Tonight, on Restore & Replay: We should you how to clean a game disc using 3 different compounds.
Novus 2, Car Scratch Remover, and...... toothpaste.
While toothpaste isn't the best thing to use on a disc, or even in the top 10, it IS possible to use toothpaste to clean a disc, but there's a catch. We'll get into all of that.
As we continue to collect and document every cleaning method known in this galaxy, we will also be sure to make individual videos for each of these methods (for the archive).
TOOLS WE USED:
- Novus Step 2
- Meguiars ScratchX 2.0
- Crest Toothpaste
- Paper towels
I'm not expecting anyone to try the toothpaste method (it creates a bit of a mess), but understanding why toothpaste works will help folks to understand what can be used to resurface discs and why it works!

I am going to comment my experience. So i used the car scratch remover (the black bottle on the video) on my gamecube super smash brothers melee disc. I have to say i am very pleasantly surprised that it worked perfectly after applying. Before the treatment, the game would play but eventually would give an "error can't read disc". After application, the game played perfectly. I would like to thank the author of this video for helping me save one of my favorite game of my childhood you are my hero. And also for anyone that is wondering, i applied the scratch remover like in the video. I applied it a total of 2 times. It worked.

Glad you specified your level of annoyance with the credit card machine lol. The perfect scale for pressure. Really interested to see a video on removing one of those rental store full disk label things. Thought I was real clever and boogered up a copy of klonoa trying to remove one of those. Does novus expire? I've got an old bottle of GameStop disk skip fixer that I'll start using unless it's gone bad. Also, great videos! I've been looking for a reliable source for disk repair and sticker removal for a while and it's kinda hard to find.
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 2 жыл бұрын
Once I get down a better method for removing those big stickers on discs, I will absolutely make a video. The issue that folks can run into is that one wrong step will completely remove the disc label (which I suppose does get rid of the sticker too). Novus can expire, same with the GameStop Disc Skip Fixer (which I used to use that for years and years when I was being the counter), but it'll harden long before it expires, and even then its just a matter of drying out and having to resoak the compound. I think my Gamestop bottle is from 2008 or so, and still has some life left in it! I appreciate the kind words! I spent too many years putting stickers on cover arts, gotta repay my debt to society somehow!

I just started and I’m still trying to save costs. You’re right that the Seller shipping application is supremely unfriendly. I got used to it. I ship from Puerto Rico, which as a U.S. Territory, participates from the US Postal service. Amazon doesn’t seem to have negotiated rates with UPS here so I just use the large Flat Rate box of the USPS. I fit about 28 games in boxes in there. $19.90. I try to include titles that sell for sufficient that the cost of shipping doesn’t take more than 10% of earnings. That one’s a challenge. 😄

Fantastic! I'm going to do a few more plastic polish videos too, to show the pros and cons with different polishes outside of Novus. But its worth it to clean them yourself with a plastic polish, and if some still dont want to work, either run another round of Novus, or get them resurfaced! I turn on Netflix, grab a stack of discs and get scrubbing, I just make a lazy afternoon out of it!

