After I've washed and rinse mine, I give it one final rinse with apple cider vinegar. It removes any soap residue left over without stripping the bristles. My boar bristle brush is from Vidal Sassoon but the method for cleaning it is the same. I love boar bristle brushes, I will never use a plastic bristle brush.

@@Jekaterinna she used Dawn dish soap in the video, but responded to another comment saying castile would be more historically accurate. Some people use baby shampoo.

Hello! I've recently watched your pomatum video and figured your most recent video would be the best place to ask a few questions, if you don't mind. Would it work if I bought a small tub of generic lard with flavor preservatives in it such as citric acid and BHT, or will that affect the mixture, being neither purely lard in general due to the additives, nor purely *pork* lard? I would render my own pork lard but I'm not frequently cooking pork to the extent that I could get my own. Secondly and lastly, is there any large different between plain lard and hydrogenated lard that would effect the mixture?

Heritage-style lard and tallow is easier to find now, especially if you are near any natural food stores. If not, look for it online.

Hi! I currently have a boar bristle brush but the bristles don’t quite penetrate my hair... would you say they are only for specific hair types or does brush quality affect the stiffness of the bristles? The one I own was pretty inexpensive.
@moonbear5929
@moonbear5929 4 жыл бұрын
The bristles might not be long enough if you have thick hair, or maybe the bristles are too densely packed together to get through your hair. I suggest you try to find a boar brush with longer bristles that are not so densely packed. But in the mean time, you may have to brush your hair in layers.

I like to use a toothbrush to wash my brushes it prevents dirt to shift from brush to brush. As unhygienic as it is my toothbrushes have a life cycle: i use wooden toothbrushes because i find the bristles softer and more thorough so i'm able to write the date (and name) on them (so i don't confuse them with my moms) after three months as recommended (and i can refer back to the date i've written because i suck at remembering when i open a product) i store them away in my bathroom and open a new toothbrush, i use the old one to wash my brushes combs and rollers. Once the delay of the new toothbrush is up, the newer goes into brush washing duty, older one goes into any housekeeping needs and the latest goes into my mouth and so on, i just find it wasteful to buy a toothbrush for my hair tools, even though i would have no problem buying a brush specific cleaning tool, i'm a bit moronic like that at time. Note: if anyone is interested in vaguely historical harems, i would suggest trying to distribute sebum/daily non-water cleansing with a comb, i personally use a basic lice comb, that works wonders for me it works similarly to a boar bristle brush but is more historically adequate for most of europe until the late modern period, does a more thorough job imo, is generally cheaper and most importantly can be washed and dried in a matter of minutes in the sink: historical haircare tends to trade frequent hair washing with frequent "tool" washing you grease and dirt will transfer onto your brushes, combs, caps, veils, washing cloths( was a thing advised for in the early 19th century)until your hair is thoroughly coated in grease, then the hair is degreased, either by the use of various powders in the 17th and 18thcentury, soaps in the late 19th-early 20th century or detergents, first alkaline in (probably antiquity research is a pain in that context) the medieval era and early renaissance, then homemade or made locally in the victorian era and finally mass produced from the early 20th century onwards

So the lice comb act like dry shampoo when used daily?
@TheGabygael
@TheGabygael Ай бұрын
@@g.g.79 kinda? It doesn't strip away the grease but spreads it. I have noticed my breakage of my roots since using this method, could be something else I do (I tend to tie my hair rather tightly because my hair is slippery and yet too short to wear it loosely and I did a lot of wet setting earlier this year) but it's not impossible that combs are too stiff for my hair type

I'm not sure about an antique brush, but Belula says to clean their brushes with mild shampoo and a few drops of essential oil. The EO could disinfect depending on which one you use. Dawn dish soap is a mild disinfectant as well.
