I've had good luck pulling my climbing line up through obstructions by tying a clove about 10 or 12 inches from the end. That way as it is pulled through branches the end of the climbing rope kind of flops around and doesn't get jammed against a knot or sharp edge.

Is there any chance that the sharp edge of a palm frawn stem could slice into or through your climbing rope??? And if so, how would you go about protecting yourself and your rope from that happening? I’d really love to hear your thoughts about that. I have some palm trees just like this that I need to trim and in the past I’ve paid a guy that used spikes to climb the tree and now there’s tons of spike holes. Kinda bummed about that but that was before I knew any better or anything about tree health. Trying to find a better way to trim the tree going forward.

I had this question asked before to be honest I do not climb very many palms with spiked fronds. So I contacted friend of mine he goes by Meskin Arborist his name is Ricardo from Tree Care La and he explained that he never experienced damage while climbing palms with spikes on the fronds. He was on a Tree Stuff video a webinar Here is the title you might check it out. ( Palm pruning from start to finish webinar with Nick Araya) This is a great video and they do touch on that topic. If you are looking for you palms to be trimmed with more damage to the trunk when contacting a tree service let them know that's what you want. There are also other techniques that can be used. Hey Bino, just an update. I did end up trying the srt system on my dads palm. I couldn’t use my foot/knee ascender on my rope. It was pulling the strands out. I used the zigzag with the chicane. I put a small pulley attached to a prussik cord and tied it above the chicane and fed the tail end of my rope through the pulley. I pulled the tail end until the chicane and pulley touched. The manually advanced the prussik and pulley up as far as I could up the rope then did it all over again. Hope this makes sense Hahahaha. I think they call it a two to one but I’m not sure, just know it worked

I'm an certified climber (buildings, not trees) and have a dead palm I need to cut, 25 feet tall or so, but it's too close to a fence and pool and other trees to just fell it whole, so I plan on chunking it in 4/5 pieces. my problem is that the top fronds are 100% gone, so there's nothing to wrap around securely. I've been thinking about using 2 straps around the trunk to anchor to (1 for a primary for my SRD and and 2nd as a backup to the 1st one, connected by a short lanyard to the SRD)+ a lanyard around the trunk. Do you have another way you would recommend other than using a cherry picker or removing the fence (it's my neighbors fence, but they also have a pool on their side that mirrors my pool, so I have a very small felling window, which is also why I can't really get a cherry picker back there very easily)

When you do your anchor at the base use a half hitch above the anchor so you have two points and not just one. Why did you do a canopy tie? You only made more work for yourself. Like he said, “hopefully bring it down.” I really hope you didn’t prune those palms but we all know you did. You already reduced the life of the tree by trimming it 11-1 not 9-3.
@BinoH4 ай бұрын
On a Queen palm I would just use a hand saw to prune. The reason to do the canopy tie is if you were trimming maybe a Mexican Fan Palm and using a chain saw like I said in the video. No I didn't trim these palms I did remove the seed stalks. This is a friend of mines house who was nice enough to let me film. He had someone trim them before I asked it I could film at his house.