@@RestoreAndReplay Nice! That'll be me this weekend. I did run into a problem with stickers being on a expensive manual. Not sure if you have any suggestions on that?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 2 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Morales Sorry for the text wall, but this is my usual process for more expensive manuals. (I also discuss this on the Gameye discord and this will get posted in the eventual cleaning subreddit) The key things to keep in mind are stabilizing the page, using as little heat as possible (especially with older manuals), and using soft plastic tools. This isn't something you want to pick at with your fingernails. We're talking expensive manuals here, so "just use a hairdryer and go slow" is not really an option (it also can wreck the paper depending on age) 1. Stabilize the page. This can mean having a bunch of heavy books holding it down, covering it in plastic wrap and taping that to a surface, or closing the other pages in a book. The idea here is that you don't want to have to worry about the manual moving while you're working on it, BUT you also want to make sure you don't accidentally tear the rest of the manual. In my video I hold down the cover-art using a heavy book, but with a manual that might not always work, depending on pages and size. 2. Inspect the sticker/s You're wanting to see if they are paper based or plastic based. If they are gamestop stickers (larger white squares) or EBGames stickers (smaller yellow squares), those are paper based and you can continue on. If they have a gloss to them or multiple colors, they're likely plastic based or laminated and will require a different step. 3. Identify a corner that can be lifted. This one should be straightforward, but find a corner that can be lifted, if possible. You can slightly roll the manual page to see if that will separate the corner from the page, but you want to find a weak spot on the sticker (again, don't use your fingernails, you will 100% indent the page). If you can't find any corners that will lift, that's fine too, we'll still start on a corner, but we'll start on the inner-most corner. So if the sticker is in the top right of the manual, we'll start with the bottom left corner of the sticker. 3.5 (If plastic or laminated sticker) Peel off the top layer of the sticker. You want to remove the top plastic/laminated layer of the sticker if possible. Again, don't risk anything, but try to see if you can remove the top portion. This should be fairly noticeable, just picture that you aren't going to remove the entire sticker, but the majority of it. If you have any doubts or concerns about getting just the top layer off, jump to step 4. 4. Load a qtip (cotton swab) with heptane. Yes, heptane. Heptane is used to remove adhesives from paper. Literally what it's best at. GooGone will soak the paper, IPA will discolor the paper, Heptane is used in the document restoration field for this exact situation. Apply heptane to that identified corner and using a lifting motion (I show this a lot in my videos), try to pry up one corner. Even if the heptane is applied to the top of the sticker, it'll work its way under the sticker, just give it a little time. KEY THING TO REMEMBER Even with heptane, you don't want to oversaturate the paper. So use as little as possible and be sure to dry the surface between applications. Remember, this removal is a discussion between you, the sticker, and heptane. You leave the paper out of this (by keeping it dry and happy). 5. Once a single corner is lifted, work on applying heptane to the underside of the sticker. You want the heptane to work on the stickers adhesive, so think more about applying the qtip (cotton swab) directly to the underside of the sticker and letting it do it's work from underneath. (Capillary action will allow the heptane to sneak under the sticker, don't worry) KEY OTHER THING TO REMEMBER Don't worry about residue at this step, we're looking to get the meat off the bone first, we'll come back to the residue afterwards. 6. Continue to apply heptane, and pull. As you continue to rub heptane on the underside of the sticker, get out your plastic peeler and slowly peel away the sticker. So you'll lift the sticker edge, apply a line of heptane, then (using your offhand) hold down the manual and slowly lift/peel using your other hand with the tool. The plastic tool will help the heptane separate the strands of the adhesive as you lift the sticker up. 7. Work slowly. Dry often. Reapply heptane as needed This isn't a race, you're trying to remove the sticker without having to pull on the sticker much at all. This is more of a feel thing and will require you to practice it a few times. It should work quickly once you understand how much heptane, pressure, prying, and pulling you need to do. But just take your time. The faster you go, the more likely it is that you'll get a tear. 8. Once the sticker is completely removed, pat dry the area Yes even if there is residue, you want to pat dry the area with a paper towel or tissue to make sure you don't have any residual heptane still working it's magic on the area. 9. When left with the residue, work on that separate. You're going to lightly soak a paper towel (not a microfiber cloth) with heptane, you can also use a qitp (cotton swab) for this step. You're going to focus on the residue here, dabbing a little bit of heptane onto the residue, and then removing the residue once it get's loose. This is where it can depend on the paper. Some manuals you can use painters tape and that'll help pull up the unstuck residue, and sometimes you just have to wipe it up. Another trick I've used is to put a line of painters tape away from the residue, and wipe the residue/heptane mixture towards the painters tape. You DON'T want to wipe the residue/heptane mixture along the manual pages, that'll just spread the stickiness. Again, use as little heptane as possible, and just do repeated steps. 10 If any residue remains, change the paper towel and clean it again. This is the big step, you have to make sure that each time you wipe, whether with a paper towel or qtip (cotton swab) that it's free of residue. It's basically a one-wipe situation. You don't want to reapply residue onto the paper, so each swipe will remove a little at a time. Just go slowly and the paper won't wrinkle or fade.

