Ring up your waterboard, we will come out and clear it free of charge 90% of the time. I was sceptical about this video, advising people to attempt to clear themselves but I have to admit your advice was spot on. I'm a drainage engineer and you would be surprised how many jobs we turn up to and end up removing 20metres of rods that the homeowner had lost whilst trying to clear their blockage. Just make a call to your local water authority, don't make our job harder by worsening the problem.

A great tip for all householders and the tightening of the rods together is just so important, Just one other point I would make is to keep a very good grip on the rods at all times,I once had a 6ft deep manhole that i was clearing and the suction took the rods right out of my hand, Happily, they were just in a good position for me to rescue them when the drain emptied,So yes keep a good grip, Brilliant video once again.

Larger system that are used in America have less chance of blocking narrow british systems block more easily and are also more subject to scale build up blockages. British system do work but not quite as well and it really has nothing to do with saving water and has more to do with saving of materials and ease of building. British streets are also also narrower so smaller systems work better in that situation. London can and does have bigger systems on the mains.

The US wastes more everything than anyone in the developed world ...
@bighands69
@bighands69 5 жыл бұрын
@@MonaHerSelfM The US uses its own resources to build its own country. All that wood, metals, stone and so on comes from the US reserves which it still has plenty of. It does not waste more it uses what it requires to build its systems. US systems also require less maintenance and rebuilding so it uses it materials up front rather than having to patch them up later. The US also has bigger cities so it cannot afford to use British style systems.

A big thank you. I suspected my sewer outlet was blocked for a few days as the toilet was slow to empty and when the bath was draining the toilet started to bubble. Having watched you video, I knew for certain and went off to Wickes and bought a drain rod starter kit for £23. After using your plunger technique, away it all went and now I have a nice clean and clear sewer pipe outside my house. Thanks to your video I have saved myself a lot of money because I was about to call for someone to come and jet my drain for me which would have cost a fortune compared to the minor purchase of the drain rods. Added bonus is I now have the kit in my garage in case I ever have to do it again

Al, watching ur video in 2023 and it worked to the tee. Got couple of drain rods and the 100mm rubber plunger from Reece rather than buying the entire kit. While doing this job, patience is a virtue, because depending on how bad your drain is clogged, it could take a few goes, so keep at it. Drains cleared and saved a big chunk on calling out d plumber. One thing I do especially if you have a long length of pipe to rod, even though you might tighten the joint they can come loose from the plunging and banging and you dont want that , so I get some builders line, tie it to the top of the plunger or skewer fitting and put some electrical insulating tape around it and as i join each rod I put a little tape around the rod and line so at least if it does come apart you can pull the rods back , the orange builders line is cheap and strong , might save a lot of hassle . excellent video

@dereton33 I will be uploading a video entitled "The phantom bog blocker of Sheffield 2" In the next week or so. It's more a (Spike) Milliganesque take on the insanity of people being too scared to criticise persistent vandalism of a toilet in a bingo hall. The offender being a "woman" who takes 4 inches or so of single sheet toilet paper from a dispenser and intentionally floods out the toilets. Also includes the weirdest flush syphon ever invented. With your permission, I'll include a segment form this video in the upload. That OK?

When the blockage goes it usually because it has hit a wider drain, as you say the main sewer in the road. Sometimes it is just the sheer weight of the block pushing away when compressed by using a plunger.

There's a bit of water in the trap, but I can see it flowing through to the main sewer....Not usually a job for a woman, but I am dead proud of myself! The drain you are referring to is a trapped bend, much like a u bend on your sink. It is best to put your hand into the bend to pull out any rubbish, if its clear then the blockage is further down the pipe. Best to look for your nearest drain cover, lift this and see which direction your pipework is headed.run the sink to locate the proper drain run when you see water entering the man hole. If the man hole is full up with water then insert the drain rods in the direction of the street. Al

Al, good advice here, a call out from an emergency drain jetting company can by about £80 or more whereas a set of rods £30 or so for top quality sets. The latter is a one off payment for life. Another trick I have successfully tried on a series of drains is to simply shove a garden hose on full power in from the dry pit towards the full blocked one. This sometimes will abrade the obstruction depending what it is followed by everything working loose.

With rods you have to take hygiene and storage into account. For most people in towns this is not really an option for the odd time they are used. If you live in the country side you can store them properly outdoors.

I can't thank you enough for helping me diagnose this. I'm based in the UK, and i experienced gurlgling sounds from my shower, and when i flushed all the toilets in my house, the water would rise to a high level in the toilet. By doing some research online based upon the above diagnosis, i figured out that it could be either a drain blockage or a vent issue. I looked into the former possibility, opened the drain cover, as you instructed, in the front of my house, and i could clearly see a blockage (water/waste level high in the drain). However, instead of using drain rods myself, i phoned the water company in my area (severn trent) and they unblocked it for me, as i shared my drain pipes with my neighbours, so it wasn't my responsibility to clear, it was the water company's. They used rods to clear the blockage, removed some items which caused it, and now everything works tickety boo! I'm glad i didn't to unblock it myself, because i would have been unable to remove the items which caused it.

