The thing is, your 'dirty' bong is cleaner than the vast majority of the bongs I have seen in real world usage. A MUCH more gunked up starting point would be more practical and helpful, since I doubt those of us with an issue regarding dirty bongs have kept ours anywhere near as sparkly clean as your starting point.

My piece is some 9" tall with a large reservoir. 1/2 c. alcohol and ~2Tbsp. kosher salt cleans it nicely. I put the stuff into it, plug the holes and shake it up. Let sit an hour, and it is clean.

If you just add a bit of oil to the water, the bong does not even get that dirty. The bad stuff is trapped in the oil and floats there. And leaves the bong once you rinse it.

Like a few here, when the residue hits a certain level, even if I shook it for two hours with 91% & sea salt, it never, ever comes out this clean. Gonna try 99% which is why I came here to see if that will make a substantial difference. We’ll see. I know if I never had let it get real bad, the process here will work. But I need that initial “eazy off” solution so I can start regular maintenance. That’s what I’m lookin for.

I’ve found that 420 works ok on pipes etc.. but if your bong has twist , bends etc.. not so well . I’ve tried dawn dish soap mixed with distilled vinegar worked well , let it soak over night . I’m going to try this fore sure .

I was hoping to see some way of cleaning it other than the obvious. The only way I’ve ever been able to actually clean my bong is to get a dish pan from a hardware store. Fill it up with a large can of lacquer thinner or paint thinner and let the bong soak for a day or two then bottle brush to clean it as much as possible if it needs more soaking, leave it for another day or two. It’s the only way I’ve ever been able to get my bong actually clean. Just make sure you have a back up bong.

You know if you heat up a little iso alcohol for about 20 seconds in the microwave. Then add it to the ziplock and bong with a little course salt. You won't have to ever do any soaking or scrubbing. Add a couple drops of dish soap too. To get that glass real sparkley clean. All that soaking and scrubbing doesn't need to be done if you clean your bong regularly

do NOT use salt water for ur sesh… that will leave salt stains on the base of ur bong and you will have to buy a particularly expensive cleaner to get it off… what you should use though is distilled water, it keeps ur bong clean and resin and ash won’t stick to the walls of ur bong, you can purchase distilled water at pretty much any grocery store/gas station for under $2 per 4L

My own tip is used coffee grounds. They don't fully replace a solvent but if you use a lot with hot water, they're such an effective abrasive that they power through most material from builtup gunk to stains. And they don't dissolve like salt, and you probably already generate a bunch and just throw them out anyway. Most importantly for me is even if they don't fully clean everything, they reset the off flavours that seem to mess with the taste and effects of my weed. Only trick is you can't dump them down the drain.

The trick is to pre-soak the bong with hot water to get things pliable, and use a *lot* of grounds with just enough water to mobilize them.
