This video is about How to clear green pond water?
pond green water,
Hopefully this video will explain the following:
clear green pond water,
how to clear green pond water fast,
what causes green water in a pond,
why is the water green in my fish pond,
how do I remove algae from my pond,
is green pond water bad for fish,
how can i make my pond water clear,
green pond water solutions,
how do you keep a pond clean,
next week - is green pond water bad for fish
Problems with this pond was.
1 - Not enough UV Filtration
UV filters are needed in fish ponds with a bare liner, so make sure you have a big enough size filter for your pond!
2 - Wrong place for the pond pump
The whole of the pond needs circulation, so the filter system can be effective.
3 - Dead Areas for sludge to build up
Again you need the whole of the pond to circulate so you should not have any dead areas for the sludge to build up.
What would I change if this was my pond?
i would fill the whole of the pond area with water. So all of the sunken area would be water an eco system pond (instead of a goldfish pool). This eco system pond would have an intake bay and wetland filter keeping the surface clear and a fish cave instead of the covering net!

Richard Reynolds yes if it stops at a level. I would paint (reseal the concrete pond) with a rubberised sealant. Fibreglass is another option, but concrete just around the top part may fix it but for how long it’s a big question. I know a few people that have painted their ponds with PVA and had good success.

rock and gravel are never the whole problem, it’s always about the design, the only problem ponds have with rock and gravel is circulation issues. we build loads of eco system ponds with rock and gravel, these ponds have a lot less work. this pond in the video is more like a fish pool, bareliner ponds traditionally have more plants and rocks in them! don’t blame the pond, blame the designer!

Hello mark great vid in my pond i have not had my uv light on for about 2 years now still not got green water i think it may be down to the amount of plants that i have in the pond i have two big storage boxes of irises /one box of marsh marigold and three boxes of Lilly's it seems to work well so far

Kevin Pawsey that is great. Plants are the best form of filtering water. As you can see in this video it’s avoid of plants. I class this as a pool with a bare liner. My idea way to keep the water clear as you say is building an ecosystem pond rocks, gravel, plants No Chemical filtration like UVs. But this client did not want to change the amount of plants (waterlilys only shade the surface, not removing any nutrients from the water column). Great comment thanks for sharing your experience!!!

@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 6 жыл бұрын
Jay McCormick yes removing the particular waste is far better, we use mess bags to filter the fine waste, we simply attach them to the out let pipe on over vacuums and waste pumps. But I would not recommend leaving them on long term in supervising as they can block up real fast!

Nice video. I got a pond with green water and not to sure of problem. The filter (grey pod at side of pond) is an Evolution Aqua eazypod automatic. In pond pump is 10,000 litres. Pond is roughly 5000 litres. Long but quite shallow. Filter cleans every 7 days sending 80 litres to waste. Uv attatched to Filter. Filter has not been on for about 12 months as wasnt gushing water out and was throwing a lot of waste out. Want to know if the set up should be adequate or not. Cheers for any help
@ThePondAdvisor
@ThePondAdvisor 4 жыл бұрын
If the filter has not been on, now it’s on give it 14 days to clear the water, you might need to clean the system more. You don’t need a UVC on every pond but when we are talking about a bareliner pool/pond then yes the UVC is the only way to keep the water clear without lots of plants. If the set up is to much work or attention look as some off my other videos where I am showcasing eco system ponds no UVC and a lot less work.

How to prevent green water: - Less fish in the pond - Better and bigger filtration (bio-mechanical filter!) - Stronger pump that can be regulated (flow rate) - More frequent cleaning (removal of dead plants for example) - More shadow - More water circulation - Less feeding - Air injection into the water - Hardness of the water being too low (rain water taking over)

