How to clean throttle body on 2012 Chevy Equinox AWD 2.4L

I have a 2013 equinox. I followed this video step by step and it worked! My issue was that while idling my rpm's were dropping quite low. My throttle body was much dirtier than this. Completely black. Thank you for this video❤

I’m not a mechanic and don’t know what codes your mechanic is getting but if it’s a faulty part, cleaning won’t fix it. . However it’s an easy clean. If you can find out what codes it’s throwing, then do some research- you’ll find your answers. It’s an easy part to replace as well, if you do the job yourself you’ll likely save you a decent amount of $$$. Good luck.

It can be low/poor idle- especially after starting the vehicle (my case), stalling, and/or stalling on acceleration. Hope that helps. Best!

@@zofaa1252 this also happened to me but cleaning the throttle didn’t help this issue. Turns out it was a faulty O2 sensor that I installed previously. It was a very rough idle while in park from a cold start. Would occasionally cause the vehicle to stall out. But I replaced with an OEM sensor and it was fine. There is also currently a recall on both O2 sensors and the cat converters. Just an FYI. Good luck on your project.

if you remove your throttle body when you put it back on you will now have to take it to the dealer to have it reprogrammed and calibrated with your EC unit. Newer cars their throttle body are electric not cable driven so soon as you disconnect it you will have to have it reprogrammed you must clean your throttle body in place it is possible otherwise when you take it off you're going to pay a lot of money to a dealer to reprogram it and calibrate it back with your EC units

I had no issues with mine after disconnecting and cleaning. From my research if you do have idle issues after replacing there is a re-learn process you can conduct to get it calibrated. But that is usually only the issue if you open the butterfly with electronic components still connected. It is also dangerous to clean with electronics connected. If it opens and closes on your finger it’s not going to be pretty.

But be sure to remove the negative battery terminal before you remove electrical components from the TB.

My rpms were increased slightly after cleaning the tb. I fixed this issue by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery then the throttle body position sensor for about 5 minutes. Reconnected everything, problem solved

Easiest way is turn the key to on, not run, have a buddy push down on the gas pedal and clean it. Easy peasy!

Rough idle. My TB ended up not being my issue though. I replaced an O2 sensor about a month before this with an aftermarket part. It wasn’t defaulting the computer enough to throw codes. Switched the O2 sensor with OEM and it fixed my rough idle.

Dustin Oxley no I was just doing some maintenance. But cleaning this may (probably not likely) resolve your p0228 code. Sounds like it's more than likely a faulty pedal position sensor or throttle position sensor. However I would first check your wiring for these sensors and make sure there isn't a short. @@HomegrownHowTo awesome wow thank you for the quick reply I usually never get a response when I ask a question on a video. We just financed a 2012 Equinox get 10 minutes off the lot and the check engine light comes on. The dealership is acting like they had no idea, but its obvious the battery was unhooked to clear the codes since the clock and settings were all off in the car. They won't help at all and just keep denying anything was wrong with the vehicle. That's not the only code we are getting either it's also pulling codes P0113 and P0325. And then some weird code B2aaa.

Dustin Oxley sounds like a sketchy dealer. I hope you get it returned. I'd threaten them with bad reviews and litigation. P0013 & p0014 are both easy repairs but a common issue. If you happen to be stuck with the vehicle check and see if yours is burning oil. Mine was burning about 1.5 qt every 1k miles.and there is a big extended warranty to replace pistons and piston rings at no cost for this issue. I really hope you can get your money back.

@@HomegrownHowTo yep pretty much so and we avoided buy here pay here for this exact reason. This was a huge dealership too with like 4 car lots side by side. Pretty sure we are stuck with it now because it was sold as is. The financing company made us purchase and $1650 2 year/24k mile warranty but upon researching the company I find nothing but horrible 1 star reviews all saying they deny almost every claim. Not sure about the oil yet as we haven't had it long enough yet, guess time will tell.

My only concerns are you pushed open the butterfly with the electrical still connected to the throttle body or got some of the electrical components wet while cleaning it. There is a throttle re-learn you could look up that may also fix the issue. But I haven’t heard of your specific issue before.

It can if you push open the throttle. If you don’t push it open you’ll be fine.