Hi ,usually if the inspection cover has water in it then it is blocked , so keep rodding ,although if it is empty it may be blocked further down the line. See if there is another inspection chamber nearer the main road drain, and take a look to see if that one has water in it , if you cannot clear it don't despair a lot of times it is the main junction in the road which comes under your local water authority , and they have to clear it, it happened to me once. Good luck with it, regards, al.

Glad to be talking to someone prepared to listen,often it is all you need,soap powder coagulates and makes a mass,as does the swill down from your kitchen sink,no one hot washes any more and cold feed washing machines do not help matters as I said.Keep it handy in case it happens again,if it keeps on,lift the manhole,find which invert the pipe drains from,and gently back rod toward the gully to clear any blockage.inspect all your manholes,esp this time of year,leaves,etc find their way in.

I've watched my brother do ours a couple of times, he attaches the pressure washer hoseto the rods with plastic ties and blasts water into the pipe running away from the house and it works

Footprints 👣 were an own brand competing with Rabone Chesterman or Eclipse (whom eventually merged), I always remember them as 'gas crocs'. Found a couple of pairs in dads old tool drawer...a quick whizz on the wire brush and hey presto, ready for many years more use. Excellent vlog...just how I do it too 👍

Such a horrible job; but essential and saves ££££ for calling someone out to do it. A rod kit is cheap to buy and alot cheaper than call out fees and labour costs! Do it yourself. Thanks dereton33!

This is a very helpful video for those experiencing 'toilet problems'. The only thing I would add is that it may be more fruitful to locate all the manhole covers first and establish which one is the nearest to the main sewer (furthest from the house) lift that one first - if empty put the lid back temporarily and lift the next one back to the house and so un until you find the one that has 'stuff' in it and that is the one that needs the clearing action. BTW to all those who are advising that he should have worn gloves - it may be shit to you but it is bread and butter o him;-)

baby wipes often cause this, they snag up on a rough area of mortar in the sump and accumulate seeing as they dont dissolve and break up like paper does. One time we had a serious back up so bad that the drain cover had lifted and the "carp" was leaking all over the back yard. Its amazing the amount of suction pressure when the thing breaks!

Great video. Many thanks I had a rod set I'd previously bought for gutters and this sorted the problem. A healthy coating of Vicks in a dust mask helped a little with the smell as the blocked drain in this case was in my garage. Don't think I'll feel clean for a while though 😂

Yes it is not the best of jobs , still think of the money you have saved on a drain clearing company.

The jetting machine is king , but I am trying to help people at home who are in a fix and cannot afford to get a pro draining company in as you rightly say they are expensive. One other thing the mop head must be attached to the handle and unless the mop came off the handle when plunging the pan you would have a job pushing a 6 ft wooden handle around a toilet pan bend. regards, al.

Cling film, apply in layers to a form a tight seal, than from the top, using the plunger in the tank, fill with water till full. once tight and full press firmly with hands spread wide and the pressure should force the clog through.

Make sure your gully grids are in order too,do not plant trees close to the house,keep an eye on those you do have-tree roots go for moisture,and find their way into pipes for this very reason.Keep an old long screwdriver handy or a big tyre lever (i use both) drain rods with plunger to your drain width,red gloves/gauntlets,screw for your rods too,for real blockages.You may never need them from one year to the next,but drain bills can be big ones if you have to pay out personally.

Thanks very much. I found a video which said what you said, and I was literally shocked that it worked. The drain has stopped overflowing as much as it used to because I used a plunger on it a couple of times. Thanks very much for your help. All the very best in all you do.

Super video - we have had trouble with our drainage since last xmas when loads of sewage came up in our garden.. thewater company supposedly sorted it for free using jets etc. A few months later we noticed water coming from the bottom of the extension walls onto the patio whenever we let the bath go, rodding outside drain seemed to work... for a week anyway,now everytime we let bath go/washingup/washing machine it simply empties into the garden overflowing the drain. We have rods and have tried this a few times. Also eggy smell comes into the kitchen when using upstairs bathroom... my dad suggested lifting manhole, which the previous idiots - i mean owners- left under the extension floor.. its all soooo depressing and no money to pay a professional..hoping maybe lifting manhole will work as kitchen wooden floor is lifting.. god knows whats under there! - my babies just about to start crawling as well eeeek!
@dereton33

berrykrushmissk9 That will be the one to rod under the extension, that manhole cover was originally in your garden and would have been the main one to rod out. Regards,Al.

Managed to unclog the pipe. Only for it to clog a few hours later (not a lot went through). Guess I may have to remove the toilet to see from the inside out... oh well, might be a landlord job. Thanks for your advice +dereton33 poles at least worked a treat, although my auger was getting caught and worked better with just the poles with no auger.
