Remember to clean the residual off with dry swab after you have used cleaning solvent . It usually leaves a film which is not good. In normal situation you don't need to use any cleaning solvent but if the player has been in cigarette smoke, it may leave very bad film and also destroys bearings. I know because I am VTR (video tape recorder) maintenance engineer.

I have a 9-year old Onkyo AM/FM stereo CD player and this is really the only way to clean that lens inside because of that issue regarding the front-loading tray. If done properly like the woman describes in this upload, you only need to do it once a year (or every 10 months if you live in a "dust-friendly" household like I do unfortunately). Saved me a lot of headaches knowing it wasn't my CDs that were defective (even the near-mint condition ones I had were skipping, lol). Eventually I'll replace the one I already have since its design has already been made obsolete, but damn it's still been one of my best purchases to date. :-)

OUCH ...!!! Cotton swab on a Laser Lens ? Micro Fiber cloth with a bit off soft screen cleaner on it works best !! Just put the micro fiber cloth around one finger & very gently with very little to no pressure, wipe the Laser Lens !! DEv

This is for an old dvd player that is not worth having professionally repaired. It also has no warranty. I've done this with xbox's and have brought them back to life. I'd use a nitrogen blower as well. Also he did it, he had his daughter as a fun example of how easy it is.

Do not use oil - use isopropyl alcohol (also called rubbing alcohol) or maybe a lens cleaning solution.

Step 5: "Unplug the device." Step 8 "Be careful not to look into the lens." Okay...But since none of the steps from 5 to 8 was "Plug the device back in and switch it on", I'm not really sure why I'm trying to do this with my eyes closed.
