Good tips, BUT: Expiration dates on canned / non-perishable food items are generally a guideline, put by manufacturers because they have to by the government. A can of tomatoes will be good a year, maybe even two, past its BB date. Please don't throw out all of your cans just because they're a month or two past what they say. It's wasteful and contributes to methane emissions from landfills.

I read somewhere (wish I could find it) that canned goods, if not acidic, can last up to 7 yrs past the date. Acidic canned goods are shorter. This is, of course, as long as the cans are in perfect shape (no bulges, or deep dents).

That is why there is so much food waste because people don't understand about the "best before date", they think the food is no good anymore instead of the food has lost a bit of flavor but it is eatable .

If you do not want the food that is past it’s “best by” date, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE donate!!!!!! I volunteer at a food bank and we have FDA guidelines posted for just this purpose - to determine what is actually expired vs best sold by. We sort through all donations - including from super markets -and are able to distribute the majority of donated items. Various items “expire” at days, weeks, months and even years after the best by date so this is an option for donating, it is NOT rude 😃

@@marsfran55 thank you!!! I learned something else about donating to food banks. We used to get $75 bonuses at work. I’d buy cases of tuna to give to the local food pantry. I learned they’d rather have the $75, as they can stretch that further with their food discounts than I can at my local Krogers.

I had a bunch of cookbooks taking up space in my kitchen. Most of those only had a handful of recipes in each that I actually used. But I kept them because there were other recipes in there I told myself that one day I would make. So over a bit of time I went through each of them page by page. Every recipe I actually used and the others I told myself I'd get to one day I took pictures of. I also took a picture of the front of the cookbook and the copyright info so that IF I ever decided I really needed to get that cookbook again I'd know what to look for. By doing that I got rid of the excuses I'd been using to hold onto them. Then I donated all those cookbooks. You won't be surprised to know that I've never felt the need to go repurchase any of those cookbooks and over time I also got rid of most of the pics of recipes I told myself I might make one day.

Have always done FIFO not only for groceries but also when I empty the dishwasher I put those plates at the bottom of the pile and the ones already in the cupboard at the top. That way the items wear equally. Being British we love baked beans and fhey are a staple item in most British cupboards.

We do eat baked beans in the US but for my family it’s usually at cook outs 😁 We do eat Mac and cheese sometimes especially when we were ALWAYS on the go with sports and dance. But now that things are not as hectic and we have more time to prepare meals at home we have started eating healthier and avoid boxed and canned foods as much as possible.

We have a really small kitchen, so something that worked for me is having a rule of 'this must always go here, or on the table, so it doesnt get lost / put away, and then goes bad. And be honest with yourself on what you actually use. For those of us in small spaces, I do recommend only having 'one' of something, unless you reall love it - for example, we only have basmati rice, we only keep one, maybe two kinds of dry pasta, we buy cereals we know we would go through. Best of luck everyone :)

I have SIGNIFICANTLY downsized twice. One coping solution has been to add extra shelves in the cabinets. My current kitchen is woefully lacking in drawers, so I am still figuring out where to put things. One solution is that I bought a wall cabinet and plan to add wheels to the bottom and a butcher block top to use as an island that can be pushed out of the way as necessary. I doubled my pantry by building shelves in the laundry room, including behind the door. My foyer is the size of a large bedroom, so bookshelves line the walls. Kitchen, dining and living rooms are open with high ceilings, so it feels spacious. No basement means one bedroom becomes the storeroom I need until items are consumed or given away because they are not needed. (I am giving up on the idea of visitors, so many items saved for company will soon go.)

I clean my kitchen cabinets once a year in Spring time with bleach mixed with water. That works great for me... The top problem is the dish machine! and also the cloth wash machine if its in your kitchen,!!! It really wash dishes withouth spending lots of water, save the planet! The main issue is that the dish machine and the cloth wash machine is they spreads lots of steam into your kitchen that would get into yr cabinets! Use an dehumidifier. Open all windowns ... but that will never be enough! Bc we tend to remove dishes without even being dry. And we try to dry it with cloths!! wrong! More fungus and mold into cabinets!! Thanks @cleanmyspace for the awsome teachings!

It's been said you can keep canned food for up to two years after the expiration date. Cans are required by law to bear an expiration date and the sooner, the better because product manufacturers theoretically make more profit if you throw things out earlier and thus have to buy more. It's worth a check before disposing of.

When I cleaned out my upper pantry, I threw out Instant pudding dated 2012. As for my cupboards, the original kitchen was built as a r ental by a short person (5 feet tall) we were 6 feet tall at least. So, when we started planning our new kitchen, if we were at someone's house and liked one of their features, I would ask what it was called and add it to my notepad. There are 2 roll-out cupboards and a skinny cupboard with a skinny drawer and a number of other things, making the most use of the space we had in our "budget." My other advice is when you are discussing new appliances, DO NOT do that in the kitchen. The stove, oven, and fridge can hear you, and they will quit working. Finally, my 2 year old was worried about all these changes and refused to take a nap after all this. So, take that into account when assuming this challenge. Don't worry, she's okay and trying to have children of her own.

Canned goods will last years beyond their expiration dates. Those dates are "best by" or "use by". Basically all that happens past that date is the food starts to break down. But all in all, you can keep canned goods almost indefinitely.

Canned goods, providing the can is not (badly) dented, bulging, damaged or leaking, are fit to eat for years. Different date types are used on canned, perishables, non food items, etc. However they literally mean what they say, so it's useful to know the differences. "BEST BEFORE" = > taste or texture may degrade after that date but product is safe to consume. The product is BEST before that date. "SELL BY" => stores cannot SELL this product after the date. It's still fine to consume. Usually a "SELL BY" will also have a "USE BY" date too. "USE BY" or "EXPIRY" => product taste, safety or efficacy is not guaranteed and you should not consume these past that date. Obviously things don't magically go bad at the stroke of midnight; if you have a perishable item with a "USE BY" from the day before, use your better judgement!

Expiration dates do not matter! Especially with unopened canned goods. Ignore the dates.
