The most comprehensive video on jewellery repair I've found. I'm gonna have a go at repairing a vintage silver clasp. I bought it for restringing my late grandma's pearls, but the rhinestones on the clasp turned yellow after a few weeks. I was devastated 😢

Great advice. Also, I lay a wash cloth over the drain when working in a sink in case I drop anything or a stone falls out.

I was always taught that you should never submerge costume jewelry in water. The water gets behind the stone and eventually does more damage than good. However, like you I can't resist occasionally using water. I wait until the hottest days of summer to do this. After washing off the jewelry, I place it outside in the sun. That way, mother nature dries the parts that can't be seen by the naked eye. I have also been known to put the jewelry on a tray in the oven at about 100°

Oh! I have never put it in the oven, but yes, I guess that would evaporate the everything, lol. Excellent idea! I will have to look into at what degree a rhinestone will crack. That would be my real worry I think.

Lol, thank you. I am not that young, but it is true. My mother and father we both big antique and vintage collectors. I learned so much from a very early age. Then my father and I had a vintage business for a while, but eventually when I became pregnant I just went to all jewelry because it was easier. So now I do not just collect, but sell it too so that I can stay home with my daughter. Its been so fun. Thank you again!

You are so practical and make repairing jewelry accessible. I will rewatch both (since I was watching while multi-doin') 😀 Question: it is okay to wash and submerge rhinestones in water and use soap as lkng as they are cool dried immediately and completely? Is that just for stones without foil on the back?
@OlivesVintageMarket
@OlivesVintageMarket 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry Dee I am just now seeing this. Foil backs are the ones you have to be careful with. That is because the water can get trapped under the stone and then tarnish. That is what creates those 'dead' stones. You can always do it though, and especially if it is a really gunky piece and replace the stone/s if/when they do become bad, lol.
@jeannestrickland7027
@jeannestrickland7027 9 ай бұрын
I always turn the oven off before putting the jewelry in. That way it starts out warm and gradually cools down over time. Someone else suggested a hair dryer on a warm setting. I think I'll try that. I'm just not sure it would get under the stones.
@OlivesVintageMarket
@OlivesVintageMarket 9 ай бұрын
Yeah the evaporation it definitely the biggest part so it will not tarnish that foil backing. I think the oven is an excellent idea, I’ve just never braved it lol

@@OlivesVintageMarket lol! I had the glue everywhere, I was worried I would glue my fingers together. I purchased a brooch today that was half off from a thrift store going out of business, I paid $7.50, it's driving me crazy, I really think it's a score, it is marked fine silver & 14k, it is mixed media with what looks like a cel that depicts the moon, a floor, part of a phone and a few other things. It's call "another place & time" the last name looks like Ventz. I don't know if you ever get a feeling about something but I get that with this piece. I hope you have a Happy Easter 🐣 🐇

@OlivesVintageMarket 2 жыл бұрын
lol, right. I cannot take one more the ants go marching! I use to restore porcelain professionally, but now it is all for myself and my business. I help people all of the time, but I do not charge for it. I know the feeling of the one stone missing and now I feel like its more of an opportunity than heart breaking, lol. ~ There are so many different colors out there now it is hard sometimes, but when looking at the Swarovski color sheet you can usually match them pretty easily. Here is one. (I never buy them just showing you an example) www.ebay.com/itm/333244068169?chn=ps&var=542866150601&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=542866150601_333244068169&targetid=1263104806246&device=c&mktype=&googleloc=1013200&poi=&campaignid=14859008593&mkgroupid=130497710760&rlsatarget=pla-1263104806246&abcId=9300678&merchantid=6296724&gclid=Cj0KCQiA37KbBhDgARIsAIzce14Em6ZNbWgApd8VBQeoIgp7IN6WMCdrhCDRXlmWRWnpiPzcCJh_nlIaAhwTEALw_wcB

Hi! Do you have an etsy or ebay page? I don't have facebook (yes, that's right) but I'd like to give a look to your shop. You seem to know what you are doing when you restore these works of art. Also, do you repair old costume jewelry for people? I live right outside NYC and either can't find anyone to do the work or it is so expensive - it could be worth three times the cost of a replacement brooch!! But then what happens to the old brooch when I get the replacement? I throw it away?!! What a waste! Also, people worked hard on these tiny pieces of art. That should be respected by fixing them, not just discarding them. Thanks for your choosen line of work; you ar doing a service to the lost art of great American craftsmenship. God bless!!😄

Thank you so much! It is so much fun and yes I do it for the love and history of these wonderful pieces. I do have an eBay store that is just Olive’s Vintage Market. Lol, yesterday my husband asked how many pieces did I have listed. I proudly said “Over 200”. He was so mad, because he knows I have that stashed under a table. Anyways one day I will have to actually list some things. I use to restore porcelain but I no longer restore for others unless it is a favor or someone contacts me personally.

Enjoyed this content so much! What do you feel about using plain epoxy glue to replace stones?
@OlivesVintageMarket
@OlivesVintageMarket 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! If you are talking about the two part epoxy glue there is a reason I do not use it, but it still works. I do not use it because of how thick it is. Usually thicker glue does not allow it to sit as firmly in the setting cup as the thinner glue. However, I have nothing against it. It is strong and does not turn yellow if placed completely under the stone.

@OlivesVintageMarket

Depends on the glue. Cheap super glues will come off in very hot water, and hot water also helps with the elmer type glues and cement glues. But if you come into contact with a resin or gorilla type of glue you better be ready to chisel those babies out, lol.
