Ex-car mechanic here, normally we don’t recommend hanging your callipers by the brake line. Instead we find a spot, hang it with a bungee or zip tie. Especially avoid doing it if your car is older with crusty lines. Edit: Ok from the comments, I can say that there’s enough people hanging their callipers by the brake line, it seems fine. But as to not cause extra fatigue, I would still use me trusty bungee. Cause I’m ✨extra✨ like that. Stay civil boys and gals.

Back when brake lines were rubber. Nowadays, brake lines are made from braided SS, Kevlar, or even carbon fiber. No issues hanging your calipers. Even the pros in the paddocks do the same.

Yeah, try that on shitty and dusty roads. calipers with steel pistons rust and gunk up with brake dust when not taken care of especially non radial brakes. Regularly checking the brakes every 3 months does the trick on non radial brakes ensuring the slider pins free of corrosion.

2016 BMW R1200RT 80,000+ and it happened to me right after I stopped at a intersection. I pulled out and the bike felt hard. I slowed down to pull over and the bike stopped half way off the street. The front left caliper was locked up. Broke the bleeder loose and rode it back home. Tried to clean the piston but no luck. I had to replace them. I ended up rebuilding both side. Never had this happen to any of my other bike. Shit happens.

Never mind that he suggested pulling the brake lever with the caliper off and the pads out😂 all well and good until the piston pops out and the DIYer finds his/herself in a pickle. Also any anti-cease grease or release pin lubricant that would be there from the previous mechanic or dealership has now been washed off. So now you're introducing potential for rust and greater mechanical wear. This guy obviously isn't thinking about how dangerous this bit of misinformation could be.

When you use the brake lever to push the pistons out, you should have a right sized block of wood in between them. Without one, you run the risk that the pistons will come out unevenly, 3 of them could stay put and only 1 would move for example, particularly if they really are dirty.

There's actually a lube for around the piston boots and pad slides but over drying the rubber boots and seals around the caliper pistons isn't a good idea, it will be clean but the boots and seals will be cracked and falling apart and leaking😊I'm not saying don't clean them every once in a while but get the correct lubricant grease and reapply it afterwards to keep the seals and piston boots soft and pliable 😊

A lot of shops and racers use Simple Green put into a spray bottle which is also bio-degradeable. Then use a tooth brush to lightly scrub the caliper, pistons and pads. Then use a spray bottle of water to rinse off. Air blow dry if you have compressed air or go for a short ride. It is safe for o'rings. I have been using it for years and years.

@Andyyy982
@Andyyy982 7 ай бұрын
Don't do this. You rely on your brakes for safety. If you dont know what to do, take it to a mechanic or get your information from a credible source. The calipers are supposed to have a lubricant on the release pins to decrease mechanical wear, stop rust build-up and help the pads return to a neutral position. Also he's suggesting you pump the brakes with the pads out. On some calipers this can cause the piston to pop right out. If you don't know what you're doing, you're then in for a world of hurt. Also someone else suggested not leaving the caliper hanging by its brake line. While several people do this and have not had issues, its still the wrong way to do it and if you have any minor cracks in your brake line you're only going yo make things worse. Additionally it adds strain to a part that was never meant to experience any. Use common sense and vet your sources.

Cleaning that portion of the brake calipers aren’t going to do anything to stop or prevent a “caliper” from seizing. When a caliper seizes, it happens behind that rubber seal. Or it happens because the pad is not returning/sliding. Meaning the brake pad it self is seized in the bracket. However it’s still not a bad thing to clean like shown in this video. Yea I’m a Automotive tech of just about 20 years now. I’ve rebuilt both automotive and motorcycle calipers. Knowing how it works is knowing how it fails.

It's really not necessary, but if you do do it next time, put a thin piece of wood between the two caliper locations of the pistons so that if you press and you push the pistons out too far, you'll still be able to catch them it's really not necessary

What about the slider pins? Kind of important. You should also apply some kind of rust prohibitor and lube those pins. Bleed the entire brake system using fresh DOT 4 synthetic hydrophobic brake fluid. You're welcome.

There are no slider (lines) pins, it’s a monoblock fixed caliper. That’s why there are pistons on both sides.

I don’t do any of these things coz I live in Macau and we don’t really have a place to. But it’s good knowledge nonetheless.
