Most people believe that because washing machines are always in contact with water and clothes detergent, then they’re always clean. However, this is incorrect.
In fact, this household appliance we use so often is constantly moist and traps dirt and other harmful microorganisms that accumulate over time.
So what does this mean?
It means that your washing machine can both look dirty and be full of mildew, which has a very unpleasant odor. But you don’t have to let it reach this point before you do something about it. Cleaning your washing machine regularly will ensure that it stays clean and mildew free.
In today's video, we’re going to teach you a simple, cheap way to clean your washing machine.
This tip is mainly directed towards washing machines with the door on the front, where all of the dirt and mildew builds up.
Here’s what you need:
2 glasses of white vinegar;
1/4 of a cup of baking soda;
1/4 of a glass of water.
Begin by removing the rubber band that seals the door and wipe it clean with a damp cloth, doing the same on the door and drum, removing all visible dust and dirt.
Now mix the baking soda with the water and pour the mixture into the detergent compartment of the machine. Add the vinegar to the drum and start a normal washing cycle using hot water.
While the machine does all the work, you can wipe the outside of it using a soft cloth soaked in a vinegar and hot water mixture. After thoroughly cleaning the entire machine from the outside, wipeout down with a dry cloth. Once the cycle is over, you can clean the inside of the machine with a normal sponge or some steel wool while the drum is still warm. Clean the drum and the inner corners of the machine and door. Don’t forget to also clean the detergent compartment.
It is recommended that you do this at least once a month to keep your machine free of dirt and mildew.

As Nikki mentions leave the door open after using. Also remove and dry the detergent drawer. I do this after each load and never have issues with odors or mildew.

This is why I NEVER CLOSE my washing machine and dishwasher after use,the circulation of air prevents mildew and smell buildup. Learned that handy tip from my Mam 🙏🏼 I’ve never had a problem UNTIL I purchased a 2nd hand (but almost new) washing machine last year. The previous owner had obviously kept the door closed all the time,as it took me ages and a lot of washes to get rid of the mouldy smell!

I’m an appliance tech, so my advise is mostly for people that have a new front load washer. I always use hot for whites and run the clean washer cycle with no cleaners after a hot bleach wash. After done washing for the day wipe down the glass and all of the door seal including in the grove area where small items collect. Always leave the door open until the next wash day. If your door wants to stay open too far (LG) then you can get a couple suction cups with a string and use that to keep the door from opening too far. Oh and as for the soap just a couple table spoons and easy on the other additives. Also i use extra rinse on every load to be sure all the soap is gone. If your washer doesnt use hot water during a cycle like my stupid LG/Kenmore then do what i do. I put a garden hose splitter on the hot water and i put the washer in a clean cycle and after the washer drains the first time then starts to fill again i will stick the hot hose into the soap dispenser (remove liquid soap insert) and run the hot water till it fills enough to reach the bottom of the door. Then i let it do the rest. I never open the pump clean out at the bottom. Just keep your pockets empty and you will have no reason to mess with it and potentially create a leak. Now a days the only water efficiency washers that are any good are front loaders. Government is constantly interfering with how much water a washer can use for a cycle. If you want a great washer that uses water to clean your clothing then your only choice is a Speed Queen.

Great infomation,my washing machine has a button called self clean,i use this once a month the cycle takes about 1 and half hours and if u touch the door door its hot so it is boiling the water inside and it gets rid of smells and stains and smells fresh.

If you have a combination washer-drier (common here in UK) over time you will get a build-up of lint made from towel fluff, hair, soap scum etc (yum!) in the nooks and crannies all around the deep edges of the rubber seal, especially the small drainage slots right against the edge of the drum. A regular check of this (and leaving the door ajar) keeps things sweet.

I talk to a woman who works at an appliance store and they do home repairs too. She said there is always water present in the washing machine. I think it has something to do with priming the pump but I might be wrong on that. She leaving the lid or door open 24 hours after using will cut down on the mildew.

If you look at the boot or diaphragm many will have some oblong holes through them that go in towards the drum. These can get plugged with lint and debris. Carefully use something like a qtip to make sure these holes are open. They allow the water to drain out into the washer so it doesn't sit there and create science projects. Also some have a small hole about 5/16" in diameter. This also is a drain. I can easily get clogged especially with sand. If it is clear the easiest way to keep it clear is to take a piece tubing that fits snuggly into the hole. Mark one end as the clean end and give a quick hard blow like through a straw. You should hear the air and water blow out the other end. If it is blocked it is much trickier. It Involves digging it out. BE VERY CAREFUL BECAUSE YOU CAN PUT A HOLE IN THE LITTLE HOSE CONNECTED TO IT.

My electrolux washer has a cleaning cycle after about 15 wash cycles. I then use Tide front loader washer cleaner and wipe out the rubber boot and clean the glass of soap film. I use about a tablespoon of detergent for a full wash which helps cut down on soap film. Using more detergent is not necessary as the clothes tumble thru the soapy water.

best thing to do is leave the door open apparently but I've only just learnt this. mine was really mouldy which is why I looked at this. but none of the videos really show u the best way to clean up bad mould. best way I found to clean it is was to soak kitchen towel in neat bleach and stuff is around the rim of the washing machine leave it for hours or over night and it's gone. mine had 4 years of build up and it's pretty much disappeared I'm going to do a white vinegar wash to see if that helps but my washing machine doesnt smell like a damp shit heap now!

If you want the best results from a front loader with little to no mildew or sour smell then you must dry the inside door boot seal and drain the front tube after each day of use from day one! For best results try to drain the front tube when the rinse cycle is draining and during the spin cycle before the laundry finishes. The vibrations help to move the extra water settlement out of the machine (you will be surprised and amazed how much water will flow out so get a bucket ready. This water is what will settle and sour if you just leave it!) Also clean the washer filter weekly and wipe down the boot seal with bleach and run at least one bleach cycle weekly! And of course, try to use powder detergent and keep the door open if you can! Yes, these machine are more trouble than they are worth but you wanted it so you got to put the extra work into it to keep it clean! You can get lazy with these machines and you will eventually regret it even more than what you paid for the high maintenance bells and whistles waste of money! 😉

Baking soda and vinegar react to form carbon dioxide plus water. The CO2 bubbles may dislodge dirt particles. You can also use the combination to unblock a blocked drain. But you are correct. The mixture will form salt water but if you keep them separate and mix them in the washing machine the gas bubbles produced may have a cleaning effect

I clean mine after every load. Not like that but I wipe the crap out in between the rubber. Don't forget the OTHER rubber further inside of the machine. I have a new washer so there is a 3 hour cleaning cycle that tells you when it should be done. You do nothing. Just let it clean. And it works very well. I recently had a whole house water treatment system put in. It destroys a big portion of the chemicals put in our water. Cleanses the water. Since installing this, my washer no longer stinks. What does that tell us? Yep. Hard water smells really bad.
