Can you clip the wings when they are pullets?
@NikkiJames-dv6cw9 ай бұрын
Hi. Really useful video. We’ve 16 hens and two of the younger ones (approx 1 year old) keep flying over the fence to get to the compost heap in another area of the garden! Whilst I’d prefer not to clip their wings we have a big problem with buzzards here in France and I can’t have them being too far away from the cockerel or the protection of the hen house, especially as they don’t seem to be able to get back in! One question though. They have to fly up onto their perches at night which are about 2.5 ft off the base of the hen house. Will they still be able to do this? Many thanks for your response

I do it exactly the same! You haven't said quite clearly only to cut one side.... But love your enthusiasm!

Good to hear you are doing the same 😁 you are right about that 🤔 I hope they get the point when I mention clip 50% on one side and 50% on the other side. 🤷🏻♂️🧑🏻🌾

Are the chicken wings the same as duck wings

Hi Audrey, great question! It's not something I've personally ever done. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWSWp5qki7CbfaM this video might be able to help you out.

Is this safe to do to chicks? We have chicks and their starting to try to fly out of the coop and we don’t want that because we can’t have the chicks outside

I'm not 100% sure. But from what I remember you should not clip the wings in their first year.
@CFarnwide3 жыл бұрын
I would just like to add, only do this if absolutely necessary! Don’t give your chickens a reason to fly over the fence in the first place. Keep plenty of food, water, forage, and especially entertainment (toys, swings, etc.) available and they most likely won’t even think about leaving the yard. However, there can always be that rebellious, adventurous one that may need to be clipped. One of our Easter Eggers just flew over the fence into the neighbors yard. Luckily their dog was inside. She’s getting clipped tomorrow night 😕

You are correct. Only clip wings when they need to be clipped!

Nope sorry you’re wrong. My chickens have everything they could ever want but still want to fly over and live on our patio!

Hey! Only clip them when needed. If they are not causing any issues so far. Just let it be. It's always better to give them as little stress as possible 😁

The outside two feathers should not be clipped. "The bird needs them to hold its wings up. They tuck into the body feathers. If you clip all the outside wing feathers you will see drooping wings dragging on the ground. Never cut those outside feathers.

Wow really? I've never ever had problems with this and I could not find this information online! But thank you for the extra info!

I clip my chicken's wings just like you did in the video, and I only clip the primary flight feathers. I also only clip one wing, to keep my birds from being balanced when they attempt to fly. Once they see they can't steer in the air, they won't attempt to fly. I've never had a problem with drooping wings ever, and I've been clipping primary flight feathers since 1998, and it's now October 7, 2023. I have 36 hens now and 15 guinea fowl, and have never seen drooping wings. I've raised hundreds upon hundreds of chickens on my 287 acres down here in South Alabama.

With the drooping it sounds like there was damage to the physical part of the wing not because the feathers were cut. (Like a damaged nerve or something when the wing was being held)