Nice video… so I have UFC3/PS4 that cuts out at %25 on the install on my PS5. I bought the game used. Now this would play %85 of the time on my original PS4 (Yes original release PS4 still works!) and I just got a PS5 and I’m installing all my games. I tried UFC 3 on the ps5 and I put it in backwards?!😮 So imagine my surprise… finally put it in the right way and no dice… it stops installing at %25? So I also installed Monster Energy Supercross 5 with no issues so it’s not the ps5. I tried light toothpaste… should I go circle strokes or inside to out? I also have Weiman’s silver/gold jewelry polish, could I use that?

Toothpaste and/or jewelery polish won't do much on bluray discs, I'll have a full video series for bluray in the near future. That sounds more like an install error. Have you checked the system storage for a partial UFC install? PS4/PS5 can get kinda dumb if they find a partial install file from a game you're trying to install.

@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 2 жыл бұрын
I'm actually not a fan of machine resurfacers, I explain why in a few of my videos. So I would suggest using neither! 😁. As for the mom and pop stores who still unfortunately use resurfacers, I am working on a much cheaper compound that most stores can make using store bought ingredients. Both manufacturers charge a small fortune for supplies, so if stores HAVE to use a machine, I want to find them a cheaper option. The solution in the center ring won't break the game immediately, but can cause problems in the future. As the two layers of polycarbonate in the center ring separate (because of the additional residue) it can expose the internals more than you'd want. Plus it weakens the structure of the center ring if those two rings aren't flat against each other.

How many times can one resurface a pressed disc in its lifetime? What about burned discs should I even bother?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay 9 ай бұрын
I am going to say a really scary number. So don't freak out. A disc can be resurfaced (on average) 3-5 times using a machine before it is toast. Hand-resurfacing? You're looking closer to 8-10 times. But that can really depend on the overall thickness of the disc. Burned discs are almost always a CD-R/RW, which means looooowish quality. So resurfacing those you're looking at 3 or less times. But... I mean if it's a burnt disc... make another. hah!

Well remember that you can do the process a number of times! The next handful of videos shows me having to make multiple passes with novus. The idea is that you're removing enough layers to reduce down the scratch (think of the scratch as a little valley on the surface of the disc). So one swipe might not work right away, I've had discs that take 10-15 tries, heck I've had discs that take 20+. It's all dependent on the depth of the scratch and how much material you need to remove with each try. Don't give up! I have some insanely scratched discs that I've brought back to life!

The big thing is to keep the discs clean and out of direct sunlight. Finger oils should be wiped off from the discs, as soon as possible. Try to maintain a 68-72° F, with 40-50% relative humidity space if possible. But honestly the biggest thing to do is just check on the games regularly, inspect the manuals and wipe everything down as soon as you notice anything. That whole rant about poor disc resurfacer handling really reminded me of when I was a kid, where our copy of Dark Cloud 2 didn't work, so we sent it to this old video store near us (no longer in business unfortunately. Covid tanked 'em.) and when it came back, the disc was still screwed. I've actually been looking around for ways to fix scratches. I had heard of these methods, but I think this is prob the most comprehensive video i've seen on how the methods actually work. I've heard that car polish can also be used to get rid of scratches, and have been considering that. But I may see about inquiring about car scratch remover instead when I go buy the stuff I need. (got a couple Wii games and a PS1 game that don't work.)
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay Жыл бұрын
Maaaaaan. Dark Cloud was fantastic. How do we not have remakes of those. Ok so yeah, disc resurfacers are a mixed bag. Some stores don't properly train their folks on how to use them, so they can occasionally ruin a disc and make it so you can't find out how Max and Monica defeat evil! Car polish "can" work, but there are a few kinds of car polish. Some with and some without wax. "Most" will have a wax in them, which won't work on game discs as it'll leave a film and end up filling more scratches than it's worth. But if you're someplace they're selling car wax, chances are they have a car scratch remover nearby as well. Nu-finish, Meiguars, Turtle, they all make a scratch remover (wax free) that will work just fine on discs!

I have yet to have much success with toothpaste and/or vaseline on a bluray, so I can't help you there. Bluray discs have a protective layer called Durabis, which is pretty strong stuff. Absolutely! Start off by putting masking tape on the top of the disc covering the scratches, and try to run the disc. If it works, you know that those scratches will just need to be filled. You can use marker the same color as the label and fill in those scratches. You can also just leave the tape on the disc if the pieces are small enough!

