Great explanation and demonstration! Keep it up and do more things for the Z18XER engine. Question: I have a Saturn Astra (same engine) and I just started getting some "diesel sound" from the engine. Any idea what to do? Some people are saying it may be the lifters.

Might be the camshaft gear adjusters. Pretty common fault with these engines. You will find videos with more explanation here on YT.

How many numbers should we use the outer torx?

I dropped the bolts - both of them (went completely against your advice) front one and back one in the engine compartment and couldn't find them for ages. 😣The person who had the car before me must have replaced the front solenoid screw with a different screw because it was a normal torx head (not reverse torx) and it was shorter they may have stuck it up with some kind of bonding glue.😖 Any way I thought the screw was tight I was careful but when I started the car unbeknown to me the solenoid shot out.😬 The fan belt, timing belt radiator and half the engine were covered in oil before I realised. I sat there gently revving thinking oooh this sounds better (maybe engines sound better with no oil in them) The oil has now started to eat my tarmac drive. 😭 The thread was now completely stripped and the car was left unable to move for a week because there are no shops open (virus)😷and I had to wait for a tap and tap wrench to come from ebay as well as a replacement screw. 😡😡LOL The funny thing is they really didn't need doin' My next project is to replace the brakes pads and rotors easy😇......or is it!😈 I am seriously thinking of filming this one. By the time I finish the job there will be material there that may get me 2 million views Lol😁 Anyway thanks for the videos subbed because they are really clear and informative.

hopeful this time you forget the spanner inside :) just joking, I went through the same mistake, went to wash my engine to find an oil leak, ending up with lots of issue one after another, gearbox failed, cooling fan now coming on in a full speed once the key is at on position and never shut until after a minute of engine off, 02 sensor high voltage, engine variable camshaft position P0011 lots of things and I did not even need to wash the engine

My car with same engine was sluggish and had random loss of power from a stand still till the car got to over 2500rpm then would run fine till the next stand still in traffic. Had rattle on start up too. I struggled like mad to get these solenoids out as was told possibly is them. Both looked fine at a glance. I removed the filters from around the edges and threw them away like instructed. I did not remove the filters from the ends! I Cleaned them out with Wd-40 like he does in the video and refitted the solenoids. The rattle has pretty much gone and the car is very noticeably quicker. I mean it’s nippy and feels like an 1.8 Sri now! I’m yet to have the car go into a no power situation again but I’m hopeful this was the problem. Believe it or not i was getting no more than 28mpg no matter how I drove it since buying it. And now it’s funny because I’m getting 44mpg at least. It even gets over 60mpg running about. It’s great 👍🏻 if I get any problems now I will just replace them for OEM ones. Also I’ve had no engine light on or any codes stored.

Update. Car started playing up again. Idle rough and loss of power. I’ve removed and fitted new oem solenoids! I’ll report back with any info. Car idles near perfect since new ones fitted and power throughout the gears and revs is good

juuppi juu hi, I ordered a new set of spark plugs. Bosch plugs and also genuine solenoids. I cleaned my solenoids but it didn’t stop the power loss or bad mpg. Was a waste of time. Since changing the solenoids the mpg went from 28-30 up to 34+ on long runs I’m getting like 45mpg+ my range was down to 280 miles a tank and now it’s 470 miles to a tank. It’s amazing. I bought 2 genuine GM solenoids from eBay for 45£ (GENUINE Vauxhall Zafira Vectra Signum Camshaft Valve Position Solenoids x2 - NEW) and (4 x Bosch 0242229699 Spark Plug Brand New OE Quality Plugs FQR8LEU2) the writing in brackets are directly from the listings off eBay. My car is the 1.8 Sri z18xer engine. Just copy and paste the bits in brackets in eBay search to get the same parts. Well worth it. My car use to vibrate through the steering wheel too. It doesn’t do that anymore either. I’m saving no end of money now as I’m getting at least 100 miles out of a quarter of a tank now too. Vauxhall site recommended them spark plugs for my engine. I had nkg plugs and they were a year old. I changed the plugs before as I was having hesitation problems but still had it with the nkg plugs. Since I put the Bosch plugs in and changed the solenoids it’s like a new car 👍🏻 so smooth and no power loss as of yet and it’s been a while now

@@SaucyBegger25 Hello. Our engine f16d4, cruze 2013 MY. we have done headgasket lately and timing belt change. Local garage destroyed exhaust camshaft when he forgot to remove camshaft locking tool while turning engine, I had to help them to find new exhaust camshaft while they reinstalled everything back. When we finaly got car back our mpg has been very bad. first i thought that they have failed on timing marks but they seems to be ok, I have tryed to change spark plugs ( Denso K20TT ) and new ignition coil pack but no changes to MPG. Im running out of ideas, i have feeling that they have destroyed VVT sprockets but i dont have any clue how to test this because engine doesnt rattle. Maybe last change is to try this VVT solenoid trick + maybe bosch sparkplugs? they did change oil cooler to but it didnt last long, maybe 1month and it started leak again, so now this is on project atm do. Here is googedrive link from our engine which was ripped totaly apart on this garage who destroyed camshaft and did whole repair, do you notice something there? Allso there is few photos of timing marks how they should be and different manual pages. ( drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TrYcSc_KmPwGlyDkxIa0t07JPZi8ocma?usp=sharing ) ps. Forgot to mention, went to MOT to check emission and they was all fine!

juuppi juu i think they might of Damaged a sensor? Doubt it’s the solenoids if it was running fine before they stripped it down. They definitely needed the locking tool to take the engine apart. Could of damaged the vvt gears ⚙️⚙️ seems strange how all of a sudden you’ve got bad mpg after having all that work done. I would definitely have a different garage plug a diagnostics tool up to your car and check the values of all your sensors as they could of quite easily damaged even your coolant temperature sensor and that can also affect your mpg. They are cheap to replace but need original parts as cheap ones are no good. Never buy cheap parts. You could try cleaning your solenoids but I don’t think it’s that after what you’ve said. Engine looks ok to be fair. I’m going with a sensor has failed from the strip down and rebuild. If your mpg is 28mpg or lower it’s worth just getting it plugged in as it’s costing you money anyway in fuel.

Hi all I managed to clean the front solenoid but the back one would move in and out about 15mm but would not come out ! Any ideas why ? I tried to knock it out with mole grips and a hammer but unknowingly split the solenoid so it leaked oil everywhere when I took it for a drive. Can anyone advise me how to remove the solenoid now the outer piece has snapped off ?
