This is my first Nina video. Wow a little more than 1 1/2 minutes. You cut to the chase, wrap it up and it’s done. Respectable and very respectful of our time. Thanks much

Thank you Nina for these wonderful tips! I use baking soda to clean my stovetop (and SO many other things) but NEVER thought to use it to ‘de-grease’ & refresh my silicone mats - I am most definitely trying this right now! (PS… I found your channel by doing a search for “best way to clean & store silicone baking mats”) 😊

Love the drying tip! I use baking soda for so much around the house. Works wonders on my glass top stove (ughhhh...it was here the house when I bought it..but we make due! Lol) I will need to give this try now on my mats too! Thanks!

I drape mine over whatever dishes are in the top rack of the dishwasher and run it. They're so slippery, they come clean even without full exposure to the spray. I hang them up like laundry.

Thanks..I was actually looking how to clean my new baking counter prep mat. No flour needed…rolling dough won’t stick. It’s about 2 1/2’ long and 1 1/2’ high. But I was wondering best way to clean and your method will work just fine. I’m newbie baker but I want to bake bread..😄
@ninainthekitchen145511 ай бұрын
Baking is magical. You put some glop into the heated box. Out comes a pie, cake, cookies, pastry, and of course breads. I was just speaking with my niece about this. When you make bread ( even if you don't think that it's a good loaf ), it will always taste better than store bought breads. Happy baking!

@@ninainthekitchen1455 thanks..you know my Mom baked everything! With six kids she had to..but she truly loved it. Bread, rolls, pies, cakes…all beautiful. Prettiest lemon meringue you’ll ever see. She often chuckled that since I was the oldest girl and I was her helper she ruined baking for me as I was the clean up helper…of a room full of flour and dishes! I didn’t help bake. But I didn’t mind…I don’t know why. Just liked helping her. But oddly I love to cook. Cookbooks are my passion. So now I’m going to bake bread! 😄

@judypasqualone3819 I love to hear the kitchen memories from childhood. I was the youngest and was given jobs like using the food mill to remove tomato seeds for spaghetti sauce. That's why I bake. No one ever stopped me from making pies etc. And it satisfied my sweet tooth. 😋 Thanks for writing 💞

Nina, Here's my lazy person's way...I roll them up and put each one by itself in one of the silverware compartment of my dishwasher and wash the load as usual. (My silverware compartment is removable and sits on the bottom rack of my dishwasher, so I don't know how this method would do with a different configuration.) They come up clean and un-gunked. I dry them the same way you do. I love silicone mats!

I never thought of the lower dishwasher rack. I have rolled them over the upper rack, but they take up too much space. I will give your way a try. Thanks Tammi !

I wash it on the upper rack and used your towel method to dry it. I went one better, I flipped the mat over and rolled it again. It works like a charm. Thanks for the tip Nina 🤓😎🤗

Great tip about the baking soda...but I never soak food items in my sink because my sink is not sterile. I wonder if I can put it into my dishwasher after it soaks?
@ninainthekitchen14553 жыл бұрын
Yes, silicone mats can go into the dishwasher. I use a bleach soloution to disinfect the sink.

I keep a large strong magnetic clip on my fridge for the mats. When the front side is dry, I turn it over so the part against the fridge can dry or I put a couple of fridge decorations under the mat to keep it from sticking to the fridge when wet.

Than you for the tip Mam. I have a question... Can I lay a silicon mat on a tray covered with aluminum foil and bake? is it safe..

Yes, that's a great idea, and I can't think of a reason not to do it. Now, thank you for that tip!

I've never used the silicone mats. I just always use parchment paper or aluminum foil, depending on what I'm baking. Are they that much better, or is it just that they're reusable that makes them good?
@ninainthekitchen14555 жыл бұрын
In my opinion silicone mats seem to insulate better than parchment paper, and they are reusable, they are also easy to just slip into a pan. The truth is that I use both and I really couldn't tell you why but I do like having the option. The mats can be costly so of course that is a consideration. The best option is always the cost per use factor. If you do a lot of baking then you may want to consider the mats.

NINA!! YOU ARE MY HERO!!! All of my silicone mats have gotten gummy. I didn't want to throw them out, because they don't exactly give them away! So finding this video was a Godsend!! For the dark green ones for dehydrators... do you know if they will stain &/or retain the flavor of things like liquid smoke, worcestershire sauce, hot sauces or BBQ sauce? I'm wanting to try dehydrating these kinds of things to make powders, without ruining them. Thanks in advance & again, for THIS video. (I subbed BEFORE I even watched this one!) Yaaay!😁 God bless you & yours 🙏
@ninainthekitchen14552 жыл бұрын
Hi Sandi, I'm not sure that I understand your problem with dehydrator mats. The only dehydrator mats that I am aware of are more like a screen than a mat. For a job like that I would make a paste with baking soda and water, then a fine brush, something like an old toothbrush to scrub them. A pastry chef/friend of mine uses some mats just for savory foods, and other mats just for sweets. I am too frugal to spend on that many mats. When you can start to smell food on the mats, that is when I recommend using this cleaning method. Cleaning your meds with this technique brings them back to feeling like a brand-new mat, but even when they're new, silicone mats always have a little gummy feeling to them. They do get worse as they get used. I hope this solves your problem. Please let me know how this works out for you. 💕

@@ninainthekitchen1455 will do. Thanks for the suggestion. The mats I'm talking about are a green silicone flexible mat with a lip on them to keep more liquid-y (?) things contained. Just fyi. Thanks again.

@@ninainthekitchen1455 do you ever get grease built onto the mat? I would love to find a way to get them out
@ninainthekitchen14553 жыл бұрын
@@ThaliaEatsDonuts okay, I am channeling chicken grease with some crusty bits. Smear Dawn dish detergent directly onto your mat. Put that into a pan or sink, then pour enough boiling water over the mat to cover. Let it sit until the water becomes warm enough to handle, then the grease should wipe right off. After that, try the method in the video. Between the two treatments, your mats should be perfect.
