I love that we are finally phasing out single use plastics here in Canada and other countries. It always shocks me to see all the plastic water and pop bottles. Here those are worth money (as are milk cartons, juice boxes etc). You take em in and you get a few cents per bottle/carton (up to 25 cents per, depending on size). A couple bags of them adds up quick for some extra gas money. There is an extra environent charge at the grocery til though, so actually we are just getting our deposit back, but its not as noticeable, when its only a few cents per bottle/carton when buying. A plastic bottle return is a small step to incentivising them not ending up in rivers etc., but along with bans on single use plastics, better recycling methods, more education on waste footprints per person, and more and more innovation, I hope we get there faster.

Hemp plastics or biodegradable plastic should be invented. Also our environmental education of our Southern neighbors sucks. What have we done to help Mexico and Central America, its looks like nothing until now. Oh well ,that's plastics over the rivers and the beautiful Caribbean Ocean, While the US senate and representatives argue over who's worse ,The Southern world has almost turned into a giant garbage heap. This is such an important project and needs support and funding on a massive scale. Its potential to improve environments and change lives is fantastic. Having said that the channel currently has less than 500k subscribers which is incredibly disappointing. The solution shouldn’t be that the government and the consumers pay for the waste management, but the companies producing the waste. So for every kg of plastics produced the producing company should put 1$ in a UN fund to combat the waste. If a company recycles plastics or reuses them they get one dollar back for every kg of plastic they reuse/recycle. It gives an incentive to produce less plastic waste and to buy good with much less plastic, because those will be cheaper.

It's a shame that government doesn't take more action to protect citizens from this waste. Corporations reap insane profits while average citizens suffer the hazards or polluted rivers. Instead of an after the fact clean up, Mega international corporations should be held accountable for the waste they generate. This concept is well known as "cradle to cradle" manufacturing, where every product has a pre-planned life cycle just as nature does.

Forget government, most of that trash is from people themselves. Government is merely an extension of the will of the people (if you're not stuck in Russia, NK or PRC). If you live in an area by a river, it is your choice to make a change in your community and organize a united cleaning front to protect your waterways.

@@notmyducks3 Corporations were the ones who first pushed people to throw away plastic. When single use plastic was first introduced, people didn't throw it away because that's not how they thought. They had to advertise to people the idea of throwing it away. Now a lot of plastic isn't even recyclable. So even if we don't throw it in a river and recycle it, most of that isn't recycled. Recycling was also sold by corporations when people saw the litter and pollution affects of plastic, even though recycling is in large part a façade. So, then think about these people in poorer countries along these rivers. When did plastics get introduced there? Maybe a generation ago you could throw a lot of things into the river because they were biodegradable. Now with plastic and the influx of cheap throwaway material/products (also the fault of corporations and government) the problem is too big for any one person to change. Sure don't throw it in the river, but these places don't have the infrastructure for the amount of waste produced, not just because of habit, but also because of how corporations make and package products. And so many things have steered away from locally sourced to being shipped in via mass production. Why does a poor country have so many plastic water bottles? They can't drink water from local sources? Could they once upon a time? Can they not do that now because of run off from factories that produce fast fashion and cheap products that Western Corporations/governments outsourced to poor countries that have lax regulations that wouldn't be allowed in Western countries? I'm all for personal responsibility. But let's not deflect or diminish the impact of the current system of function of things which were not individually decided by people, but occurred because of big moves by corporations and governments.

A great mass solution is a total transition to biodegradable packaging materials, but they require more plant components, which will stimulate a significant increase in the cultivation of crops such as corn, rice, which consume a lot of water, so we need to really diversify approaches in creating packaging materials, perhaps from mushrooms or algae

It isn't just consumers who bear the responsibility for choking the world's waterways with plastic. A LARGE part of the responsibility rests upon the shoulders of a handful of mega corporations who continue to churn out - with zero regard for the environment - millions of bottles of packaged drinking water and other items. If your business model rests upon polluting the world with plastic then you should also have to pay for its cleanup.

The way I see it being fixed is time and awareness of the problem: When a newborn baby enters the world, they absorb information about how their parents and other family and community members handle trash and recyclable items. They therefore have this imprinted on their memory, and whatever trash handling methods their surroundings are using is going to be carried on with them for the rest of their lives. It is therefore imperative that from a very young age, that children learn, sooner rather than later, how trash and recyclables should be handled. If they can be made aware of the fact that that it should go in the proper bin, then that will help matters greatly. The other part of the equation is to reduce the number and type of recyclable items. This is going to take about as long as it takes a baby to adulthood, possibly longer. Industry awareness of what environmental impact their plastics have on the environment, and handling procedures implemented by government agencies on all levels will help ensure that industries are going to have places for their waste stream to go to, instead of ending up in a waterway, ocean, or landfill. It takes longer for industry to change, because it is dependent on what trash and recyclable handling procedures the people running those industries have been imprinted from birth with. It will take a while for them to get around to fixing the problem, could be 20 or 30 years, possibly more. But eventually it will be solved, and in due time waste will no longer be a problem. Individuals have to do their part for this to happen. Automated sorting systems can only sort waste and recyclables if they get fed them. Transportation and sorting technologies will have to keep up with the demand for sorting and processing of both waste and recycling streams.

