Thanks, I just bought a scooter with two, older helmets. They were well kept and I will eventually get a new one, but for now and for the occasional passenger, I now know how to spruce them up. They're in great shape but they have a lingering smell that should be easily eliminated with your process.

@jack.colbert "Helmet face shields are made of polycarbonate. Ideally, a face shield should only be cleaned by placing a very warm rag over the shield and allowing it to sit for a few minutes. This is the recommendation of some of the top premium helmet brands. If this is not possible, an agent designed for cleaning polycarbonate eyewear like Oakley’s eyecare kit can be used. I have a 2012 ls2 helmet it’s very old obviously and I’ve cleaned the padding that is removable but don’t know how to clean certain parts of it that I cannot take off and I can’t just throw it into water and clean it since it also has styrofoam inside of it Any advice? Also the chin strap is quite damaged and rusted

What about mold? My helmet was stored in the garuage. I can remove the inside liner but not the straps. Im also concerned if mold grew in areas I can't see.

Hi Jaffrum, so are you saying woolite in warm water is ok to submerge a helmet in? I,ve got a matt shoei without a removable centre liner, darn it. Also woolite comes as woolite everyday, darks and delicates. Does it matter which one or all three ok? Thanks V much. My lid sure needs a good soak.

Very good video, easy to follow and listen to. Unfortunately the one thing i wanted to see and learn you kinda skipped. I wanted to see how to clean a matt finished helmet. You had the helmet on the table but only show how to clean the internal part. Keep up the good work and i hope see you do a how to clean a matt finished motorcycle helmet. :-)

Is the face shield ok to use with the woolite? Like could you submerge the entire helmet in it, wash and then air dry? or even could you do that with the shield off and then submerge it or is there to many parts in a full helmet that may get damaged? Also i am one who does prefer to just skip chemicals altogether could i just wash my helmet with a warm damp rag always? Would i have to do it more often than other people who would use cleaning agents?

I cleaned my helmet with water, i put a little bit of car wax on the visor if i know its going to rain. Inside pads i washed. I do need some freshner for the inside though its starting to stink even after washing it :b thanks for the info.

Ive got a (mostly white but got some black and red) HJC helmet with an anti fog visor. How would i go about cleaning the shell? HJC recommends "cleaning your helmet with products designed for automotive cleaning and polishing. All HJC helmets are finished with an automotive type base coat/clear coat finish." Would someone be able to explain this to me in dummy form or link me a product I can use. I'd like the clean the outside shell, I don't wanna ruin anything though. Thanksv

I think every month should be good,i don't like to wait for the helmet to start smelling,i would like to know if there will be any problem for washing it frequently,well i think with the spray there will be no problem,what do you think?

As long as no harsh cleaners are used i think you will be fine. I ride motocross, so I clean when it is stinky (every ride or at least once a month.) I use water only no detergent or anything. Works great for me. Bugs and such may require some cleaner agent. Try using a spray after cleaning. This will make next cleaning sessions easier.

By Spay I meant a polish of some sort, It gives a film on the helmet and make everything wipe off easier.

That was done very well, What if you have glue from a sticker stuck on the face shield, warm water did nothing to help remove it. Its stuck good!

Thanks for your question. It looks like a gentle product, but I can't say for sure if it will be safe on helmet shields. It might work fine, but the product was designed for use on glass, and without speaking with the manufacturer, there is no way to be sure it is safe for use on polycarbonate.

Warm water and a rag is probably the best for the shell as long as the end result is a clean helmet. For the liner, water alone may not be enough if the helmet has been sweat in significantly. A very light detergent will break down the salt and restore the liners ability to absorb moisture. Thanks for watching!

I once had a customer that went touring in some remote areas that had no electricity. He cleaned his helmet liner in a river and dried it in a sack of rice. I said I thought that sounded a bit unsanitary. He just laughed and said something about sanitation being relative.

You definitely want to sanitize that liner. The bad odor is usually from mildew or mold. Dangerous mold usually only forms on cellulose materials like drywall but you still don't want fungus on your face. Hot water and a light detergent will take care of it.

23pyromaniac I would not recommend. The left over residue can cause a reaction while wearing the helmet. It would be a mild rash if it happened. If you do, just make sure it is rinsed thoroughly to minimize any soap residue left over.
