How to Clean a Yoyo Bearing - Paper Cleaning Method

The paper cleaning method for cleaning yoyo bearings.

Learn to clean a yoyo bearing with lighter fluid and then get it extra clean with the paper cleaning method.
What you need: A glass dish, a solvent (we use lighter fluid), a pin, the bearing you wish to clean, a pencil, a piece of paper towel, a piece of paper, scissors.
Step 1: Remove the bearing shields. Press the pin into the c-clip on the bearing to remove it. Once the c-clip is removed the shields will fall off. (After cleaning, the shields do not need to be put back on the bearing.)
Step 2: Put the bearing into the glass dish and put in enough solvent to cover the bearing.
Step 3: Give the glass container a little shake to move the solvent around, then wait five to fifteen minutes.
Step 4: Remove the bearing from the solvent (you can use the pencil), and let it sit to dry on the paper towel for about 10 minutes.
Step 5: Once the bearing is dry, put the bearing on the tip of the pencil and spin it with your finger. If the spin is smooth, pat yourself on the back, you're finished! If not, repeat all the prior steps. If the bearing still does not spin smooth proceed to step 6.
Step 6: Cut off the corner of the piece of paper to make a triangle about 1.5" long and 3/4" wide. Fold the paper in half.
Step 7: With your bearing on the end of the pencil, thread the thin end of the paper between the balls of the bearing while touching the outer race of the bearing. The paper should poke through to the other side.
Step 8: Pinch the bearing and rotate the pencil 10-20 times.
Step 9: Remove paper and check for black on the edges.
Step 10: Repeat steps 6-9 until no black gunk appears on the paper.
Step 11: Once the bearing is spinning well, lube the bearing with thin yoyo lube.
Step 12: Rejoice, you are done!

shake it in a pill jar works much better. And you don't get all the fumes. I just put 3/4 mineral spirits 1/4 three in one oil. I use that as my cleaner and lube. good video though just saying my method.

There is no point in lubing the bearing before cleaning it, because the cleaning will just remove the lube. That being said, no, nothing bad will happen.

If you have pliers put the bearing in the circle part so that it stays in place. Makes it much easier, as the bearing doesnt spin when you try to deshield it.

+Gunslinger Syayo If you lube the oracle and put on a new string you should be able to get several thousand loops before you will need to lube the yoyo again or restring it. It is not a high-maintenance yoyo.

My responsive yoyo began to only sleep for a few seconds, so I cleaned it using the first method in the video, and now it spins great! However, my yoyo isn't (reliably) responsive anymore. I'm 90% certain it's because I haven't lubed it (I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail), but I want to confirm my suspicions. Thoughts? Also, I think it's great that you reply to all the comments. Not all youtubers with channels your size can keep up with this many!

In my opinion, paper clean is the best, if you clean more than 20 times with paper. Believe me its better, faster and it spins longer and its safer. Works well with over lube bearing, or if it gets dirty(like black gunk). Only use acetone or spirit, if it gets too much dirty (like if you drop on dirt or sand) or got rust. If its minor problem then paper is the best.

I have this smaller-than-C bearing that has this black-ish corrosion on the outside. I've soaked it in metal polish (white spirits) for more than half an hour and there is very little, if any, improvement. How do I fix this? Does it even affect play if the corrosion is on the outside ring?

+SolaceAndBane Most likely if you see that corrosion, then the inside of the bearing is corroded as well. That being said, if the yoyo plays fine I would not worry about it.

So in my experience, for the lighter fluid method, you have to play with the yoyo for a bit after you clean it. Also make sure to lube it

+Joseph Lacy There is no easy way to remove a bearing without a multitool that does not have great potential to scratch your yoyo or damage the bearing. You can try to gently rock the bearing off with pliers, but it may end up damaging the bearing or the yoyo.

Joseph Lacy One thing I have found that helps prevent damage while using pliers to remove a bearing is to wrap a strip of paper towel around the exposed bearing quite a few times to create a pad. This still allows me to get a decent grip on the bearing with the pliers without (as much) risk to the bearing. Still not as good as the mutlitool but so far I have found it effective.

Noise in bearings is not really the issue, the real question is if it is playing unresponsive or not.

Usually that indicates that it is time to lube it again. If you tried that and it didn't help, try a little more. If that doesn't help, or if it makes things works, then clean it.

