I spent a week by myself in Mykonos last summer and it was very relaxing, which I needed. What I didn’t expect though, was that one of the beaches I stayed at (closest to the town), would have tons of sea glass scattered throughout the sand. It ended up being a huge blessing because it gave me something to keep my mind on other than “everyday life” and added a sense of adventure and excitement to a place that was indescribably beautiful, with the best beaches Ive ever been in (clothing optional, sandy beaches w/ waves, secret coves, beautiful cliffs, and dramatic shorelines, awesome diversity for people watching, water was perfectly refreshing without being too warm or too cold, and incredible sunsets). Now I have to add sea glass hunting to my preferred beach vacation spots 😂🤪. Anyways, I was the only one that seemed to have any interest in the sea glass’ existence. I would lay out in the sun for a bit, but continually be drawn to walk the shore line and scan the piles of pebbles. One day, a waiters at the beach restaurant even asked me what I was doing/looking for out there… I brought home several ziplock bags full of tile fragments and sea glass and other ocean trinkets; but I wondered if I was silly for treasuring these little sea baubles… However, after finding your channel and others like yours, I feel better about being thrilled by my discoveries. Of course, I AM an archaeologist (specializing in the Maya) but due to a back surgery I have been unable to work. I guess some of us are just passionate about, and thrilled by, finding traces of the past; enjoying the process of uncovering, as well as learning what we can from them… and it’s just SO much more exciting (and enjoyable) when the artifacts come to you- instead of hiding a foot underground in a mosquito & Jaguar infested, 95 degree, humid, jungle…that’s a 3 hr bus ride down a bumpy dirt road, then a two hr car ride to the airport, and another 3 hr trip on an airplane away… haha. Funny thing is-the most exciting and important thing I’ve ever found underground is a piece of obsidian… And it was about the size of one of those Seaglass fragments you regularly pick up 🤦🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️😂 The importance of the find was was that it was found in a commoner’s household trash, and the nearest volcano was hundreds and hundreds of miles away & that area was also controlled by the Aztecs, which meant that the Maya of Deep South Belize were doing an enormous amount of trade through extensive market systems and trade routes with neighboring civilizations. Pretty cool- but I actually get to keep the sea glass that I find…

I absolutely loved reading of your Archaeological work, accidental discovery of sea glass and how much you enjoyed collecting it while appreciating its cultural & historical value.🌅 I remember my first day of college when the Archaeology professor gave his opening talk. “Archaeology isn’t exciting, most of your time is spent doing research. One day, you might find a pottery shard or if you’re extremely lucky, an intact vessel. You’ll write numerous papers on it and it may become your life’s work.” Your Obsidian sounds marvellous to me. To walk in the footsteps of our ancestors enhances my appreciation for the struggles and successes of every generation which came before. Me, And also gives me sincere gratitude for what every day holds.💫 I hope you enjoyed my video and only wish I could go on an expedition with you! I’m no stranger to mosquito nexts…Jaguars?
