Thanks for the video, probably the best I've seen. I have a Johnson that appears to be the same and it's been running in limp mode so I think the carbys are gummed up as it hasn't been used much or serviced in 20+ years. Are there any oil filters or anything on this or do I just drain the lower part of the engine?
@buschfishin
@buschfishin 2 жыл бұрын
if you have the same motor this was before they were oil injected so it’s all premix and there’s no oil filter, you might have a fuel filter in line somewhere but if your motor has limp mode it’s going to be a newer model, the oil injected versions have an oil filter in-line with the main oil feed line. otherwise the only oil you need to worry about is the gear oil in the lower unit, glad this helped and let me know how it goes!

Awesome video! I have the same motor on a 80s model trihull 16 ft boat. Question… Since I’ve had the boat, I cannot get it to start without starting fluid for the life of me. But after it starts, it runs great! I had a boat mechanic clean all carbs and replace gaskets. I also replaced the fuel pump and filter. It’s currently pulling very clean gas with appropriate oil mixture. I previously suspected it was water in gas tank… but confirmed that’s not it. I’m priming the bulb and I know the carbs are filling like they are supposed to. It just never wants to run without a couple of sprays of starting fluid (or dare I say carb cleaner). Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance! Edit: I also replaced primer solenoid without any difference. I hear the clicking that you hear when pushing in the key.

@buschfishin
@buschfishin 8 ай бұрын
I do not have a video on it but it’s something i’ll keep in mind for an upcoming video. If you have the red plug there will be a grey wire coming off of it, that goes to the “signal” post/wire on the tachometer. Then you have to make sure it has the SAME engine 12v and ground as the engine. The easiest way to do this is to steal it from the controls/gauge harness

Really good work. How are you checking the idle and wot ignition timing? I own a 1984 Johnson 70hp. Also fyi - I've found that those new grey line primer bulb fuel lines didn't work for me. It choked the fuel feed so I went to the new BRP available for these engine and had no issues. Another thing - I have found that E10 gas has probably deformed my choke solenoid housing and plunger cylinder. I need to take it completely apart to drill out the plastic cylinder by hand with a drill bit and sand down the metal slug. It used to get stuck but now it slides freely. I run ethanol free gas now.
@buschfishin
@buschfishin Жыл бұрын
thank you! this is a great comment, checking idle is a combination of the tachometer i have hooked up on the test bench and sound (because i don’t trust my chinese tach) but it gets close enough, in the video i have it set actually a bit low, normally i would do higher because once in the water with some back pressure it’s drops down some rpm. WOT timing which isn’t seen in the video is a little bit questionable, basically have someone drive while i’ve got feet on the transom reading it 😂 - i agree with you those grey attwood plastic lines are not good long term and i plan to change them but at the time of building my boat it was all i had

Have 70 evinrude (VRO disconnected) it has same setup here only difference is my top carb has solo line from primer solenoid and bottom two carbs are the connected together ones. Opposite of you. Is it possible someone previously hooked it up wrong? Big difference? Thanks
@buschfishin
@buschfishin Жыл бұрын
Both primer lines get the same amount of fuel, yours is probably the right way because the lowest carb usually gets the most amount of fuel due to gravity so that top single primer line will be getting the most "pressure" out of the primer. Either way it's just for starting so it's not a huge deal where they go and it should be perfectly fine how it is.

Thanks for the demo! I have this same motor, but maybe the earlier version with the choke linkages. The motor is brand new to me and hasn't run right yet. My motor bogs, intermittently, when I put the throttle down. I've done the link and sync, checked the timing and same deal. Hopefully the carb cleaning will solve this! Have you done a compression test? I can't find the factory specs. I'm getting 100-80-100 (not sure about the order). Seems low to me. Anyhow enjoy the fish'n!
@buschfishin
@buschfishin 2 жыл бұрын
yes, i originally had an older 70hp with the manual choke and i had similar problems but mine would run up to 3,000 rpm and then bog. carb cleaning should solve your issues unless there’s an ignition problem. on my old 70 the compression test when i got it was all around 100psi. this motor didn’t sit as long so it was around 140 on all cylinders. has it been sitting? the 80psi cylinder is a little low but it could be due to a lack of fuel from the carbs causing your bogging issue. let me know!
@EH-sb7kt
@EH-sb7kt 2 жыл бұрын
@@buschfishin the motor didn't sit around too long was used regularly on a lake. It would sit all winter in the offseason when they didn't use it. I am using a cheap $40 compression tester which, I've heard, doesn't give accurate readings. Yes if this carb cleaning doesn't solve it I would now suspect ignition and/or electrical, thx. My motor is in really nice shape it was used on a freshwater lake however there is rust on most of the cable/wiring lugs, so I'll be cleaning that up regardless. Once again thank you for the carb cleaning demo I have a lot more confidence, now that I've seen your video, really appreciate it! Cheers

yes, on yours you probably have adjustable high and low speed jets but more likely than not a jet is clogged causing a lean condition, the proper thing to do would be to re build the carbs with new gaskets and clean them thoroughly, keep an eye out for any broken gaskets because sucking air behind where the carb mounts will cause a lean condition too

1 quick question. The service manual says to replace the 6 bolts holding the air intake / silencer base plate to the carbs every time they are removed. It also says to replace the cork gaskets, but let's not worry about that. I notice you didn't mention replacing the bolts, so I assume you re-used the originals. You didn't apply thread lock, which is pre-applied to new ones, and still evident (blue) on mine. Is this completely unnecessary? With OEM bolts @ $9.95 a piece, I doubt I'll be replacing mine either.
@buschfishin
@buschfishin 6 ай бұрын
The idea is that with the loctite the bolts can never vibrate loose making the cover come off and letting stuff get sucked into the carbs or that a bolt doesn’t fall and get sucked into the intake. I personally don’t replace the bolts unless they are corroded badly but I also have never seen them come loose if they’re tightened especially when they’re threaded tight into the plastic.

My Johnson 70 only runs off the solenoid, what could be the problem with the carbs because I've already did a carb kit for them, Thanks
@buschfishin
@buschfishin Жыл бұрын
if the motor only runs with the primer solenoid engaged, the issue is lack of fuel. If it were me (i know this is going to suck) but i would take the carbs off again, take the fuel bowl off and take the drain plug out. first stick a needle in where the drain plug goes and clean out the jet in there, i would also verify that the floats are installed properly and not upside down i know it sounds dumb but it’s been done a lot before. i would also do the test i did in the video where you hold the carb upright and blow into the fuel inlet port and manually move the float up and down to make sure that it is opening. obviously make sure that the float pin, float seat and entire fuel inlet portion is spotless. another possibility would be making sure the little gasket that goes around the venturi pickup tube is installed. at that point and after making sure everything is spotless put it back together and try to run. make sure to pump the primer until it’s hard and if ir does run, make sure that primer is staying hard. check valve in the primer going out can cause loss of fuel pressure as well as a failing fuel pump.

out of water set the idle at 900-950rpm, once you get in the water it will drop down to around 800, that should be about right so that when you shift it doesn’t clunk too hard but also doesn’t die when in gear, if it does raise in half turn increments just until it doesn’t die when you put it in gear in the water

So parts cleaner eats rubber but not paint
@buschfishin

parts cleaner will break down the wax surface of the rubber and cause it to prematurely wear if it’s moving or cause it to crack and dry out sooner over time, won’t dissolve immediately, won’t destroy paint. will destroy powder coat though
