It's been 3 days since we caught the river herring aka Alewife fish and we have been cold smoking the fish for 3 days now. They were almost impossible to eat will all the bones that they have but people have been smoking Alewife for years. There must be a good reason for the long cold smoked fish still being eaten. Since we tried them pan fired we thought them in-enable with the amount of bones that they contain. Boy were we in for a surprise when we toasted them after that three days of cold smoking the alewife fish more Commonly known as River Herring.
Last time I went to Canada to do a 7day Wilderness Living Challenge ( The point is to gain or maintain our body wait while eating nothing but wild foods) with the Wooded beardsman . We had a blast living off nothing but wild food for 7 days deep in the back woods of Canada. Now He has come down to join me in my to do it all over agin near my house in the coastal stat of Maine.

Hey Zach you are the man. Youre so much inspiration to me because I love being out in the woods and eating wild foods. I once stayed 4 days in the woods with a buddy and it was a great little challenge and had so much fun. Just wanted to let you know that you're an awesome man of God and just an awesome human being. Hope you see this instead of all the hate comments. Have a great day and god bless

I loved and miss my Subaru. Great vehicles. I love yours, all tricked out. When we dug clams, we rinsed them as well as possible, then left them in a bucket of sea water. They will purge themselves of sand (as long as they are alive and their shells aren't broken) over time. The Alewives looked much better after smoking and cooking. Bet they are more like sardines or herring now. It's easier to eat enough calories if what you're eating tastes good and you have plenty. I hope you get a turkey or two tomorrow (today, as we are watching this).

prep the fish for smoking, then soak over night in seawater. The salt in the seawater will brine the fish so smoke can penetrate. The salt will also help preserve the meat.

Alewife will be a great dish if you know how to cook it. Basically a 6 to 8 hours of cooking in a caramel sauce until the sauce is thickened. The bone will melt in your mouth. You can spread it over your bread or eat with rice or just eat by itself.

Pleased to see you improve the shelter with a better fire system. We ate cattail stems 'back in the day' when we had lowland marsh across the road from our farmhouse. Watching ALONE, I wonder why participants are so often seen as relying on one food source or talking up protein and going to bed hungry when they could also be foraging or brewing up spruce tea and the like. Some Season Six participants ARE harvesting a lot of blueberries.

Old timers say drying the fish just a bit for a dried touch before smoking locks in the oils to make the fish richer flavored and better texture. Think you hit that just right because you weren't aggressive at the start.

Slice the fish down the middle from back to belly. Straight down through the head and spine. Turn them inside out and make multiple angle cuts from the inside towards the skin (but not through the skin) Next from head to tail down the lateral line inside to the skin but not through. Poke a hole with your stick through the eye and hang. Diamond chunks of goodness comes right off when done.

I am going to subscribe to your channel just to get the New England fix that I need. I grew up in Presque Isle / Fort Fairfield ME, then moved to New Brunswick Canada for a couple years then back again to the states. We sold our home in Wiscasset ME, 2 years ago, to come to Florida as well as many other states for work. So when I watch your videos it makes me happy just to see the beautiful country side " the best New England has to offer". The drone shots are stunning! Oh by the way...when you went to Gardner to dip thoes alewives it looked exactly like the place where my father in law and i went to set up the fyke net for the elvers as well the presumpscot river and many other locations. I beter stop talking before I crash KZbin. Take care and keep the videos coming.

IF the cat tail tastes like celery, I wonder how well it would do in your ever stew? I know that I mince up celery and it is good in just about everything. I bet that ever stew helps out with a cold. Open up your sinuses and gets those nutrients into your system. Nice smoke ring on the fish.

Again...new...but I noticed in the first video you mentioned doing woodwork in certain boats...etc. So you have some carpentry background. Ever Consider building your own Cabin? I mean...you are in the samish...kind of area (environmentally) as I am. Lots of trees big rocks, mud...I wonder what it would take to make your own cabin out of the materials around you like our ancestors. And I'm not talking about a temporary shelter but a full-scale camp/home, fixins and all! (sorry...a bit of a dreamer here)
