Thank you for addressing the lint! I started getting in the habit of pulling the hairs out of my brush every time I brush my hair, but I’ve noticed the lint lingers on the brush and gets caught in those little beads on the bristles. Definitely needed to see this!!!

I started washing my brushes regularly a few months ago and I have noticed a HUGE difference in how greasy my hair gets! Over the years I tried everything to make my hair less oily and washing my brushes has been the only thing to significantly decrease how oily my hair is. My hair feels so much more clean and healthy now, I was shocked at how big of a difference it was from before!

I use tons of oils and oil based products in my hair and I don’t wash my hair often so I find myself cleaning it more sometimes, because I wanna be able to go awhile without washing my hair but in order for that you need to remove all the product build up, grease, dirt etc.

The lint is so annoying I'm hoping this video helps me get rid of the lint balls in my wet brush and my one teasing brusg my tangle teasers brush I can get the lint out easly sense the bristles on my ultimate detangler doesn't have those ball like tips

I would recommend that you face the bristle down when drying that way the excess water can get out of the holes. Otherwise standing water could create mold, kind of like a child's bath toy.

That "lint" is mostly dead skin cells. THAT'S why we clean our combs and brushes! BTW, there are comb and brush cleaners made for soaking that will partially dissolve a lot of the debris that collects in them. Also, a cheap nail brush is great for scrubbing brushes and combs. (retired hairstylist) Thanks for reminding everyone to do this!⚘

What is some of the brush cleaners name of product and brand name? Would be very useful i like having a specific cleanser for the task at hand one of the things that makes me kinda hesitant to clean my brushes I don’t want damage or the cleaning option to add it’s own layer of film or cleanser residue lol like I think j&j head to toe baby wash might despite being a non soap cleanser lol can people buy these cleansers without a Cosmo license or is it something I have to ask my stylist to purchase for me if I ask nicely? Years and years back I invested in a bamboo brush with boars bristles. Before then I had never learned how to clean brushes but it's been so important to keeping my brush functional and my hair and scalp healthier! I'm happy to learn that my cleaning steps line up with yours, it's always good to learn you're doing something right. Funnily enough, it’s my husband that washes my brushes about once a year when he notices how gross they are 🤣 I’m good about regularly removing hair from the bristles and trying to keep the pom poms out, but dead skin, lint, etc. still accumulate at the base on the plastic. I think next time I shower, I’ll bring my brush in with me and clean it! Thanks for this video.

When a brush got too dirty i used to throw it out, but last week i filled a container with warm water, put detergent on my brush, and used our ikea dish brush to go at it. I always remove excess hair from my brush every time i use it, so it was mainly getting the oils and dead skin out. Took me less than 5 min and it looks brand new again!

As an obsessive hair brush cleaner (long hair, tangly, don't use much product), I cannot abide leaving hair in my brush every day. Yesterday I bought a combo boar bristle and plastic-tipped hair brush and just love it! So much less hair breakage. Thank you for making this video. I learned so much about cleaning my brushes. I’ve noticed the build up in my brushes, particularly after getting the hairs off (which i do once every two or three uses tbh) for a long time now, but it hasn’t really bothered me until recently, I started getting squirmish about it and wondering how I could clean that up effectively that wasn’t trying to pull them off one by one with my fingernails, which I tried a few times but it was tedious and kind of disgusting. I was just thinking about this the other day, gazing in dismay at my brushes and wondering if it was actually possible to get them properly clean. They always get this sort of...little circle of yuck around the base of each bristle and I have on occasion gone through and manually sort of plucked each one off ( by sort of grabbing it with my nails and pulling it up and over the bristle), but that kind of repetitive action can make me feel really nauseated, so i can't always face the idea of doing it, so the brush goes away somewhere out of sight to be forgotten. Now? Now I might give it another go. I just need a rake thingie and a cheap toothbrush...and some sort of soap-style product (sooo...just need to buy literally everything you mentioned, that's all).

