Fantastic! Always love finding new ways to clean some of the nastier pieces! About a year ago I started following a cleaning company and they use powdered Tide and Bleach together in hot water to clean. I've tried it and it works wonders on seaglass and old bottles. I don't typically use harsh chemicals to clean my house, but on my beautiful sea treasures I'll use whatever works! I see a rock tumbler in my future!! Not yo alter but to clean!!

This is an awesome idea for cleaning!! We have a tumbler we were using for rocks from the Bay of Fundy and to remove some Sharp edges of interesting old broken vintage and antique glass found on the Halifax Harbour (what we named “garage glass”) lol. BUT it didn’t occur to me to use the tumbler on a low setting to clean our seaglass. I didn’t want to impact the trueness of the seaglass. Now that I’ve seen this we’ll definitely save time and improve the appearance of our stained treasures and not lose the value of its trueness by being augmented . Thanks Mike for the insight!

As a rock tumbler, I can give you an additional tip that might also help. By some Borax, and put about 1 or 2 Tablespoons of that in, I also like to add some shavings of the pure white ivory soap. It works wonders for the last stage in polishing rocks or switching from one stage of grit to another. I bet it would work well for your process too. *just make sure air doesn't build up in the rock tumbler. I usually don't have trouble with that, but it can happen every once in a while.

Hi Mikee! Thanks for the video interesting and educational video. I can’t believe how clean the sea glass became after using Iron Out and your tumbler. I don’t think using a tumbler to clean the sea glass is cheating. A question just popped into my mind while watching this video, do you know if hydrogen peroxide will clean sea glass? Also, is there somewhere on the Internet where you sell your creations? … I agree that children are life’s greatest gift. I have one grown up son that I love with all my heart. There’s nothing more rewarding than being a parent. Do your children like to look for sea glass? I’m dying to go to the coast now and look for some. Is there a point where it cannot be called seaglass or has been too altered to be genuine? I know some sellers of seaglass art say you have to disclose what has been done to the seaglass either for transparency or because of some seaglass authenticity rules, do you know if this is true? (unsure if this is just a thing in the U.S or a worldwide seaglass thing). Our treasures from Fort bragg will definitely need some kind of cleaning as many of the clears are very yellowed or stained with the metals that it was thrown away with.
@SeaGlassArchaeology3 жыл бұрын
I don’t mention it in any videos however I’ve been co-administration (and treasurer) of a Facebook group called “Sea Glass Auctions” since 2015. It was the worlds first (and still regarded as primer) international online collective sales group where sellers are carefully vetted and monitored for artificially tumbling or seeding of beaches. I do agree when selling sea glass one should disclose if it’s genuine or not however very counterfeiters few do. Not far from my “sea glass shanty” where I earn my living theirs a man who sells huge shards of artificially tumbled sea glass as genuine, at the outrageous price of 5 for $50 on cheap “turn your skin green” necklace chains however the landlord only sees him as a tenant, therefore has no vested interest in “integrity” . And as I mentioned in a few videos some areas have a group of pickers with a “culture of seeding” where they feel its imperative to replaceable glass they pick. (Such as Glacé Bay) Unfortunately the best I can do is hold my head high knowing my moral compass is pointing north, and lead by a positive example. For the past decade a “rock tumbler” stood against everything I believe in and still does if intended for creating glass which is to be passed off as genuine sea glass however with respect to “creative expression” I can finally transform all the “backwoods” & “slurry glass” I’ve collected into beautiful works of art.☀️ Finally, I’m thinking the “Iron out” powder with hot water would clean that Fort Bragg glass, please let me know if it works! I appreciate this very very much Lexus!💫 Thanks so much for enjoying all my videos! 🌅 Hugs to you and your fiancé as well! 🧡🧡

Of course its up to personal preference, but rock tumbling sea glass, while making a frost effect, is a different effect to what the ocean does & is refered to as tumbled glass, not sea glass. You can tell the difference simply by running a finger over it. Tumbled glass is smooth as silk, while actual sea glass has a rough texture. Personally I feel tumbling sea glass to remove dirt is a fools errand. Its removing all those years of natural patina along with the dirt. Id try other cleaning methods or leave it as is

Hi there Rachel! I understand your dislike for tumblers and how they are often used to deceive in the sea glass world.💯 In context of the video, I’m using a tumbler for 6 hours to clean sea glass which has spent decades tumbling in the ocean to perfection, however picked up impurities which are impossible to clean with chemicals. (A single decade consists of over 87,000 hours). I truly believe creative expression should have no limits or labels.🌅 As long as one is happy where their heart leads them, they should be left to do as they please, and not be frowned upon, or judged.💯 10-15 years ago, I felt just as you do with respect to a rock tumbler however am glad to of evolved my mentality and outlook on life but completely understand where you stand.
