm going to try the Monteverde Flush, but is there any other/better way to clean an aerometric filler Parker 51 Special?