I'm old enough to remember when we used paper bags at the grocery store and drank our soda from glass bottles that could be turned in and reused or maybe cans (which can also be recycled). Ketchup, mustard, salad dressing and other condiments were also bottled in glass. Sure we used tons of plastic in a variety of different ways when I was growing up but that use has grown exponentially since then especially in the area of one time use plastic. Use of plastic to such a degree increases our dependence on the petrochemical industry and further depletes a resource that is finite. The packaging it replaced was all reusable or recyclable in ways that plastic will never be.

It just seems so easy here in The Great Lakes region because we have no excuses like so many of these stories around the world describe no formal systems of refuse collection. Let's go to the source, the household. When I was young, your milk and soda was delivered to our house each morning in glass containers. So each night we would place the empties on the front steps and each morning we would bring in the refilled containers. The milk and soda companies would sterilize the containers and reuse them daily. Didn't use plastic so there was never an pollution issue. Some of the old ways are best ways.

Why are the governments of the countries especially where the river plastic pollution is at peaks and effecting human wealth in innumerable ways to buy this product for cleaning their rivers? I am from India and I hope our government officials watched this video's and order this machine from Baltimore and installed in every polluted rivers of India for clearing the plastic waste. The inventor of this machine has done a big favour on the modern society on how to discard waste in an effective way through this invention. I hope he is recognised and rewarded by his government for his big contribution on how to tackle the most relevant plastic waste management in the modern world.

I just can’t believe how much plastic we use…what a shame. Just simply stopping the use water bottles and other easily replaced products will make a huge difference! Also nobody should be eating bags of chips to begin with, so let’s just stop doing that too

These are all still very small scale solutions. I kinda chuckle everytime I hear that we need communities to start putting the work. How about we shift the responsability on the real culprits, which are the packaging industry. Coca Cola has bought the rights to so many rivers in the developing world and instead of people having direct access to clean water they now have to buy bottled water from Coca Cola. In my opinion the Coca Cola foundation should do a hell of a lot more when sponsoring these cleanup projects. They could easily donate 100 of these Interceptors world wide

Absolutely! These multi-billion dollar companies have shifted the blame and responsibility onto us and don't do anything about reducing waste because it's not profitable. They won't start doing anything until governments around the world start pressuring them to take action and that's why these companies need to be heavily taxed.

Theres a hydrogen company which indicates they can derive hydrogen from nearly any water source. Imagine combining that tech with waste reclamation as described. Hydrogen fuel and technology might be a profound game changer. It could make possible that farms could get established in the Sahara.

Most of our waste problem begins at the beginning of productions, most of the products are packed is plastic and so called (eco friendly)plastic. And then more packaging around that package, sometimes 3 types of packaging for just 1 product, that needs to change. And as consumer we need to be aware of what we really need , most basic needs are a roof over our heads/place to sleep , food . The rest is waste we don't need.

Biodegradable is a bit of a controversial solution. The thing about plastics are that the vast majority of them are never recycled and instead enter landfills if not the environment. This means that any bio plastics that enter landfills will not break down or become methane instead. Some biodegradable plastics will also break down into micro plastics..

This is why more wood products are important. Napkins, paper bags, carboard cups, and other paper products can naturally breakdown in the environment. Instead of plastic bottles and plastic bags staying there for years. Also, just send a big incinerator boat out into the ocean and burn all the trash. Easier than shipping it back to mainland.

Cool ideas! Sadly it's almost too little too late. Now if there could be a process the plastics between 1 & 2s from the rest that would be great. Recycle the 1s & 2s then put the rest into biofuel generators.

You need to search out the thousands of ways people are fighting for a future. Plant trees, pick up trash on your own streets before it enters waterways. Small acts multiplied by billions can and do make a difference.

I don't understand this fanatical focus on plastic when there are many substances in these trash flows far more dangerous. Battling plastic is nice, but the real battle is better waste management of ALL disposed materials. We consider items trash when we individually have no use for said item. We need better understanding of how the materials we use can be channeled to re-use once we are done with them.

@@ds975 Plastic is what we SEE in the water. And FRANKLY, it is significant problem. I just think some of the locations featured in exposes like this are uber-focused on removing water bottles and toys. The chemical pollution happening in these FRESH water systems is being caused by chemicals. A few nitwits dropping plastic bottles is not nearly as big of an issue as the amount of chemical waste being disposed legally into rivers and streams in industrialized nations on a daily basis.

The Ocean CleanUp obviously gets most the media attention since it's a large organization, but all of these individuals who founded their Orgs and also the volunteers and even paid staff are all amazing human beings. I try to volunteer with a few beach cleanups annually and a lot of our offroad groups will spend weekends cleaning up the desert OHV areas that we frequent to prevent them from closing down due to negligence and dumping. Unfortunately the GOVERNMENTS of many countries just don't do anywhere near enough (especially over in India, Guatemala, and other areas) which is the bigger problem. I wish all the success you can achieve with all these organizations who are trying their best to do what the politicians won't do

It's great that these systems exist, but they need to find a way to keep the organic material flowing downstream. Waterlogged material like this is a great carbon sink that can be stored indefinitely once it reaches the ocean and sinks. Floating material is also a great nursery for planktonic larvae, offering cover for fry.