Great video! I learned from my mom some 50 years ago - she cleaned everybody’s hair tools on a regular basis, and most were beautiful woods with boar bristles. She used ammonia, but somehow managed to keep the wood parts out of the solution in a long glass dish. My family always had beautiful hair. I, on the other hand, have mostly plastic hair tools anymore. I typically use the tallest vessels I have, which are a 20-year-old enormous drink container and a vertical asparagus steamer. I start with a cheap rattail comb to remove the hair masses. After submerging in an ammonia solution for a few minutes, I vigorously roll each brush’s bristles against another’s to dislodge every ‘bit’ of buildup and remaining hair the rattail didn’t pick out. Nothing ever escapes that! Then I rinse them all under hot running water. I dry every brush bristles-down or on its brush end, never flat with bristles up. Until your video and a few others, I’d never heard of using baking soda! So I just tried it - half a box of (expired) baking soda, a splash of Dawn dishwashing detergent, and 3 quarts of boiling water. No noxious ammonia. The solution worked so well, I tossed all my goto hair accessories sans headbands (which I’d never cleaned before) in for good measure. All came out squeaky clean. FWIW, my post-cleaning solution didn’t look anywhere near the satisfying brown other YT-ers have seen. Too, don’t forget to clean your hairdryer’s inlets on a regular basis. Of course, you can’t use water for it, but it’s important to do it so your appliances’ motors don’t burn out. Cleaning the grills requires tweezers, picks, and time. But it really matters, not only re airflow but to prevent fire. Sadly, every hairdryer on the US market is imported anymore, and not a one is screened for UL-approved authenticity. I’ve actually met women whose hairdryers have gone up in flames when using, only to find the manufacturers are fly-by-night and the retailers blow their complaint off.

I’m a hairdresser so: My work brushes are cleaned and barbicided between each use, thoroughly and would definitely be a tweezer getting every last pompom situation. My home brushes get a daily hair Matt pulled out and monthly quick scrub with antibac, if I think about it 😂 My best tip is to use an old tint brush! Long pointy handle and lots of long bristles in a thin strip that can absolutely get everywhere

Tangle teeter is the easiest one, I put some liquid soap on a nail brush and scrub under running water. Takes about 30 seconds. Natural hair brushes are more difficult so hear for some tips.

With my hairbrushes, I use them both on my hair and on my 3 cats and 1 dog, so learning how to clean the brushes is very important. The ideas you suggest for how to remove the build up on round brushes is the reason I watched your video. I was honestly contemplating very recently about cleaning my brushes, but I had absolutely no idea how to. I own two brushes, one that I use in the shower to evenly coat my hair with conditioner and the other is one I use when my hair is dry .... I didn't think about it when I used it on my Halloween wig that I dyed and now the bristles are stained black 😩 But it was an old, cheap brush so maybe it's just time for a new one. I am generally a mess but surprisingly my hair brushes are very clean, I get rid of the hairs almost every time I use them and I thoroughly wash them maybe every 4-6 weeks 🥳

Awesome video, I have never come across a hair brush cleaning tutorial before, really glad you made this. One tip I have is when the hair on your round brush is wound super tight, use a thread ripper (you can buy these in dollar stores or in fabric stores) to cut the hairs at the base along one side of the brush. This way you can remove the hair on a round brush in one "sheet" like you would any other brush. ♥♥♥

This was super helpful. I pull the hairs out of my brush consistently but always noticed the lint pompoms (which cute word to describe them) & even though I try my best to pull the them off its difficult to get them off. My best friend always makes comments how my brushes aren't clean enough with the way I was doing it. This was so much easier. Wish I would found this sooner cause they look so much better. I'm worried that my Wet Brush will get water trapped under the pad thing and it will get moldy. How do you make sure it's dry under there after cleaning?

I also have a wet brush and I squish the pad with a towel to get it as try as possible, if you squish it and no little water bubbles show then you should be good. The rest will just evaporate if left in a dry environment. Don't put your brush in the sun! Plastic hates sun.

I don’t submerge my wet brush in water. I just wash it over the sink sideways or pointing downwards. It gets clean, less chance of water under the pad.

I’m a hairstylist and I regularly submerge my wet brush in barbicide solution. I squish as much out with a dry towel and then I actually blowdry one corner of the wet brush pad, which forces excess water out of the other side!

