Have a question for you. Bike has been running great since I cleaned the carburetor 2 months ago. But just yesterday (2/4/2022) on my way home from work, going about 70mph, my bike sputters and dies, first time it did that since cleaning it. I have fuel, cranks over good so I think battery is good. I checked and cleaned carburetor again but it wasn’t dirty, but when I throttle even while on neutral, it still sputters and dies on me. What could be going on? I’ve heard from bad spark plugs, to dirty fuel/filter to dirty carburetor. Thanks for your time.

Hello Rocco, Thanks for a great video that gave me the confidence to venture out of my comfort zone and help a friend with his 2007 Shadow Spirit C2. He bought it as a non-runner (5,000 miles only). Great overall condition, bike started but would not respond to the throttle past the idle and would stall when the choke was pushed in. At home, we removed the air box and noticed that the slide/vacuum piston would not move up when I used my finger. We changed the main and idle jet, the needle, the float valve. We did not change the pilot screw. We checked the air cut off valve and cleaned the accelerator pump rod and everything else we could without a complete disassembly. I was able to move the slide easily with my finger. We put it all back together Started the bike and it fired up immediately and ran very well at idle. Rolled on the throttle gently and it stumbled at about 1,000 rpm. Checked the accelerator pump and it seemed to be working fine. However the slide was not moving at any throttle setting. Used my finger to operate it and I was able it get it to around 4,000 rpm with additional gentle roll on. It did not like a firmer roll on at all. So Rocco, I have run out of ideas other than to replace all the diaphragms, which my friend is willing to do, but these parts are quite pricey and I want to make sure we are spending money wisely. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get this problem solved. Thanks a heap, Chris

Did you remove air gas screw...You will have to drill out plug...as for slide movement CV Carburator operate when your motorcycle is moving it creates vacuum that move slide up as speed increases. Check plugs to see if they are fuel fouled..If they are float jet seat not sealing causing high fuel levels.Let me know how it works out. Will it run on choke? Sounds like excelerator pump not freely squirting fuel.
@SELondonUSA
@SELondonUSA 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the fast reply. Is the air gas screw the same as the pilot screw? If so, we did not change it as the one in the kit looked different from the one in the carb and we did not have the special tool to remove it. If it is not the same, then what and where is the air gas screw? Thanks for the explanation on the slide movement. We will check the float again and the condition of the plugs as you suggest. The bike does run on the choke; we will try it on a higher throttle as well. The excelerator/accelerator pump seemed to be squirting out quite a bit of fuel when we pushed the slide up with a high throttle. Will get back to you when we resume work (when the wives allow us to)... Best to you.

Great instructions! I over filled my oil during an oil change and oil got into the air box. I cleaned it out, put a new air filter in, and changed the spark plugs. The bike runs well, but after 50% throttle, the bike won't run faster... even stuttering as it can't seem to handle the extra fuel. Would a carb cleaning help? This literally happened after a standard oil change, but I overfilled. Thank you so much!

I just bought one of these, but we (lol well, me dad) talked down the price because there's carb issues. It's my first bike! Great job with the explanation. Hi Rocco! Your vids are probably the most straight forward on KZbin, really appreciate all the effort you put in. I’ve got a problem with my 2005 shadow (same as this video) wondering if you could help. The bike really struggles to start so I checked fuel is squirting and it wasn’t, cleaned the carb, and it is now. Battery is good and full charged, Choke out, fuel tap on reserve and also tried in the ‘on’ position and new spark plugs - doesn’t make a difference, it just turns and really struggles to start up. Plenty of fuel in there. Eventually it will fire, and once it’s running if I try again, it will fire right up. Could you advise anything ? Before this, the bike would fire right up every time with no choke and just sit idling happily.

If there's no signs of gas squirting into the throat of the carburetor when you twist the throttle. You need to replace the diaphragm in your accelerator pump. Is this what your bike is doing not squirting fuel into throat of Carburator? I will send you a video on replacing the diaphragm on a CV carburetor. It will be the same principle as your Honda CV carburetor, but it is done on a sportster. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXmbcmZ6qM-jm6c. Any questions just ask, Same principle as your Carburator.

Sounds like you need to clean your carburetor..and do and oil/filters service...It is normal for a bike that sit too long. float needle jet has to be cleaned, Do this one time if this does not work. Buy a new one the rubber on float needle is bad. Let me know how this works out. How many miles?

Following the first incident I cleaned the carb jets and the bike started without leakage but would not idle. I cleaned them (carb jets) again but following the second cleansing it would not start and fuels again poured into the air filter housing and out of the exhaust. Help!!!

Thanks for the vid Rocco! Really appreciate it. I am still having an issue though. Bike would only run on choke, saw a small amount of gas at the accelerator pump nozzle before cleaning the Jets. Cleaned Jets and now the bikes starts and idles great! Only problem is the bike hesitates on throttle. It will work slow, but bog with a quick twist. When the bike is off, I can get no fuel to squirt from the accelerator pump nozzle. I took the pump apart and cleaned it but same issue. Any thoughts? The pump appears to stroke as it should and the diaphragm looks great. Maybe clogged nozzle or check valve? Cleanable?
@TwoWheelRocco
@TwoWheelRocco 5 жыл бұрын
Yes you can clean the nozzle. Take apart and use thin wire and compressed air until it flows fuel freely. Look close at the fuel bowl at bottom. And accelerator pump. use compressed air. cleaner all holes and needle until it works. The pin is pressed in and can be removed with small pliers from bowl. Move back and forth and out. reinstall with needle hole facing carb. It can take some time but you will get it. Let us know how it works out.

@@TwoWheelRocco got it fixed! Did not have to remove the nozzle from the carb. Used a can of carb cleaner as my compressed air until all orifices would flow. I had tried this earlier with just compressed air but the carb cleaner worked! Also used a straight pin to clean all holes. Put it back together and it runs strong now! Now just to clean the tank of old gas and put her back together!

Check accelerator pump. If you remove air cleaner cover, you will see a brass pin. Twist throttle and see if gas squirt into carb. if not that's the problem. Diaphragm needs to be replaced. When was the last time this bike ran right? Let us know how this works out.

@@TwoWheelRocco The bike was running great a couple of weeks ago. I had the carb serviced with new part at beginning of year. The petcock filter was not good so I assume junk got into the carb and it started failing. I cleaned it and it runs smooth in idle now but will not accelerate before dying unless I pull the chock all the way out. I'll check the accelerator pump next. I also got curious and opened the top to look at the big diaphragm, maybe I did not mount it right before closing. BTW, best shadow carb video out there, even with the focus issue. Thanks !!!
