I've done such restoration work, in similar conditions. My only complaint regarding this guy is his reuse of old, worn bearings, rings and seals. Those valve seats were definitely sub-par. Replacement of wear items and attention to tolerance is the difference between a true restoration that will last, and a wash/paint job that will not.

This is the best video I have ever watched on KZbin. It was an incredible and fascinating journey from beginning to end. I base my opinion on the fact that this was all done manually and meticulously with the available tools, a tremendous amount of patience, and a lot of hard physical labor. The gentleman restored an engine from scrap to a functional engine. He did not have thousands of dollars worth of machining equipment, sandblasters, etc. Obviously, it is not restored to look like it just came off the assembly line, but the purpose was to have a functional engine to serve a specific purpose with minimal financial resources. I was impressed with how the video showed every step of the process without a word being said, but it was clear to me exactly what he was doing. An example of something that surprised and impressed me was the fact that he torqued the head bolts to specifications instead of simply tightening them. Congratulations on an excellent video and a successful restoration from a new fan and subscriber in the USA.🙂👍❤

This guy proved that he could get ANY car running that had no been atomised. The most significant thing to be is he never gives up on the hard pounding and resorts to more destructive short cuts. Moving a rusted on part by manual force, takes as long as it takes. The effect of manual impacts are always cumulative. None of it is wasted effort. In the context of a time related business, this makes no sense. Refusal to give up is not really the point either, any level of damage can be repaired in theory. More relevant to everyone are the 'side projects' gathering dust in the corner, that make all the daily slog more interesting. Humans are flexible when it comes to imposing value on things. The fact is that when it comes to projects with sentimental value we often have a sliding scale as to the value of our time. Many things are worth doing for a net material loss. That is why we blow money on recreation. My point is job satisfaction has a sliding scale of value too. And often we place too little value on those side projects gathering dust. We have all seen such projects that covered in decades worth of dust. Earning a living is fine. Paying off debts is fine. But if you are only working to survive, you are a wage slave. Being homeless is hard and dangerous, but not as dangerous as being a slave. Incidentally slavery was never abolished in the US. It's alive and well in the prison system. All automotive paint in the US is made with slave labor. Louisiana has just made it legal for to contract out prisoners to fast food restaurants. All the social progress of the 20th century is just a lie. Depressing eh?

In the context here these workers probably have a better work relationship in spite of low wages. The boss of the enterprise is unlikely to be a billionaire and might even be working with the rest of the workers. It's the work ethics that made the UK corner shop run by Asian immigrants so successful in the last century. Family groups and friends will pool resources to set up any enterprise. Having checked on teenagers about to leave schools for some time it was always good to see that they had job opportunities suiting them and offered by the community.

I particularly liked the injector hard lines, then the rocker-arms being used as a drift, other mentions include the assumption that once submerged, the engine would have previously been 'ok' therefore 'no measurement whatsoever'. Then there is the liberal use of wire brush and sandpaper on journal and bearing surface- this is beyond favourite- it is beyond true bravery. The oil filter housing troubles near the end are particularly hilarious. Hey! it looks good! (for a few minutes in rattle can silver and bright red). This is an old Hino 7+ litre n/a six. These are strong. Old mate here is trying to wring the last few percent out of this venerable engine's life. That is the best and most accurate reading of this entire cluster of behaviours 'addressing this engine' that can be conceded here.

If you turned this guy loose with a $1000 Harbor Freight gift card and gave him some garage space he would probably build a space ship. Mad respect. It is hard enough fixing scrap yard engines when they have been stored properly. This thing had the valve covers off and standing water in the cylinders. kt3406e a great YT channel for diesel rebuilds (OK he rebuilds Cats and destroys other diesels for some reason). He normally does everything better than by the book. He just did a in frame rebuild where he took an engine apart and replaced the destroyed parts with the least bad spares he had in his shop. I think the only new parts were gaskets, seals and some bearings.

I'm not a mechanic, but when you clean these parts, even with 3000 grit you are still removing material. Clearances matter in the piston, crankshaft, and many other places. And I think the epoxy patch at 1:00:10 is a tad janky.

Overall, I'm very touched by this renovation, well done! Of course, I was shocked by the acting with the valves. Didn't you replace the plugs of the cylinder block and head cooling jacket? The conditions in the workshop and the method of repair are very far from perfect, original parts are most likely not found. But I'm very happy with what I saw. Thank you. Does the engine seem to misfire in 1-2 cylinders? How will the engine be used next? What is a superbot?

Fair play to the man since he's working with what's at hand. That said the bearings, shells and races etc should have been replaced if the engine is going to be reliable. The engine sounds like it's badly misfiring and the white smoke is a dead giveaway it will need to be properly rebuilt very soon
