Thank you so much for this info Sarah - it feels like I have been looking for it forever. I just felt intuitively that the standard ways of clearing stones that I know of - salt water, sunlight etc just wouldn't cut it with heirloom jewellery. As a Cancer my birthstone is pearl but I don't really like them except for the black ones. My Taurean mother has amber and opal and other things which I can't imagine wearing when the time comes for them to be passed on. Now, even if I never wear them, at least I can clear them. She does actually have some hematite beads which are kept with the others so they may very well be helping to keep the vibes down. Incidentally for my birthday, I was given a bracelet of malachite bloodstone and hematite and I wear it all the time - it has 14 hematite beads in it. It's a real power piece that has been helping me stay grounded and clear my ancestral patterning.

I have a question for you: years ago, a very sensitive person told me that even metals (gold more than silver, for example) used in making jewelry are significant accumulators of energies and information belonging to the person who wears them. For this reason, he advised me to be cautious when wearing jewelry that gets passed down through generations in the family.
