I have found that using CRC 226 available at Home Depot in the electrical dept and steel wool takes off the rust and is less aggressive than using wet or dry sandpaper. In addition, the CRC 226 will work into the pores of the metal and prevent further rust. If I cut damp wood on my saw, I just wipe the table with a cloth and after spraying the CRC226 and no rust will form. It also good to free up rusted pliers and preventing trowels from rusting... try it... about $2.75 a can.

George, good post, I fight the miss laid "sweating can" in my shop all the time, On another note, I bought a an old Craftsman table saw at an auction last weekend. The problem is rust over the table top that comes off on my hands if I touch the top. I'll try this method of cleaning it this weekend. Thank you for posting.

ha ha, I catch the cynicism in that remark. This obsessive-compulsive dude would have a heart attack in my shop.

oh NO NO NO... What got me was seeing something so pristine being able to be returned to its original condition, seeing that actually did make me feel very good. I'm a collector, when I'm the one purchasing something, I feel the need to preserve it as much as I can But I've also inherited some old tools from my folks, for instance, rust and bent, and I have an equal liking to that, their state don't bother me... I actually really liked the video, I wasn't being cynic at all, no... cheers! =)

I've removed the extensive rust from an old craftsman table saw with mineral spirits and an RO sander with fine grit sandpaper. It sure takes some time and TLC though...and don't forget to put a drop cloth underneath to avoid getting rust all over your garage/workshop floor.

Make sure you sand with the grain :)

I bought an antique table saw that had been setting for many years. it had not pitted but was covered in powdery rust. I took a soft wire wheel 7 inch I think and put on a heavy duty side grinder and buffed it well with that. The brown patina it left is awesome because it cuts down on glare and just looks amazing. Then I took a can of the really cheap car paste wax and put it on thick, let it set for several days until I needed it and buffed with a towel. After a week or so after I re aplied the paste wax , let set for several days and buffed with a towel again. Wood slides better than any spray products I've ever used. Use it on your jointers as well. It'll feel like you've added roller bearings to your equipment. Remember to use the cheap thick paste wax because it stays a long time. I had tried McGquires and it didn't keep the bare metal slick near as long as the cheap stuff.

I appreciate your demonstration with a lemonade can, but we know it's always beer folks are drinking, not lemonade.

tomjsuite That’s not what the previous commenter was saying.... however, if u lol closely, you’ll see he set the can on the plastic part of his saw, the left part of the saw is black, because it’s plastic or something similar.

I've been watching a bunch of videos and trying to determine if WD-40 or Fluid Film is the answer and I found this article... bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/threads/37704-Protective-spray?s=d5e225f9e42770a032ce3b54e7e9ff0e&p=486765#post486765 I'm gonna get some LPS3 after that.
