Great video, very helpful. Not sure if this helps anyone coming here to watch, but I could not find info on thermal pad thickness ANYWHERE, so I bought I micrometer, took the card apart, and physically measured thickness. My card is factory pads, there are 2 thicknesses: Thicker one is 1mm and is 57mm x 21mm. Three thinner ones are 0.5mm and are: 2- 13mm x 13mm 1- 48mm x 15mm You can see in his video which are which pretty easily. Hope this helps anyone struggling to find the right product like I was!

Thank you Jared i have been looking everywhere to find the thickness of the pads even asked on other video's and most just don't answer

@@michael-pw9cz You're welcome! And I went through the same thing, couldn't find the info anywhere. FYI changing the thermal pads on my 970 dropped ambient temps about 4 degrees for me, and temps under load dropped 5 degrees! (My old ones were in rough shape though) Good luck on the replacement!

@@jdkatz00 How long have you had your 970 mine is about 6 yrs old this will be the 1st time i have changed the pads and thermal paste my temps at moment are between 50-55 i will see what they get down to i'll let you know over the coming days.

@@michael-pw9cz I would say I've had mine about the same amount of time. That was also the first time the pads and paste were changed on mine. The paste was basically fossilized lol. Good luck!

Cheers for posting this in 2020. This card might not be top of the line, it might be 10 years old, but its still a fucking beast and it gets me by. Computer kept crashing on graphics intense games and its because the thermal paste needed to be reapplied.

Bro not having the 4th screw on the back is probably fucking with your thermals - it's likely contributing to uneven pressure on the die

I just cleaned my card and repasted along with replacing the thermal pads. I don't remember if there were LEDs that lit just below the PCIe power connectors. I don't see any LEDs lit on mine. Are there any the light on yours (I'm not referring to the windforce logo)?

Just notice you only have 3 screws to hold your heat sink.. it that ok?

Unfortunately, one of the four screws got stripped. So far I haven't encountered any issues without it, the gpu still works with good temps.

I just did this on my identical 970. My temps are really good but now after I load into a game it will play for just a few seconds and then knock my monitor off. I can still hear game but screen goes off. My temps never got above 55c. Any suggestions. Edit: I noticed that the VRM doesn't make an impression on the pad like the Vram does. Maybe the 1mm pad is too thin? Edit: problem solved, put another layer of 1mm thermal pad over VRM. Running smooth and cool now

I would change the 1mm out to 1.5mm to have it correct thickness. It will probably run better.

I'd buy all of them. You don't know what you need until you break it open. They don't usually tell you on data sheets.

Mine hasnt exceeded 60c for the entire time i've had it. Even when playing at the highest settings in games. Idle - 25-27c Under load - 38-55c max. It should be bcs of my room being quite cold tho

Is it ok to just buy a sheet of 2mm thermal grizzly pads and use that for all (or 1.5mm) ?? As there is only $1 difference in price, I would like to use 2mm. and issues doing this?
@gleamnite
@gleamnite 3 жыл бұрын
If you use out-of-spec thermal pads then you risk having no heat transfer between the thermal padded components (too thin), or no heat transfer brttwen the GPU and the heat pipes (too thick), due to lack of contact. Except for super squishy thermal pads, you need to use the same thickness that you removed.

@darrens3494

It needs the backplate, don't ever run a graphics card without all it's components
@XplodeeeQQ

That's not true. You can use it without backplate. I use them like that and it's not a problem
@WisteriaBerlitz
@WisteriaBerlitz 3 жыл бұрын
A backplate helps to dissipate a bit of heat, a GPU doesn't need it to work. It's typically included only for the higher end models.