Just to be clear, and clear up what it might have looked like. We did carry out a 20% water change to replace the amount of sludge and waste in the pond. But the tap water on this property is very high in phosphates so it’s would have been silly to change more water.
@TheOpelkoenjas
@TheOpelkoenjas 6 жыл бұрын
@The Pond Advisor Thank you, doing the best I can. ;) If the tapwater is very unbalanced, here's what I personally do: 1) Always test the tap water BEFORE doing any big water changes. This is very important and should be done several times beforehand, in a time span of 1 to 2 weeks, since the quality off tap water can change pretty significantly and drastically. How much rain there has been the last couple of weeks, how much tap water people have been using the last couple of weeks, how hot/cold it has been, ... You'll surprised by the outcome, as I have been surprised myself too a few times. :) By doing so you'll have an idea on what to be on the lookout for. 2) If you notice that the quality of the tap water is significantly "out of shape" during those 2 weeks, and you have no cured and filtered rain water available, if possible - even if this means in the garage - keep it in a holding vat big enough to do a 50% to 75% water change. Not 20%. When a pond is as dirty as that one a 20% only works for 2-3 weeks and then the algae start returning with a vengeance. Use 50 to 75% of the volume of the pond. And this about a week in advance. Add chemicals if needed, test it at least once a day and use the old pond filter - rinsed out of course - to stir things around. This way you also inject some of the old beneficial bacteria in the new water too while you're at it. Oh, do not forget about the dreaded chlorine in the tap water. Specially during dry seasons or when a lot of rain has fallen out of our skies, there could be a pretty high concentration of chlorine in the water. In my region (Belgian coast) it sometimes gets so bad that there are days where you can literally smell it in the tap water and causes irritation when taking a shower. It's ridiculous. SMH When the chlorine has evaporated, you'll notice that the water values will start to change too. 3) Dilute the tap water with (cured, filtered and stored under ground) rain water if needed and if possible. I know, people are still worried about the Ph levels and all that, but in all seriousness, and I have noticed this myself: the rainwater quality has changed A LOT over the last 2 decades and especially the Ph levels have almost become neutral. 20 years ago the use of rain water was a big no-no for ponds, it was even advised to not use it for your laundry machine due to its acidity, today 2018 it's almost as good as tap water, if not better in some regions (like mine). Yes, the hardness of rain water - or rather the lack of it - still poses a problem for ponds. Well, not really a problem when you also use a big bog filter like I do, filled with the correct amount of rocks, pebbles or even (natural) bricks that are rich in calcium. That's how I myself raise the hardness naturally: with the use of limestone and alike. Works like a charm when used in the correct way. :) Haven't got an algae problem in years now, and this with even 3 big ass Muscovy ducks using it as their private bathroom. *sigh* Cheers.

Its crazy how the world is changing. After this 20% change we have not had any problems. It’s been weeks now and the pond has only been topped up with tap water, yes the filters get cleaned out every 2nd week but very small amount of water is dumped away to waste. Every pond is different, totally get the water changes in quality thats why we only did a small Water change. Having said that I would never recommend more that 50% water change unless, the pond had to be sterilised. If it’s not broken don’t fix it. The water quality in the pond was fine as the algae was using the nutrients. Now the filters are keeping the pond from going green. In an ideal world I would change the design on this fish pool to more of an eco system pond, were we would only clean the biological bog/wetland once a year. Of course we would have to get the gardener to keep the (mechanical filter) skimmer box clean weekly. But having said all this, ponds are very forgiving. Providing we help and keep that waste out of the body of water

If you planning on doing a full drain and clean like this one, it’s best to remove as much water as possible when start removing the fish. If they are covered in waste add them to a fish wash first before adding them to a bigger holding system. The idea is to remove the waste. You have to act quickly so the fish don’t get stress to much and you have everything you need before you remove to much water.

Green pond water? The breeding ponds for all types of fish in China are all Green/brown so it must not upset the fish . Green water makes the fish hard to see for Herons also hard for you to see but then less losses from predators. So on balance green water has some plus points.

HappyAgony Yes so green chemical filtration was 100% need. It would has stayed green with out the upgraded filters. Filters were always part of the plan on a fish pool. I did give the option of a pond renovation (changing it to a low maintenance eco system pond with chemical filtration) but the client did not want to invest and liked the pool. Both services were needed (in this case). As just putting (upgrading) the filters on would have taken far to long to clear the fish pond. The client is totally hands free and would not want the maintenance (the gardener also did not want the hassle of the work) to cleaning the filters multiple times for weeks. Yes the pond water was green as it was completely out of balance.

Their is always a faster way, a lot of people make mistakes, this process is the safest and fast way to long term solutions of green pond water. I could have tipped in chemicals to kill the algae, with in hours the water would have have looked cleaner. Then with in two week I would have a phone call from an un happy customer. Due to the pond turning green again. This way the pond is still clear. How long has that been. The cheapest way to build a pond is to do it once. This fish pool is a lot of work and a lot of attention, the customer is aware there are better systems that work with Mother Nature. He is happy with his clear fish pool and happy to pay a gardener to clean his filters.
