Someone on KZbin said using clear coat will distort the light beam angle and projection trajectory. I don’t know if that is true or not. They said using a clear wrap is a better choice.
@NeilD163
@NeilD163 3 жыл бұрын
@@hashishsenju2015 No its not true, you could put a clear wrap over but the factory coatng will still degrade if left in place, sanding then applying a wrap will still leave you with sanding marks whereas clear coat fills the tiny scratches in to give the lens its clear apperance.
@NitroNuggetTV
@NitroNuggetTV 3 жыл бұрын
@@hashishsenju2015 they were talking out their butt. if clear coat supposedly effects the beam pattern how do they not expect an even thicker less clear and uniform layer of wrap to effect it as well? headlights are clear coated from factory. The only problem you can find with some clear coats is when it expands at different speeds from the plastic headlight lens and causes spider cracks in the clear coat.

I was recommended to clearcoat a set of new headlights before I install them. So is it necessary to still sand the surface down and then spray clearcoat or can it just be sprayed directly on it. I was recommended this because the headlight lenses are known to fade easily.

I did this to my car's headlights in 2011... They are still clear to this day. Mind you, it's a Honda S2000, and I like to keep it clean. 😎 I did this to my friend's Corolla on the same year, and in 2020 we noticed small peeling on the edges. He doesn't keep his car as clean though, so maybe that's a factor. Otherwise, it basically last as long as clearcoat last on a car when done right and taken care of.

This is fantastic and gives me a lot of confidence going into my headlight restoration project. Just a couple questions, I'm going to have my headlights split apart for other reasons, restoring reflector chrome + projector retrofit, is clearcoating the lenses better to do on the car? If I could do it off the car, how should I set up the lenses so that I can be sure to get them coated nicely? I was thinking of masking the inside of the lenses and taking care not to touch inside. I'm also planning to use a "Spraymax" 2k clear in a spray can, I don't have access to a compressor unfortunately. As long as the prep is proper, could I still expect a decent result out of a can as from a gun? Thanks!
@pavmik1
@pavmik1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I would do it off the car but probably after you do everything you need to do on the inside. I would even do it after installing the lens back to the housing. I’m sure you will get great results with the can as long as you take your time with prep. Also I’d recommend putting the headlights facing up so that the clear coat can flow out better. Hopefully everything I said makes sense lol. Let me know how it turns out:)

Dee Dee Clay thanks! I used a cheap 15 gallon compressor at the time. But you’d probably want something bigger than that. I try to stay about 6-8 inches away from the lens. My curiosity (and for preface I haven't used a clear coat like this before) but with all the clear coats I have tried what I notice is that my headlights get hazy for some reason. Is there something I am getting wrong ? Would that be the clear coat I use or could it be in the system I use.
@pavmik1
@pavmik1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, well I’d try this way. But I had to learn the hard way myself. I’ve had clear coat crack up on the lens. And sometimes it would get hazy but that was because it was very humid. Try doing it on a warm dry day. And make sure you sand off all the old clear before you start moving up in grit. What grit would you normally finish sanding with? It would have to be at least 1000 wet sand for good results. But no more than 1500 so it has something to grab on to. Let me know if something I said doesn’t make sense and I’ll try explaining better.

@@pavmik1 that makes sense. Last time I tried to use the 3m kit which goes 500, 800 to I think they go up to a 3000 but I finished off with the rainex clear coat which is a rubbing more than a spray applicant. I find it looks fine for the first 5 minutes but as it dries it gets hazy
@pavmik1
@pavmik1 3 жыл бұрын
@@benblackburn2693 yea lol those 3m kits are a joke. The biggest thing to get the best result is prep work. If you think you sanded all the 320 grit scratches off with 600. Get a brand new 600 grit sandpaper and sand it really good for another 5 minutes. Do the same for all the other grits as well. Because the deeper scratches are the hardest to get rid of but they will show up the best once you lay the clear down. I use a 2:1 ratio high solids euro clear coat. I find that the best option as far as what works on headlight lenses. The only issue with that is. Nobody wants to spend $100 + on a gallon of clear coat that will just sit there after you are done with the lights unless you have something else to use it on.

Hey, thanks for your video mate! I sanded my headlights today and took my time by doing so. I sanded it from p400 to 600 to 1000 I was really thorough while sanding. My plan was to sand it to 1000 and hand it over to a bodyshop so they can coat it with 2k clear for me. I did a test spot with some compound and polish (rotary) to see if I removed the sub p1000 scratches successfully. I noticed that I got some really deep scratches that won't come out anymore no matter how much I sand with p400 or 600 They seem to be much deeper. Im afraid that you'll be able to see the deeper scratches after clearcoat. You think I could try a p320 or p280 to get those deeper scratches out ? Or do I risk of causing even deeper scratches?

I did this to my Honda S2000's headlights in 2011. To this day they are still nice and clear. This car, I keep it clean, but I did this to my friend's car in the same year, and his began to barely start peeling along the edge about 2 years ago. Keep in mind, he drives a Toyota Corolla and I know he doesn't keep it as clean as my car. I would definitely say that the cleaner you keep them, the longer it will last. Even then, if it does start peeling, just do it again and get another 8 years or so.

Do you have any tips to avoid orange peel and what to do manage orange peel?
@pavmik1
@pavmik1 4 жыл бұрын
Neal Singh Hey, to avoid orange peel I’d turn up the pressure to about 27-29 psi so that the clear coat flows out more when it lands on the lens. With more pressure I would also move more faster to avoid runs. Hopefully that makes sense.

Aldo Torres for this one I used the iwata LPH400 with the purple cap. But right now I use the GTi pro lite with the T110 air cap. Both guns are really good. But honestly you can use any gun. Just turn the pressure up higher to about 28-29 psi and move quickly.
