I read do NOT use steal wool SOS pads after I tired to clean a spot in my sink and made a bigger spot. I see this worked for you maybe my sink is older and uses a different coating. Mine is 41 years old. Kohler makes a cleaner for this type of sink

Steel wool would seem to be a very aggressive abrasive to use on a porcelain surface. The surface does look nice after you completed the cleaning. How has it held up since a year ago or so since you posted this video? have the stains returned, especially the rust spots? did you consider re-glazing the surface?
@richardclinton-ml6dc Жыл бұрын
I haven't personally tried it on porcelain, but 0000 steel wool which is the grade S.O.S. pads use are specifically made to buff and polish metals such stainless steel (which retains its shine after being cleaned with the 0000 grade steel wool). I know the finishes are different, but this is virtually non abrasive/not abrasive at all COMPARED to other steel wool most people are familiar with. Would love to see your answers responded to by OP. (:

Steel Wool does not seem to scratch glass/ similar provided it is not the soaped version, & not the stainless steel variety.

By far the easiest way to clean this is by using household laundry bleach. I just place a paper towel in the bottom of the sink, pour a tablespoon or so of bleach straight from the bottle onto the paper towel and then gently wipe it around. You should be very careful not to get the bleach on any clothes or towels as it will bleach spot materials. It works almost instantly. So to finish, I just gently but thoroughly rinse the sink to avoid ANY splashing so it doesn't get on my clothes. Thoroughly but gently rinse out the paper towel with water and then throw it in the trash. It is far easier and works far better than any other chemicals, pads, etc.

I just did what u said...allow the bleach-soaked paper towels to line the sink's stained areas...10 mins later back scrub w/a gentle scrub pad....looking brand new thank u! Get paper pieces out of the sink & into the trash.

I used to just fill the sink to the brim with hot water and Clorox. I forget how much Clorox I’d add. No sheets of paper towels involved. Super easy.

Boy I’d think that would rub porcelain off after while getting down to the metal. Know it’s a rental but still.

Yes, not recommended to use SOS or abrasives on old porcelain sinks. It works for awhile, but will actually make the problem worse once the protective layer has worn away. A paste can be made with hot water and BKF for stains, but shouldn't be rubbed on. I would use one of the products recommended by antique plumbing suppliers. DEA Bathroom Machineries is one that has a couple of options.

We have found the following methods to work on our old (1940) porcelain sinks. For iron we use Bar Keepers friend. Super easy no hard scrubbing and it’s cheap. Magic eraser also works but a bit more costly. For stubborn stains we lightly dampen paper towels with bleach, lay them on the stained areas overnight. This always gets it back to brilliant white! Great video thanks for sharing!

Use vinegar in a bag with a rubber band on the faucet tip let it sit overnight. Be careful when using CLR. Wear a N95 mask and ventilate well. Read instructions you supposed to let it sit. Yes the end result was great but I was concerned for you.
@CleanFreakGermaphobe3 жыл бұрын
Yes I have another video about that and it works so well. But I used a stronger vinegar and it worked in an hour instead of 2424 hours! I think the vinegar needed an n95. I actually don't own one...

I prefer using abrasive side sponges AND AJAX cleanser with Bleach. You NEED bleach to clean stains. SOS has the soap BUT I prefer a bleach additive in a product that gets embedded stains out. I know SOS usually leaves a stainless mark on the enamel which I dont feeling like rescrubbing.

Another note is that if you have a later model DROP in sink, chances are the enamel quality is thinner and will need more intensive cleaning. I found this out with the rental in my sons house. The older the sink the better chances of a durable quality enamel. I had bought a bathtub from the 1930s that polished up beautifully after it was removed. It has more shine than the sink I cleaned in my sons house which was probably from the 1970s/1980s.
