Hey everyone and welcome back to my channel! If you're interested in all things graphic designs illustrations using Adobe Illustrator then you have come to the right place!
In this video I will show you how to colour in illustrator using highlights and shadows. This in depth step by step tutorial is perfect for a beginner designer using adobe illustrator cc 2020. I will teach you how to draw in flat design style!
I'll show you how I use light source direction to determine where our light will come from. I'll be using tools such as the Shape Builder, Colour Swatches and more!

Please don’t be afraid to do more detailed tutorials such as this. Not necessarily “basics”, but even the best illustrator has that thing they seem to struggle with. Personally I prefer using gradient fills, but your technique is definitely better for more of a cell shaded design. It's too bad you can't make a gradient immediately change from one colour to another like you can in something like Blender. You can get close though.

The shape builder thing tool is not working for me... I'm able to delete the protruding segment of the circle... But when I come to the center and try to delete it, the original yellow get's deleted as well... And my third circle disappears

When I select both circles at 6:58 and then Shape Builder, it also makes it my little highlight part of the shape you can delete. When I watch your video I see that your little highlight does not get the red around it as another part of the shape you can delete. I've gone back and tried to redo this in case I missed something but cannot figure it out. Why is your little highlight not getting the red path around it and mine is?

Hi Dom - great video - very easy to follow. I had one question though ; why do you need to add two new copies in front of the original purple ball when you only edit one of them? Apologies if i have misunderstood something here!

So basically I do 3 copies of the purple base colour. The top 2 layers will be selected when using the shape builder. The reason why we have a 3rd layer at the bottom is to make sure the original layer stays untouched. :)

“Option” is what Mac users call the ALT key on your PC keyboard.

You should try explaining why you do such things. For example, "make into an object and outline stroke", many of us do not why that is. Another example, "copy and paste, and bring to the back", why? Many more but won't list it.

Hi, i got that too, i was searching for the solution and found it! The solution is that you probably don't use the "stroke" panel. you can add this by going to window > stroke. if you get a very small panel, you can click on two small arrows on that panel until it becomes the biggest size. then you have to set Cap to Round cap(2nd one). hope this helps!

There isn't an exact tool for shadows. You would need to draw the shadows as shapes and play with the colour tones :)
