I just collected some Marigold seeds this week for the first time ever. I should have been doing it all these years - I hadn’t really known how easy it really was to collect them….

That is so wonderful! I love that Marigold seeds are so large and easy to collect. Will you try collecting the seeds from other flowers as well? It's so much fun to do!

Heck those things grow so fast and cuttings root so easy that I’d never collect the seeds, lmao! But I do love them! I stink at pruning them to look normal and usually end up looking like an alien. 😂

I have collected seeds before, dahlias, marigolds, and now I plan to collect impatien seeds this coming fall. Like you, I have lots of shade and I love the colours of the impatiens. What I don't like are the rising prices for seeds from suppliers, ie: what use to be 3.50 for 50 Imara seeds is now 3.50 for 8 seeds. Last fall just before a killer frost, I collected cuttings from Solarscape New Guinea impatiens which is an interspecific hybrid impatien, placed them in water on a south east facing window and to my surprise they rooted, AND they grew in pots AND with no grow lights! Thank you for posting this video... I was looking for impatiens seeds in their flowers, lol, now I know better. Zone 5B.

I agree with you that the price of seeds (and even plants) is rising. I love collecting the seeds from my own flowers and vegetables. I rooted New Guinea Impatiens cuttings a number of years ago but I'll have to try it again this year. I love that plant! Definitely be on the lookout for those Impatiens seeds. Collect them carefully in your fist before they pop and go all over the place. Lol. 🌺😊

Thank you for sharing. I planted an entire PKG of impatiens seeds last winter. Only one germinated. So I found a deal in early July. $1 per three pack for some leggy pink impatiens. I cut off the leggy stalks and replanted them. Now I have tons of bright pink impatiens along with the one I started from seed. Which turned out to be the same color. Thanks to you, I can gather seeds for next year. I live in Wisconsin, zone 5b. When do you start your impatiens seeds?
@budgetgardeningvita3 ай бұрын
Hi Carole! I'm so glad that you were able to get a nice display of Impatiens in your garden this year. You usually want to start your Impatiens seeds 8-10 weeks before your average last frost date. Please check out a video that I made showing how to start your Impatiens seeds: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYHNomejf7F2htk. Happy gardening, friend! 😊🌺

I'm on my way outside after this comment to check to see if I have any seed pods on my Impatiens. Thank you for showing me how to harvest them! They will be my only annuals if I'm successful. I live in Oklahoma zone 7b. What zone are you in?
@budgetgardeningvita Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary. Thank you for your comment. Please let me know if you find ay Impatiens seed pods. If you don't, try looking again after 1 week. Will you be sprinkling your perennial seeds on the ground, sowing them indoors, sowing them using the winter sowing method, or something else? I live in New Hampshire zone 5b. ♥🌻

do u winterize them i love them and planning to expérience it for this fall
@budgetgardeningvita25 күн бұрын
Hi there! No, I do not winterize my Beacon Impatiens. They are an annual where I live but I do collect the seeds and grow the plants from seed very easily indoors under my LED shop lights. It is possible though to winterize the plants. I'd recommend taking cuttings from an existing plant (removing flowers and bottom leaves), putting the cuttings in water (changing out the water every few days), letting them root, and then putting them in fresh / clean potting soil. Then keep those plants in a sunny and warm location in your house. Good luck, friend! 😊🌸

Odd question, how did the seed pod end up curled like that? Was that after drying out for a bit or ??
@budgetgardeningvita3 ай бұрын
When the seed pod gets too big, it bursts open / pops and the pod ends up curling up like that. ☺️🌸
@vincentpandarum18543 ай бұрын
@@budgetgardeningvitaThe seed pod reminds me of Balsam seed pods. They burst open and curl up just like in this video. I'm going to look for these seed pods in my impatiens plants now.

@@budgetgardeningvitaMine must not be going to seed, bummer. I rarely ever prune them so that’s confusing to me. Anyways, another question… on my impatiens - the buds are forming on the bottom of the leaves. Is that normal? I’ve never had them before but doesn’t seem to make sense. OR could it be that they maybe need more light?
@jamee_mareeАй бұрын
@@vincentpandarum1854 I have a comment underneath this in replies. Does my plant sound like Balsam to you, maybe??? Asking bc either mine arent ever going to seed or I’m just not finding them. Help!!

Hi there. Are you sure you don't have Sunpatiens or New Guinea Impatiens? The reason I ask is that they look very similar but are different plants that either don't produce seed or don't easily produce seed.

Great video! Will the the pods with white seeds eventually turn brown if left alone?
@budgetgardeningvita Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jeff! I would venture to guess no. As a general rule, it's best to let seeds fully ripen in their pods before harvesting. 😊🌻
@jeffladd1146 Жыл бұрын
@@budgetgardeningvita yes, that was what I meant. Will all white seeds ripen if the pod is left alone?
@budgetgardeningvita Жыл бұрын
@@jeffladd1146 Sorry. Yes, they will eventually ripen on the pod if left alone. Also, many times, you can see from the outside of the pod that the seeds inside are turning a brown color. I hope that helps. 🙂It's so much fun collecting flower seeds this time of year!

I guess this explains why I can’t find any seed pods on the impatiens I bought from a nursery this year, they’re probably sterile
@budgetgardeningvita Жыл бұрын
I planted my Impatiens a bit late this year so they are just barely starting to produce seedpods for me. It could be that your plants are sterile or that they are late in producing seedpods. I suggest that you checking just in case. ☺

How to tell if the pods are ready to get seeds from? I have balsamic impatiens and they have many pods but I'm getting very few brown seeds. Should I wait a few more days?
@budgetgardeningvita Жыл бұрын
Hi Dianna. I have grown Balsam Impatiens and collected seeds from them in the past. You should be able to see the brown seeds through the seedpod's skin. Also, when you barely squeeze on the seedpod, the seeds should release very quickly without much force. I think you are correct in that you should just give it more time. ♥🌺
@diannaordianepeck2022 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for replying. The pods are not yellow like regular impatiens pods, they are medium green and fuzzy. Some are very large but when I opened several, there were several white/light or tan seeds and a few brown ones. Do you know if the they will mature if put under a light? Sorry, first time planting this variety of impatiens, which I started from seeds I bought. Beautiful flowers
@budgetgardeningvita Жыл бұрын
I would wait a bit longer, when the pods are more of a pale green color. I doubt they will mature if collected when white or tan color. You really want to collect them when they are a dark brown color. How many plants do you have? They really are beautiful flowers.
@diannaordianepeck2022 Жыл бұрын
@@budgetgardeningvita I planted many seeds and ended up with about 15 plants. They are beautiful and several grew to about 2 & 1/3 feet tall. They are finicky, need warmth but in a semi shaded way, to mature. Full sun wilts them fast. Pretty bug resistant to. Right now I have about 8 plants left two still flowering with many pods.