Perfect. Now that my hair is about 18 inches long post Covid I noticed my detangler brushes had lots of lint. I tried picking this out with a tweezers but it was hard work. I noticed there was some grease when you compressed the lint. So new routine now as you suggested. A good wash , toothbrush and a tweezers for the more stubborn collections of lint. Thanks for the tip about the tweezers! I generally pull those little pompoms off with my fingernails and about half the time they take the little plastic ball on the tip of the bristle with them. That's generally how I gauge when it's time to buy a new brush; enough of the balls are gone that the brush is starting to feel scratchy on my scalp. 😱 I adore my current brush; it's made of wood with a mix of boar and nylon bristles and was ridiculously cheap for the quality (bestool on Amazon). It also came with a very nice little cleaning rake and a cloth bag to keep it in. Even though it wasn't expensive, I want to make it last (you never know when stuff is going to be discontinued, also why be wasteful) so thanks for this video!

😉😉😉 I've washed my brush twice since getting it about 5 months ago, I got a free mini rake with it that I use about every two weeks. Before the rake I used any pointy thing close to me. Love the little rake. It's so satisfying 😂

Funny, I washed my brushes a couple of weeks ago. Took the with me in the shower and used a color brush (the one that’s used to apply dye to hair) and scrubbed the heck out of it. Very satisfying.

This helped a ton!! I usually just throw my brushes out and buy a new one, I have oily hair so now it makes sense why so much lint is in it! But I have a leopard print one now that I love and it’s soft and was very pricey so don’t wanna throw it out. Definitely about to clean it

Every time I brush my hair, I pull the hair out of my brush...every single time. However, my hair is way passed my bum so having really long hairs left in my brush is a complete no no. I don't know how anyone could keep hairs in theirs brushes though. It would drive me insane, lol. Lee x

What a great video! I was just thinking about how I need to clean one of my favorite hair brushes. Using an unused toothbrush works wonders.. One thing you didn't mention is that we can all obtain barbicide from sally's beauty and soak the brushes that can be soaked in it for 10 mins and for fancier brushes put it in a spray bottle and spray down the brush. This sanitizes them and gets off any extra bacteria and what not. (Cosmo student here for those wondering how ik this).

Best thing for my curly wavy hair was to get rid of all brushes that have those little balls at the end of the bristles. Just invest in tangle teaser, a wet brush or anything similar of ANY price point. No more pulling on my hair plus so much easier to clean because the hair and gunk just flows out of it with minimal trouble when I give in and must wash them.

I currently use a comb to clean my brushes but I end up having to pick bits out with my fingers and it drives me mad. So excited for this new tool. Thank you so much! Who knew this was a thing?!

i usually only brush my hair after a shower because my hair is very fine and if i brush it while it’s dry it gets really frizzy. but recently i bought a hair tonic that i’ve been brushing through my hair, and ngl it’s a bit oily and made my brushes get dirty much easier 😭 i always tug hair out of the brush after every brushing, but the little dust pom-poms are impossible to get out. so thank you for this video!!! it was super helpful!

I have just washed my hair brushes (with shampoo), but the toothbrush tip I will adopt😊 And I let the brushes soak for way longer, sometimes up to an hour.

I always pull out the hair right after I'm done brushing it. I dry brush, then brush in the shower while conditioner is in - both times I immediately pull out the hair. Then always rinse off the brush after I'm done styling and properly wash it wish shampoo when I remember. It's super easy, don't need to worry about gross build up, very easy to maintain too! And would definitely recommend getting a brush that doesn't have the little balls. I switched to one without and it's SO much easier to clean, plus doesn't pull on my knots as much.

I personally clean my hair brushes every other weekend. Keeps them nice & product build up free. I have a clean hair only brush and a smoothing brush for when it’s not freshly washed and a shower comb for in shower only.

Curly girl here. I have two brushes in my rotation: one I very rarely use to brush out my dry (this one is super old) and a denman that I use to style my wet curls on wash day. I’ve taken good care of my Denman, but my other brush was pretty gnarly. After watching your video, both brushes are clean and ready to sit neglected until my next styling or wash day!

You should do one on cleaning your hot tools. The buildup of product there can get gruesome and it's not as simple as soaking on water and soap

I pull the hair from my brush every time i brush my hair!! I have waist length hair. I have always had long hair and i didn't realize you could wash a brush until someone mentioned it on a historybounding group I'm in. After that I got myself a fancy wood handle boar/plastic bristle combo brush - so I can feel like a princess when I brush my hair! I had tried the wet brush like that and enjoyed it.