I know its normal for the bearing to get that black gunk stuff, but is it normal for it to get the yoyo spacers? On my Skyhawks, they are just covered with that stuff, the spacers I mean. Do you know how to get rid of that by any chance?

Tommy Behney That black gunk is the lube that came in the bearing (I believe), so it makes sense that it leaches out onto the spacers. If you continue to lube the bearing with thin yoyo lube eventually this will stop leaching out of the bearing. It should just wipe off.

If you bearing is not staying perfectly unresponsive when you lube it that means you are putting it too much lube. However, if you are using our lube all you need to do is throw it very hard a few times and let it spin out when you are doing tricks and it will become unresponsive again.

I have a few question regarding yoyo. first, I'm very impressed with The Sage yoyo & it play really smooth but after a few play, I noticed the sage yoyo regularly became unresponsive, it doesn't matter if I clean it or lube it even 2 drops on bearing. a few play on one day, on one day I just pratice to do roller coaster. it became unresponsive so quickly man.what happen actually? it make me feels no in good mood to play man.

+Gunslinger Syayo If you would like to be able to lube the Sage less often and still have it play perfectly responsive I suggest you try using thicker string. What should I do if my unresponsive yoyo (Winter solstice) is starting to respond when being pulled up? I've only had it for a week or 2 and I can't get my grinds going because whenever I pull it up to my hand to grind, the string just begins to wind up the yoyo/snag without me doing a bind. This only starting happening about 5 days ago and It's really frustrating and I've tried switching strings and cleaning/lubing my bearing but it just made it worse. It's too responsive is my point. What I have found is most sponsored players do not lube their bearings since they get them for free, so it doesn't really matter if they last a long time or not. We recommend cleaning, playing with the clean bearing for 30-60 minutes, then lubing.

This is a public service anouncement. I hope that Yotricks will update this video, because it's worng about using lighter fluid. This needs to change in the Yoyo community. USE 100% acetone! Don't use lighter fluid, and Don't use carb cleaner!!! I've done the research, and talked to a friend that has a master's degree in Biology (with a good understanding of chemistry.) Pure Acetone is the safest of these options, the human body can actually break down small amounts of acetone with no ill effects. It is easy to dispose of, pour a small amount on concrete and it evaporates. Lighter Fluid is too expensive and not water-soluable, and is highly toxic to the body and needs to be disposed of properly, DO NOT POUR IT DOWN THE DRAIN! And don't use carb cleaner FFS! It's worse than Lighter fluid, and its carcinogenic. Both lighter fluid and carb cleaner are extremely bad for the environment, and they are both very unhealthy for the human body to be exposed to. And while you shouldn't be drinking bottles of acetone, the body can handle and break this chemical down. Acetone, is also the cheapest of all the options and is readily available at any drug store or hardware store. If anyone has a background in science, please chime in and let me know if this is correct.

I mistakenly did this because i couldn't find the right yoyo lube and tried finding alternative solution from internet and saw one that says its ok to use sewing machine lube as an alternative and i use that solution and my yoyo became responsive even with few drops. should i clean with acetone or something else or will it be fine again if use the right yoyo lube, i ordered few days ago, its on stock again.

Adding more lube will never work, it will only make it more and more responsive. You will need to clean your bearing and then make sure it is totally dry then lube it with a tiny amount of thin yoyo lube.

Why few drops? That’s probably why it became responsive. You just need to use a small drop.

I guess once you get the C rings and shield off you cannot put it back in right? Does that mean it will get stuff stuck inside of it now ?

+Darkmage40 You are correct, it is so difficult to get the shields back on it is not worth the effort. Also, with the shields off the bearings are more prone to get dirt and particles on the inside.

Which sleeps longer with a CenterTrac bearing, the Yomega Dash, or the Dv888? Also does the Dash grind well?

Crackinskullz I'm a Randy The Dash grinds ok, but not nearly as well as the DV888. I believe sleep times on the two yoyos would be very similar.

my bearing is clean. but when i throw the yoyo and put my finger on it it makes alot of vibration but after about 1second of my finger touching the yoyo, it slows down a little bit and the yoyo feels almost dead smooth. is that problem my throw? or something to do with the yoyo sometimes when i throw the yoyo its completely smooth with out touching it

a throwrevolution zephyr, its a 50$ mono metal 6061 aluminum stainles steel 10mm axle with a crucial grooved v2 bearing. it was like this when i got it new and no it was not used

That is completely normal. it usually goes smooth after u land it on 2 strings or so after throwing it