Thanks for the video, I had no idea discs could be saved, and would throw out old discs I found secondhand. (All my own OG copies are pristine but buying used is a lottery lol)

Absolutely they can be saved! Out of the thousands of discs I've worked with, only about 2% are lost causes. Usually from excessive heat or massive damage. Every game deserves at least an attempt to fix! Glad I could help!

I cannot being to tell you the amount of hours I put into the OG Operation Flashpoint. And when Dragon Rising came out I dumped an equal amount of hours into it. I dunno what it is about that series...

Should I also buy novus step 1 and use it after step 2? or is it at all necessary?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay Жыл бұрын
You can start with just Step 2, that's all you'll need for disc resurfacing and cleaning. But Step 1 has it's own uses!! I'm going to make a whole video on Step 1! But the short version is that I use it to shine and protect consoles! I use it similarly to ArmorAll. It also helps when used on games and consoles to help resist dust and fingerprints! (but it only lasts a few weeks!)

Is the protective layer of step 1 harmful on discs?
@RestoreAndReplay
@RestoreAndReplay Жыл бұрын
@@SilentS0lid Nope! Not harmful at all! It doesn't last long enough to do much damage anyway. Just puts a nice thin sheen and coat onto the disc that lasts a week or so!

@@RestoreAndReplay Thanks for replying. I have a few other questions if you have the time to help. I've decided to buy a bottle of novus 2 and try to fix some of my games. Before I do that I need to remove some residue on the black side of a few ps1 discs. I have some Isopropyl alcohol 90%+ and am wondering if that is safe to use? Or would you recommend something else? I also have some WD-40 which I've seen people use on jewel cases, (Goo Gone is not available here in Sweden) but I'm not sure if It's safe to use on discs.

@RestoreAndReplay Жыл бұрын
@@SilentS0lid I'm actually in the process of uploading a video where I clean off the data side of a disc with Isopropyl alcohol! So that'll work fine! I am not the biggest fan of using WD40, it can eat polycarbonate. (Says so on their MSDS too, to not use it on plastics)

I agree with your methods, however, I would like to suggest using a 3M wetodry sanding sponge (for applying even pressure) when buffing and polishing. Also, start off with the least aggressive compound (toothpaste) and then check on your system. Some debate over whether to buff in circles or inside to outside linear motion, personally, I haven't found any difference in either method.

I have a whole series on sanding sponges, don't you worry! For these early videos, I'm just showing how people can fix games with local stuff. But we'll get into a whole slew of 3M sanding things too! As for the scratches, technically speaking you'd want to polish opposite the scratch, not parallel, but it really also depends on how the scratch is formed and curved and all this.

Knock on wood, I have a PS2 Metal Gear Solid disc that worked just fine way back when I had my PS2 fat new. That machine got stolen back about 8 years ago. I wanted to give my old games to my grandson, so I bought a PS2 slim off eBay. I started playing this particular game to give the old slim a test and about 20 minutes in, it stopped reading or something and flashed a little disc and question mark, letting me know something was wrong. I prayed, it was the disk not the player. So I looked really good at the disc and it looked pristine. But I washed it with warm dish soapy water and rinsed, dried, buffed and tried it again. Same results. I assumed it was the player, so I tried another game. Went through an hour and a half of play, no problem at all. So I took the non play disc and a small bit of toothpaste, thumb only, went around and around about 10 times very lightly, adding water to thin the paste as i went around it about 20 more times lightly. I rinsed it thoroughly and made sure 0 moisture left. I buffed it with a fresh clean old cotton t-shirt. And marvelously it worked better than it was before. It read the disc faster and played well past the point where it stopped over and over before. A professional car detailer showed me how to buff cars. And thinning the compound with a little clean water produced a finer and finer polish. The only thing I don't like about microfiber is, it doesn't work well wet. Slightly damp, great. Like cleaning eye glasses. Always breathe a bit of breath on them before buffing. A good clean old cotton t shirt works great. No scratches if it's clean .

You got it! So I actually use a ton of microfiber towels when I do color correction on cars, but I tend to finish with a tshirt, it really just depends on how the surface is, the temp, and how much compound I've been using. I'm glad to hear you got the game running again! MGS is such a fantastic series.

Depends on what the problem is, but most likely! You can resurface Bluray discs, but it's a little trickier!
