Please note, my ENTIRE experience with cleaning a sea urchin is just this one time... and this was my honest first attempt. Thanks for watching this madness... it somehow turned out ok?? I'M SHOCKED!! Thanks for watching, I hope it wasn't too gross?

Oh nooooooo… hey, it was a great experiment and at least you were able to glue it back together! 👏🏼 And I got to see Ninja!!! 😻😻😻 Love that! Thanks for the informative video. I’d love to see more of your shells cleaned up. We need another look at your display too! 🥰🥰🥰

G'day Pam 👋🏻💖 "Oh noooooo" pretty much summed up my feelings in that moment 🤣 and yeah, it all turned out great (well, acceptable) in the end; it could have been a lot worse, that's for sure!!! Hehe, Ninja got a cameo at the same time you asked about her the other day: it's like you knew something was happening from half a world away 😺 Thank you so much for coming along on a different kind of journey today; I'll be back to shelling next time 🏖️🐚 Ohh, and the cabinet...it's in a perpetual state of disorganization 😅 one day, one day... Once again Pam, thank you so much for watching 🥰

Hi! I know this is very late, but I've been catching up on your episodes (love them) and just watched this. My experience with cleaning urchins and sand dollars is to let them soak in hydrogen peroxide rather than bleach. This disinfects and cleans them without making them quite as brittle. I too paint them with a solution of 1/2 glue and 1/2 water after they have been cleaned and dried. Works for me so far. I'm learning so much from your episodes. I'm hoping to visit Australia in September and October and do some shelling along the southern Queensland coast and then visit my son in Melbourne. I'm an American living in land-locked Austria, so it's very special for me to get to the ocean. I have a sister living on the southwest coast of Florida, so I do shelling there when I visit her. Your videos help me survive between my shelling trips to one ocean or another. Thanks for your efforts! Your fan Jan (coming from my hubby's account).

G'day Jan 👋🏻🐚 Likewise, I am also very late in replying! When someone takes the time to give me such a lovely large comment; I like to also take the time to respond properly too...this week hasn't had the right time 😂 You know, I think you are the second or third person to tell me about using hydrogen peroxide on a sea urchin... I think the writing is on the wall; I need to get some hydrogen peroxide! I do wonder though; would the hydrogen peroxide have changed the colour of the urchin as much as the bleach did? I do like the super white colour that this sputnik sea urchin became, even if it's less natural looking. This one also got about the same amount of water/glue all over it after I bleached it as well. Oh wow, living over in the USA with a chance to go shelling in Florida! What a dream!! Also, not to spoil anything too much in a future video, but I recently recieved sea shells from some of the beaches near Melbourne! I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely shells that can be found around there. Be sure to spend some time shelling around Phillip Island because I think you will find cowries there in much larger quantities than other places around it. Have a wonderful adventure, and thank you so much for watching mine 🥰

G'day Trudy 👋🏻💖 It was a bit of an adventure in itself; the ups and downs of cleaning it felt like a journey to eventually bring out it's best side. Phew, and yeah, I'm glad the glue worked, and that it turned out to look pretty cool 😎 Thank you so much for coming along to watch this one; it's pretty different than the usual video! I'll be back to shelling next time though! Thank you again for watching 🥰 from me and Ninja 😺

G'day Alison 👋🏻💖 Oh phew, I'm glad you liked it 🤩 it's such a different video than usual! For me, it was a lot of fun to see it transform from zero to hero like this; though some people do prefer to leave the sea urchins intact with spikes and all. Yep, shhh, the glue is our little secret 🤫 Hehe, yep, Ninja was su-purrr-vising the whole ordeal 🤣😺 Again, thank you so much for watching a different type of video today 🙏🥰

Hey Maddie 👋🏻 I’m so glad you came back to the urchin to show us! It’s is such a great color. I almost lost it when it came apart. I bet you did too. But super glue to the rescue. And saving the teeth is not weird at all. Thanks for the science experiment.

G'day Melisa 👋🏻💖 I thought about just making the video for Facebook, but I thought more people might enjoy seeing it here, and it might even be helpful (or not helpful 😅) for being trying something similar! Hahaha, ahhh, I almost lost it... but then I just remembered to not sweat the small stuff, and what's done is done... I might have been a lot more upset if I put more time and effort into prepping it, but it wasn't too bad after it dried out, actually 😲 super glue and PVA glue really did fix it all up in the end though 🤣 I thought about gluing the teeth back together too, but I think this is fine. Thank you so, so much for watching something so different today. I really did stumble through this clean up, but that kind of its own adventure too. Thanks again for watching 🥰

Good afternoon, Maddie Wow, what a really big difference. Love the white and purplish color. It may have broken, but you did a great job putting it back together. The inter working of the sea urchin is very cool. It is always so cool to see the different things you show us. Thank you for that. I hope you have a wonderful day. Until the next video. Maddie have a great week.

Thank you for watching something so different today; I know it's not really the usual shelling videos that you enjoy seeing 🐚 but I will have a fun one for you next time 🏖️ Thank you so much for watching this one, and I hope you have an easier weekend this time 🥰

Hi Maddie. I use oxyclean. It is less caustic. I clean mine if I can at the beach. If not I crush the spines in the toilet. Take a old pair of manicure scissors and scape all the rest of spines off and a toothbrush to brush all the dirt off. I gut in the toilet and when guts are gone take a old toothbrush and scrub all the fleshy pieces out , I have also in the end take my fingered to make sure it is all gone.
@SandCoffeeRocks
@SandCoffeeRocks Жыл бұрын
G'day Jan 👋🏻💖 What's this, the guts go down the toilet?!! Well, that's one way to deal with them!! I was just going to put it in the bin it garden 🤣 Oxyclean, I will remember that for next time, I definitely need a gentler solution for when I find another one. You sound like you've got a lot of experience with cleaning sea urchins, I think maybe you should do a tutorial video; it would be a lot more helpful than mine, I think 🤣 Hmmm, for my little urchin, I'm not sure I would have gotten a toothbrush into the small opening on this one to clean it, but I think other types have larger opening. Again, that's something I'll remember for next time! Thank you so much for watching such a different type of video this time, I really appreciate it and the advice you've given me 🙏 Thank you again from me and Ninja 😺🥰

I found some fossil sea urchin teeth and it took me forever to figure out what they were. I'm glad you kept the teeth. I was disappointed that you didn't keep the large spines, but I guess you find them on the beach all the time. I would like to know what kind of urchin that is. My dad found one on a beach in Mexico, I guess it's about time I tried to identify it. I know it won't be the same species as yours but it will be interesting to know what species each of them are.

G'day Cathy 👋🏻💖 Oh wow, fossil sea urchin teeth of all things; what a fascinating thing to find 😲 I thought about keeping the spines on mine too, but they were a little crusty... somehow, they didn't look that good to me 😅 Yes, there are sometimes cleaner and nicer spines to be found at the beach, but not too many, actually. This sea urchin in particular is a Sputnik Sea Urchin (Phyllacanthus imperialis) I believe. I didn't know for sure until I got it all cleaned up.
