Love your vids Robbie, please keep them coming! By the way, to my surprise, my cyclamen coums came back this year! I also found some babies. I rescued them from my old hanging baskets from last winter and transferred them to my brand new thornless berry planter. I have a new blackberry, tayberry, loganberry, a blackcurrant and a second season jumbo strawberry! The coums are dotted between to brighten up the bare twigs! I'm also going to purchase some of those tiny woodland cyclamen you suggested last year :)

Wispafish the coums will come back year after year for many decades if happy, they self seed as you have discovered producing many offspring. When they die back in the summer they like to be relatively dry so under plants that like a lot of water during the summer can cause corm rot. They can be lifted every year to fill baskets and tubs and just planted back out in the ground for the summer. After a few years of watching individual plants grow they almost become like loving pets that just turn up for winter, believe me, my 4 year old plants I have real trouble parting with! Aren't you supposed to cut the outer shell of the seed first from the Hibiscus Pod? I heard they gernimate better if done properly, due to it's hard outer layer to protect it from moisture. It's natures way of stopping the plant from germinating too early in the year.

StephMmm I think I got 4 plants from that sowing, they can be quite unpredictable so always sow lots of seeds. In zone 6 I’d wait until spring to get them going, but if you have a few seeds maybe try some now and some in spring, always good to have a bit of an experiment. It’s the best way to learn what works best. I hope this helps Robbie 🌻

Hi! I was wondering, my mom brought a hibiscus leaf that she wants to propagate but didn't know she needed a branch cutting is there a possibility we might get a plant? We kept it in water for 2 weeks and it seemed to start getting either roots or new leaves so I just put it in some airy soil and watered well, would love to get some tips if you have them :)

I’ve planted the seeds and the seedlings have come up, but I don’t know how to take care of the little seedlings. Can they grow in direct sunlight? Grow in shade? The leaves seem to start turning in when I put them in the sun, which confuses me because I thought they were heat/sun loving plants. I’m in a humid subtropical climate where it doesn’t snow and stays warm most of the year.

Hi AquaSeahorse Love, the best thing to do is ‘listen’ to the plants, by this I mean do what you are doing by seeing how they react to different environments. With seedlings direct sunlight can be a bit much, try a few hours of direct sunlight in either the morning or evening when it’s at it coolest with the rest of the day in a bright spot but away from strong direct rays. Sometimes too much light can cause seedlings to become leggy, sometimes too little light can make them leggy, it’s never straight forward! The main thing is that you are keeping a close eye on them and reacting to their needs, this is the most important thing and also the best way to learn I have found (you really get to see firsthand what they like and don’t like). Most plants grow in the shade of their mothers or other plants in nature, so partial shade for babies is good. I hope this is of some help and the best of luck Robbie 🌻

This makes a lot of sense, since they seem to love shade as seedlings and crave sun as they mature. My roselle seedling loves sun, which is a plant without a thick foliage. My cranberry hibiscus seedlings love shade, which has a thicker foliage. 👍🏼

For me the seedpod falls off before it can dry n mature. How do i keep it from falling off??

Hi Meena Say, I haven’t had that problem myself before so I’m at a bit of a loss. One thing it could be is damping off where due to wet conditions a fungal infection had taken hold. As the point where the pods break off have a look to see if it is a bit withered. Try treating with a natural anti fungal spray and see if that makes a difference. Sorry not to be more help but it’s a new problem for me. All the best Robbie

Hi Robbi mine is the hardy hibiscus.. I took a few flowers in November when they were completely dry . I'm in Montreal and it was very cold when I removed them. Now I have them in bowl and some of the seed came out of the pod . I hope it's ok but I would like to know what to do now so I keep the seeds good .. also when is the right time to plant them. It sub zero temps outdoors and 22 in the house. Thank you🌻Shahira

Hi Shahira, hibiscus seeds need a bit of cold over winter to germinate well. If you plant your seeds now and leave them in a place where they will freeze in the pot then once the spring comes along they should have a better chance of success. Which variety was this please? Also are they hardy? I bought a plant recently from B&Q its says hardy 12° upwards. Does this mean it's best grown indoors? (West Midlands area uk)

Hi s jay, there are quite a few different hibiscus plants, it’s a big family ranging from tropical plants to outdoor shrubs. The one is this vid is the hardy outside type. If your plant’s label says hardy 12 degrees it might be a tropical house plant type. Have a google of its name on the label as, like I said, it’s a big, big family of plants 🌻🌺🐞I hope this is of some help Robbie 🌻

How often do u water the seeds if you are keeping in a unheated green house over the winter?

Hi Amanda, only water once the surface starts do dry out, you want to keep them moist but not too wet. How long it takes for this to happen could be a week or a few days depending upon how humid the environment etc. Just keep an eye on them and don’t worry too much if they dry out a little, it’s better to keep them on the edge of drying out rather than have them soaking wet. Hi Frances Washington, there are tropical hibiscus and the hardy varieties. The tropical ones don’t like it too cold but the hardy bush ones can live in zone 7 no problem and they are perennial forming small bush/tree structures after few years, I hope this helps Robbie 🌻
