How to Clean a K&N Home Air Filter

Is there an alternative to K & N filter cleaner like using regular dish soap with water or something else?

Yes you can, use a little bit of dish soap with water and spray it on for a little bit and rinse it off.

If you're using the K&N HVAC Washable Furnace Air Filter, you can use the Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner spray. It's about $4 and works the same as the K&N solution. If you can't find the spray, get the gallon ($10-11) and make sure to dilute it in a spray bottle 1:10 with distilled water. That means that if you get the typical refillable spray bottles, they are commonly 32 ounces. You will need 3.2 ounces of Simple Green and the rest water. Long-term, using the gallon cleaner, this reduces your cost. You can ensure you're cleaning effectively without being too harsh on your filter. Vinegar, dish soap and other DIY methods are too harsh on the cotton fiber of the filter. INSTRUCTIONS: - Vacuum filter with brush attachment or lightly shake off loose debris. You want to vacuum the side that has the metal mesh. - Gently wet both sides of filter. This will make sure the cleaning solution doesn't dry on the filter during hotter months. - Wet both sides with Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner (ready-made spray) or 1:10 diluted Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner DIY spray. - Wait 5-10 minutes depending on how heavily soiled the filter is. If you clean your filter monthly, which is recommended for HVAC performance, then you only need to wait 5 min each time. - Rinse the filter from clean side to dirty side. This means from the back of the filter without the metal mesh. The metal mesh side should be down as you water from the top. - Allow the filter to air dry fully in a shaded, well-ventilated area before reinstalling. In the meantime, as it can take 1-3 days depending on the weather, you can have a simple store filter installed as you wait. I tend to reuse the same store bought filter yearly, replacing it at the end of the year, because it's only used for the time the filter dries. Then, I store the temporary filter with a bag so it doesn't gather more dust and dirt. Hope that helps.
