I spray W-D40 and let it sit for a couple of min then wipe it clean. Plus it will lubricate the pole at the bottom and makes the door glide better too.

Never use WD-40 because it contains oil which never dries. After few weeks it will attract the dirt again and look blackish in color.

This worked perfectly, and I didn't have anything left behind (previous commenter, Amelia, must of used too much soda). All other video's required products and trip to store. I can now open my door with a few fingers using products already in my home. Took about 20 minutes to do entire track, door open then closed. Note. I used wet rag to clean up excess dirt first. Thank you for video.

Sadly with the mood swings of mother nature where I live your method doesn't work for me. If I scrubbed with a dry wire brush first it might. Our weather goes from dry, windy, and dust flying everywhere to humid the next day. The dirt and dust gets really bad in the exterior tracks. I've used vinegar to soften it up but will try sprinkling baking soda first. I love the lifting power of the two combined. Hydrogen peroxide is great too.

A steam cleaner and a small shop vac is really effective for cleaning window sills. The steam gets into all the cracks and the shopvac picks up the dirt and water, use a brush to loosen the dirt if the track is particularly dirty. Highly recommend getting a good steam cleaner it's a very useful and flexible tool and you can use less chemicals if you use steam.

after cleaning a good way to make your door slide smoothly is to take a candle and rub it over the tracks (top and bottom). Do this every 3 mints and your door will glide easily. do not use oils (like WD40) on tracks.

You gotta add oil for lubricating the slide door after cleaning! A tiny amount goes long way!! Or else it would be hard to slide door after too many times of cleaning!! BTW nice and simple video. When there are kids around its better not to use too many chemical products. Better to go with baking powder ,vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, lemon etc

I Agree, soaking is too messy and can lead to mildew. Start by removing sliding window off the track to clear the WHOLE track , vacuumed loose dirt ( use dry brush to loosen hardened dirt). Wipe with damp cloth. Before reinstalling the window back in the track, vacuum the fussy trim at bottom on the outer frame, it collects lot of dirt.

Hello dear, what's the brand for hydrogen peroxide? I see many options in Amazon but would be easier if you share the one you have been using

Hello, Sorry for the delay in my response. Actually I bought mine at a local store, maybe Walmart or CVS.. Brand should not matter, just get the basic one , you should be fine.

It would seem a bit smarter to use some type of brush before using the rag just to loosen up some of the more stubborn debris...by the way,a very informative and helpful video, thanks!

There's a large part of me wondering... how long is it going to take before her sill dries out so bad it starts cracking and letting water seep into and under her floor? Soap, water, a long bristled hand broom n a rag works too.

Only if one hv been house cleaning regularly, there won't be that much dirt, esp stubborn stains, to clean. A vacuum cleaner is a good cleaning aid to clean the tracks.

I like your method, but I just took a damp rag and scrubbed it, and for the hard areas, I put a rag over a screwdriver and scrubbed, and for the window weep holes, I would put some baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

I would think that baking soda and vinegar would work fine too on this. I also throw out my old baking soda with some white vinegar into our toilets periodically. It helps naturally to keep the pipes clear.
